If you have access to water you can irrigate. If you have access to a trade depot you can trade. It's not quite as bad as it looks.

Except entire map is covered in lava so no caravans, and there was no aquifer. Somehow, caverns never occur to me as a place I want to go.

I love the caverns! they are so cozey.

I lost an average of three dwarfs a season, not to mention all the deaths from other creatures and even siegers that managed to catch the dwarfs as they ran away from zombie crows.
