Just for funsies I'm reading the Let's Play on the first page of this thread, and I really need someone to tell me if the guy writing it is being deliberately dense for laughs or if he honestly can't identify a Desert Eagle. Please please tell me he is trying to be funny.

I think he is trying to be funny. Next time you may want to give a update number or something to make it easier to find.

I think I am going to pick this game up...
but... for those who have played both brigade e5 and 7.62 should I play the former first?

Gamersgate has both; 7.62 is 40% off right now, but brigade e5 is still cheaper.

If brigade e5 -> 7.62 are like, say Fallout 1 -> 2 then I would want to play Fallout 1 first, for sure, since it is not dated in comparison.
But, if e5 -> 7.62 is more like Jagged Alliance 1 -> 2 I'd consider skipping the first since it is dated in comparison
... if that makes sense.

thanks

I'd consider 7.62 a much better experience overall, if you have patience.  e5 doesn't offer anything special compared to it, really.

So I bought 7.62 ans started playing.

So far fun... one big question tho:
How the heck do I find out more about my merc's contract details? Like, how much time is left ont heir contract, how much they cost, etc?

Cuz, money management is HARD early on, it seems... I can barely keep my first merc employed... so it would be nice to have more solid details of when their contract ends rather than having to wait for him to say its almost over./..

Well, money is no longer as tight now that I've found a briefcase with 20 grand in it... plus the 4 UZIs and sks ripoffs. BUT, it would still be nice to know if/how to check how much time is left on someone's contract and what they cost... anyone?

EDIT: Awww c'mon!? I come to the party a little late and now 7.62 is old news not worth posting about? Foo.

Oh well.. I'll have a discussion with myself then:
I am really enjoying this game. While I have had it crash two times in ~12 in game days I'd say thats not too bad. I save frequently and backup my saves a lot as well.
I like the difficulty of combat and the danger. Getting shot sucks. So far the only damage I've taken without getting wiped out are light grazing wounds, since anything else is usually insta-death or results in death. The shock system is nice too.

This is the first game I have played that actually keeps track of magazines in addition to ammunition. Awesome. I've been wanting that in JA1.13 for quite a while now (its my understanding it is not easy to do...). I like how I can load a mix of, say, ball and hp rounds into a magazine.

Overall I really like the real time smart pause thingy mechanics... Xcom Apocalypse is no longer my go-to game for this type of gameplay.

I also notice my game is vastly different from the SA LP linked in this thread... All the names are different, some of the quests are different, and my $ and gear are different. Not to mention the NPCs in my game actually make sense, 'speaking' in proper sentences with decent grammar.

So far my only big problem is the fact that I can not see my merc's contract details... I may need to start keeping notes with pen and paper. Another thing, what should be in the 'marcs' tab in the notes page (next to 'units' and 'population' and the such). It is empty for me. I thought it would populate with info on the mercs I've met but it has not.

EDIT2: I'll also mention it is tough and fun playing with the hardest difficulty options, except for display hit chance. After playing Hired Guns, I decided any game that doesn't let me know my generalized chance to hit is stupid... even if its just "I may hit it at least 1/100" vs "I will never hit that". Hired Guns sucked. A lot.

EDIT3 (still maintaining my conversation with myself, it seems): So I had my first BMP failure last night. I'm not sure why... from what I've read setting your BMP directory as read only was supposed to prevent it, but somehow 'read only' in this case means 'read only unless you want to break'. Good thing I backed it up after install... got things working again just fine.

I just had pretty sweet encounter in the starting city (I forget its name, the beach city). I was there for normal business when a group of gunmen attacked. A huge shootout erupted between the local police and the gunmen. The amusing part is that the gunmen were neutral to me (I've been maintaining relations with both of those factions, so far). I had been napping with my three mercs in the police station at the time... which kind of sucked because it became a hotbed of grenade activity. Despite my complete non-involvement in the action it was still one of the cooler gaming experiences of I've ever had- watching a battle in the streets unfold before my eyes, taking cover behind police cars in an attempt to wait it out.

Yeah, any time the game just hits you with a massive battle is just awesome, if mainly for the explosions.

Oh, and it's the UNIT tab in the log you want to click to talk to your mercs. The MERCS Tab only has info on the guys not in your party. You still can't tell how much time they have, though.

You have the official translation, which is why everything is actually readable.

Yeah, keeping backups in very highly recommended, lest some horrible bug occur.

Thanks for responding- I was becoming all too comfortable posting to myself.

So I guess I need to just continue keeping track of contract details on pen and paper, then. Oh well.

Yeah, I re-read this thread and thought that I might as well start playing again. It is a fun game, I'll give it that. Buggy as all hell, but still fun.

I played for a bit with the BFX mod. It's awesome. Right at the beginning, I used my spare dosh to rent a merc and buy a shotty with some extra ammo. After the first little bus ambush, I had over $10k, I think. It also landed me one of the SKSes that the mod adds, which is awesome. Methinks the mod may not be as economically balanced as they believe.

I'm guessing this is too old to get at a store, I.E. I must pay a visit to the ebay tubes?

gamersgate.com
as of like two days ago it was still 40% off too

EDIT: In fact, I do not think it was ever out in stores...

Well, I have to say that despite its bugs and problems, this game is probably one of the best I have played in a long while... It definitely makes my top list.
I am completely willing to put up with hourly crashes and near daily corruption of the BMP directory in exchange for the exciting and challenging squad tactics and management experience. And even then, the crashes usually only occur when changing interface (like from sector to map, or something) so they are easily mitigated with liberal use of the F5 key (quick save). The BMP corruption is easy enough to deal with as well- I just have a backup copy of the immediate post install BMP directory which I just copy and replace the bad one with each time.

I experienced another running street battle last night- one which I was merely a spectator for. It was great fun. Although my squad was likely able to hold their own in such a battle, I felt like a civilian trapped in a war torn city; trying to take cover from flying bullets and grenades. Adding a twist, unlike the previous urban battle I witnessed, the rebels won. The city actually flipped to red! awesome.

I think I spend more time managing my squad's loadout than actually fighting or completing jobs, and I love it. I have no car and had no other form of storage, so I always did my best to carry everything I thought I might need, all while making sure no one was overloaded. I tend to play this way in all squad tactics games (JA2, Silent Storm, etc.).

Good fun

Install the BFX mod I talked about, which includes some bugfixes. Also, set the entire BMP directory as read-only as soon as you install.

The only thing I don't like is that shop inventory screens are only viewable at 800x600. The game itself plays beautifully at max resolution and settings, but I hate being unable to use shops.

Is the mod compatible with my saves? And, is the mod compatible with my version? I have the actual English release, something rare, it seems...

Also, what do you mean shops only visible at 8x6 (my zeros seem to be broken...)? is that for you always or just with that mod? because I can see shops just fine ...

And, as I mentioned earlier, I did set the BMP directory to read only after install, yet it still manages to break itself.
