I see dwarven weapons being very simple and utilitarian constructions, due to the fact that they're all metal and don't require prior knowledge to make, (but do require experience to make well), so they're something like this in my mind:

*Starts drawing*
Wait a second - I can do better than paint.
*Starts SolidWorks*

*A good hour later*

Here we go:

Your dorven axe looks like one of the short hairy fellows decided "That guillotine would probably hurt if i swung it!"

I've always imagined each race having different looks to their weapons.
Dwarves have the ridiculous bloody "Block on Stick" kind of Warhammers, Gigantic axes, and ludicrously over sized swords.
Humans have more mundane, realistic weapons.
Elves are pansies and all their weapons are curly and engraved with flowers and shit.
Goblins just have really blunt, primitive weapons, like sharp pieces of copper passing off as swords...

This is a side-effect of dwarven animal training (hit animal with hammer until it forgets that it hates you, then lovingly cuddle it).

Kobold weapons don't exist.  The leader of the kobolds is simply the smartest one, and said "here, these are special invisible weapons" and pointed to an empty piece of land.  The kobolds, in their adorable ways, started stabbing people through the power of persuasion.  I figure they mostly just make stabby motions, like a child using their fingers to imitate a gun, and the dwarf finds it too adorable to ignore and simply MUST indulge the kobold, and pretends to be stabbed.  And then bleeds.  Because Dwarf.

maul
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That's a bec-de-corbin, one of many types of polearm. A maul is what most people think of when they see the words "war hammer" - a 2-handed sledgehammer.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I think I learn more from the forums than I do in history class.

"The Germans were against the US in WW2"
"Which side were the Germans on in WW2?"
"The Germans were against the US in WW2"
"Which side were the Germans on in WW2?"
"The Germans were against the US in WW2"

For the entire class..

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

I say that all weapons are formless until just before they hit. As depicted in this hastily drawn 2 minute comic:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This also explains how you can stab hands off with spears; the spearhead is different-sized every time.
stupid idea!!!

Going by their stats in item_weapon, I reckon maces look a bit more like these, which are actually bulawas:

Likewise, war hammers would look like smallish sledgehammer heads on a twelve to fifteen-inch handle.
