We will be passing through the village of Innesmoth, where we will have a short rest and possibly look at the surrounding aquatic life. Then, we walk three days without a town rest, using our tents, then we reach another town by the name of Dunwhat
*alarm bells*

Please everyone! I am sure that you can add more scholars! I have gotten my terrible characters all over this pristine story and only you can dilute them! Dilute! Dilute! Dilute!
DON'T DRINK SOAP! KEEP OUT OF EYE! DILUTE! DILUTE! OK!

Hell, I can get with some vengeance, sure. What do you plan on doing? I suspect our interests overlap.
To be fair, I haven't an idea quite yet. The thing is, something evil wanted my help to get to this place. We had to cross-reference our respective works, you see, this was before I realized this man was inhuman. At any rate, he means to take something in the depths of this temple. So if I cannot kill that being, I will damn well take what it wants. And maybe write a novel about my victory.
I... Alright. That's a revenge, alright. I'm here to save people that were captured, to gather allies in my own country. Or world. I'm getting the distinct impression this is not my world.
Haven't seen  much spiderpeople here, to be fair. If you didn't talk, i'd have assumed you as part of the devil's creatures. Now, time's a wasting. We'll head deeper together, shall we?
Edwin moves to the statue you are standing, and clinks on a bronze amulet over one of the statue's hands. Just as you're about to ask what's up with that, the temple begins to rumble and shake. Then, it stops, all at once.
Hm. Didn't think that would work. These things are a lot easier than they seem... Now, I expect more monsters, so allow me to, ahem, boost my weapon.

To your shock, the man pulls out the Tome Of Eternal Darkness! Even stranger, the one he's holding looks a hell of lot more "real" than the one you're holding. Like it's more complete, in some imperceptible but somehow noticable way. A deep, booming voice begins to sound through the room, a voice that you even recognize! Runes appear around Edwin, who seems a tad uneasy about the whole process.
Antorbok, Magormor, Chattur'Gha, Pargon, Pargon
His shotgun begins glowing with a powerful-looking red energy. Lending power from Chattur'gha?
Chattur'gha can grant you that kind of power?
You know of him? Terrible beast, from what I gather, but the main enemy of the creature's here. The one good thing we have is that the ancients are bitter enemies of one another. I suppose they're too greedy in their conquest of Earth to share. Now, let's move. And stay out of the way of my shots.
I've done my fair share of demon-slaying. I'll go first and see what I can do.
You unsheathe your Ram Dao, which causes an odd look from Edwin. Followed by a smirk.
Hah! That will split them in two! Well enough, I'll let you handle any kind of zombie. I'll save my shells for any Horror or Gatekeeper that appears.
Good call. Let's move.
You make an assumption, and elect to go into the passageway that Edwin didn't just come out of. It deposits you in a long hallway with a few dessicated bodies. They look like mummies without the wrappings, being little more than skin and bone.
Careful! The floor carries many traps. They're useful for killing those monsters, but the same counts for us. The traps reset upon hitting a target, at least. Take care of where you step.
You don't even answer back, and just proceed to crawl along the wall. The weight of the Ram Dao makes you sway a little more than usual, but it's nothing you haven't done before. Lindsey just steps around the different traps very carefully, while you get to disregard the entire thing. Of course, it's kind of distressing to walk along the grooves where blades would come out, without a doubt, but as long as nobody steps on anything, it should be fine. Halfway through the corridor, there's a small indentation along the wall. Lindsey stops moving to start dusting sometihng off using a small and delicate brush. You'd be find with it if it wasn't for the fact that, with a shuddering groan, the bodies on the floor begin to rise up. These things look weak, but you're not sure how hard they hit. you climb off the wall and get into a fighting position. The zombie VERY slowly comes closer, staring you down with its sunken, shrivelled up eyes. You feel a small greenish tinge creep into your vision as it comes closer. Then, you swing your massive blade into the zombie's torso.

As it turns out, Lindsey was very correct. You CAN just split them in two with a simple swing. The torso nearly explodes entirely, and the somewhat sad stump with legs falls to the ground. Impressively, it still manages to move and flail around despite the catastrophic damage. You destroy the other undead corpse walking closer, Lindsey's glowing shotgun lighting the way for you to fight. He gets up again without a care in world, having uncovered a strange tablet.
A rune. I can use this to use more Magick. The book allows me to use it, though I wish it didn't. I'll be disposing of it as soon as I'm out of this temple.
You seem rather unbothered by the zombies.
Those ones are hardly dangerous. I had full trust you would take them down before they even finished shambling over... Though I really advise finishing those things off. It's offputting.
You look at the stumps with legs still writing, though the oldest corpse suddenly stopped moving and disappeared into smoke and yellow light! The other one is still going, and with no better idea, you just stab it in the pelvis area. The creature instantly stops moving, and you feel a little better about that. It also disappears after that.
Huh. I can make these things myself, if I so desired... Well, I'd need a corpse, but that's beside the point.
What are you talking about?
I can do magic where I'm from.
Like it's a normal thing, I'm assuming?
Yep. A lot more magic there. More mana, as well. Especially with Mantorok's plague wreaking havoc.
A plague?
Humans turning into monsters. Corroding their mind to basically animals. I'm immune, as I'm a drider, but it's quite terrible otherwise.
Oh my. Mantorok seems less benevolent than I first assumed. Though I suspect our worlds may not intersect completely. Memories from the previous tome-holders tell me that it seeks to save our world from Xel'lotath, and the other ancients. Chiefly Xel'lotath, though.
Which are the other ones? Chattur'gha and...
Ulyaoth.
The nerd squid!?
...It's a lot more dangerous than THAT, Aestinus. Things are clearly quite different for you. Regardless, if the prisoners are here... Your version of Mantorok may be using another version as a pansy. Hm. We'll see, I suppose. These creatures are hard to understand.

When you enter the room, things instantly take a bit of a turn. A strange creature guards the room, a hulking beast with three massive eyes that seem to stare through your soul. Their lids are festooned with tiny, hook-like teeth. Their stare causes you to feel an unnatural amount of dread, and despite your experience, you only barely resist screaming in fear. You shake it off soon enough, but you don't feel that good...

Let Edwin deal with the Horror.
He was going to deal with these things, let him!

Attack!
Screw this thing for trying to spook you!

Stand back and keep the blade ready. Hit it if it manages to get close.

Don't want to get in the way of that shotgun, remember.

Oh yeah, and if a good opportunity presents itself, leech the thing. Don't take any risks for it, but this would be a good meatshield.

Damn it! Edwin!
You move to the side, letting Edwin get a clear shot at the hulking mass of muscle and madness. He wastes no time and blasts the creature right in its left arm. A red glow surrounds the creature, and it roars in apparent pain as the massive chunk of flesh and claw just explodes outright. He pumps his shotgun (not an automatic, then?) and fires another shot into the creature's eyes. The chunk of flesh holding one of the eyes pops off entirely. Suddenly, even though the creature is still reeling from the powerful blasts, a blast of green "electricity" flies forward towards the two of you! Edwin, without missing a beat, runs TOWARDS the electricity, an makes a small hop before it stops and expands into a shockwave. You're quick on the draw to get the point, and also make a small hop (well, kind of a wobble. You're not really a jumper, remember?) and avoid the shockwave as well. Edwin is right in the face of the lumbering monster now (well, the eyes), but he just blasts the creature away with a shot to the torso. The creature screams (without a mouth? How is it...) and falls forward. Edwin, strangely, doesn't seem bothered in the slightest.
That's the third of those creatures I killed. They're predictable, if nothing else... But don't get hit. I've seen them rip a zombie apart in a single errand swipe.
It's still moving...
Fix that, would you please? It's mostly harmless in that state, and I find it rather therapeutic to remove those things myself. There is an unnatural dread to those creatures, they tear at the mind as they stare at you. Maximillian's notes said as much...
...I read one of his notes, actually. Interesting.
Died in an asylum. Quite sad. He went mad over his fear of Bonethieves. With good reason, I fear, I shudder to think of how deep those things must be entrenched in society.
You end the conversation with silence as you let the weight of your blade do all the work on taking down the Horror. Your blade pierces it like a hot knife through butter, and it instantly evaporates with a yellow glow. You also feel a near-instant relief, though you feel like you're not completely rid of the unnatural strain you suffered.

Ah, look at that! A bowl and a button.
...Yes?
The mechanisms of this temple are very intricate and precise. Minute amounts of weight differences open up new pathways... I found a rusted old armlet. Though, it seems more like random dust and other bits and pieces of filth began encrusting it over a period of... say... If I remember my geology texts well enough, about 800 years. The thing is, the minor weight difference is going to be a problem. With luck, this is where replacements are available, although...
As you both come closer, your nose instantly begins to show its displeasure. It smells horrifically sour, and the inside of the bowl looks conspicuously clean. You look at eachother uncertainly, and with nothing but a nod, you just push the button. There is some grinding of stone, but after a quick click, a foulsmelling but visually clear liquid spills into the bowl.
Acid... Foul enough to melt bone, I bet.
Yeah... I'm not testing it.
This place is a dead end, otherwise, so... Well.
The acid leaks away as quickly as it poured it, as a drain opens in the centre of the stonework.
After some quick digging in his tome (??!) he pulls out a filthy-looking armlet.
Did you just pull that out of your book?
Yes. It holds nearly everything I need... somehow. It's rather efficient. I can even put the tome inside itself to make it easier to carry.
You blink, tilting your head a bit in confusion. You blink again.
Edwin just shrugs. I try not to think about it too hard. It works, is what I'm saying.
A sudden click, and you see acid engulf the armlet. You hadn't even noticed he was still working as you spoke. There is some fairly violent hissing, but after only a few seconds, the acid retreats again  and leaves behind a perfectly pristine armlet. It's made of gold...
Ah, a good hunch. Thank God. To be honest, I wasn't sure that would work... Now, there was another statue with some gold dust on its arm in the other passageway. Although, there is one problem.
More horrors?
Nothing so simple, I fear. No, I tripped a trap that unleased some toxic gas. It's effects are fairly slow, but I don't dare stay there for long. One of us will have to sacrifice their wellbeing to clink on the armlet.
You just sigh at the prospect.
Shall we draw straws?

Would a reanimated chopped-off arm work to crawl over and put the armlet on the statue?

Also, it's been working well so far, but all these finely balanced and delicate mechanisms might mean we're taking the wrong route.  It might be easier to go through the maintenance spaces instead of the main passageways.  We should ask if we could just go through the walls.. because this place seems calibrated for less physical strength then we have.

In addition it seems like he may know a little too much about this place.

I am on page 69 out of 178 now and every time I see something I comment on I realise I should post because if I wait until I've read it all it would be way too long! :)

You slump a bit. You feel like you just swallowed a stone with how your chest feels. You feel absolutely horrible just saying it out loud. Your eyes are burning, and you can just barely resist crying.
The last month has been so, so bad. Now that you had the time to just sit down all the pain has reached you all at once. You're glad you have your own room, because you actually spend a lot of nights just hugging your pillow and staring at a wall. Or crying. Or both. You've learned to fear quiet moments, in a way.
Awwwwwhhhhh...

Who knows how the northern people act when they're not being noble dudes in the pursuit of removing eldrich.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3L3EIITbmOc

She was also able to point the exact way to the queen through the spiderling burrows. She knows the smell by heart, apparently it's a clear sign that she's in breeding season.
The smell made you feel kind of feverish, but not to the point of being a problem.
"And that's when I first realised I have an ovipositor... Inside." :D
He gave you some rejected patches that have no use for anything but activating your biological trigger for some poison. Even if the poison is largely ineffective, it still has value as a cooking ingredient. Plenty of protein in there, apparently...
I'm dyinggggg lol :D

Driders are highly effective as Plugs, but the ports in their bodies need to be spread out much further. So instead of a bean, Sydney gets to play in a ball.
The ports are much better than the old ones, but the damage is still done. They needed to give her artificial ligaments and the like to make sure she could even move around properly after the removal, and she had to kick a painkiller addiction in her time at the orphanage.

She cringes as the machine links up with her and a familiar interface appears again. As she expected, only three streams of information, and one of them is just "acceptable margin for error" on the auto-aim. That one barely requires thinking. As the roof opens, the first few pods begin to enter the great nothingness of space. Many are still getting used to it. Some of the pods are already performing puke prevention. The first time can be rough for some.
For Sydney?
For the first time in five years, as the pod rises up into space and freedom,
Her eyes lit up, and a smile crept on her face.

Trying some different that may be part of another game someday.
I love this, reminds me sort of The Ship Who Sang series which was deep and touching, by Anne McCaffrey and I'm not really a fan of dragons or most fantasy stuff her writing is really amazing and she'll be missed as much as Terry Pratchett, awwh.

It's hardly been explained because nobody in the story cared overmuch, and I wanted to see how long it took for people to notice.
I noticed it! I notice everything, I can't stop noticing
I really love subtle little call backs like that which you can only notice much later maybe we're compelled to leave hints to give them a chance, the bit about how the shield could bring life to an area in the Bad End Alternate Universe was cutely sad awwh.

Stay a while and listen...
... Seriously? Why!? Were we not already cursed enough!?! Ergh... +1!

We got a gas mask, don't we? did we lost it or it was just not added?
You didn't, actually. Your human party members did, but only members of the sentient alliance (which does not include driders) were given a complimentary gas mask upon leaving the dwarven cities.

I could try to resurrect the arm of that big thing. See if that works.
...putting that particular bit of impossibility aside, what arm? The creature disappears entirely upon death, remember? If they didn't, the ancients wouldn't have gotten so far with their machinations.
And yet, there were autopsies?
Well, Maximillian Roivas had a sword and medical knowledge. He could be working from memory. Or the book aided him, that's also possible. But, back to the matter at hand, if you please?
Right, right. Well... There's other things to try. For instance: if everything made to work so specifically, something must be taking care of this place, yes?
I don't think so. The place is robust, but not perfect. Only entryways appear to be working, likely made more robust to avoid people getting stuck.
It measures things in tiny weights. I mean, really, really tiny weights. I don't think they can make it MORE robust.
Edwin uddenly launches into a rant, speeding up as he speaks. I admit the weight was only a theory. What I DO know, is that I need a specific type of amulet on the right part of the statue, from experience. I don't actually know how it works until I've done a thorough exploration with a science team that isn't led by a horrifying evil beyond mankind's knowledge!
There is a short pause while you look at eachother. Then Edwin sighs.
Apologies. I'm a tad stressed.
It's cool, I've been there.
Now... Back to the problem?
Look, I'm probably quite a bit stronger than what they expected. I can probably break down a wall, if needed.
I doubt you can break through several inches of brick. Although... If it's a retractable wall, it's likely thinner, less weight that way. It's worth a shot, if we can find where it will open.
Not easy to see?
They tend to be hidden. Usually I'd look for a lack of dust, somewhere. But, then again, this temple hasn't been touched for millennia. Augustine did not seem to care overmuch for walls, he just disappeared after trying to kill me with that creature he summoned. It didn't stand up to my kukri, after some precision work... Reminds me, if you see a creature with wings, only attack it when its wings are open. Anything else just bounces off.
I'll keep that in mind.

Sadly, neither of you know of any place that seems obviously openable. So, somebody still has to try out the poison hallway...
I guess we should just draw those straws.
I don't actually have straws. Let's have a coin flip, shall we?
You shrug, and decide what side of the coin you want. You elect to go for heads, and Edwin just takes tails with no fuss. He flips the coin into the air, catches it, and places it on his palm. He sighs when he sees what side landed.
Heads... Of course it is. Right then. The gas isn't too fast-working, so I'll try to be in and out in a hurry... I knew I should have brought that scarf.
He takes out a handkerchief and pushes it up against his nose. One deep breath, and he goes in without much issue. Strong-willed, if nothing else. You stand there for a moment, hearing the shifting of stone before a sudden rumbling behind you occurs. To your surprise, the floor is actually collapsing inwards, revealing stairs. Edwin comes out of the corridor just a little later, skidding to a stop and coughing heavily.
Damn it... I need a moment. My lungs are burning...
There is an odd green smoke coming from those stairs... It doesn't spread or anything, but something about it makes you uneasy.

What next? Edwin looks like he could use a break before heading deeper in.

Ask if he need something, a pat on the back or something else for the cough

open our cookbook and see if it detects something

use soulsight, on the stair, and on our friend, so we can assure it's a human

Take a break, but talk about the more positive things on our world.  Engage in some lighter, more positive conversation.  Surely Edwin has something he does when not shotgunning dread creatures.

Also, does the smoke resemble the stuff created by our magic, just.. green?
