7.62 -- High Calibre
« on: April 08, 2009, 10:51:05 am »

Does anybody have any info on this game? It looks interesting but there are several things that make me suspicious:
-It's published by 1C and my experience with them ranges from average games with highly unintuitive controls(Men of War) to pieces of excrement masquerading as a game(Cryostasis) and very high system requirements all round for no notable graphics whatsoever.
-The highest review score i could find for the previous game is a 4. This normaly means little but i can't find anybody on metacritic who's positive about it either.
-There's a blatant lie(or a retarded translation, trying to stay positive here) in the description: "Sequel to Brigade E5: New Jagged Union, the best strategy game according to the GameLand Award 2005, “Best Computer Games”, “GameLand” and “Game World Navigator” magazines.". A 2005 reward seems a little unlikely for a game that came out in 2006 and received universaly bad ratings.

A guy on GameFAQs says it's out in Russia, with some patches and a fan-made English translation. I can confirm that it's available through questionable sources, so it would appear that it was released somewhere.

It's fully translated and out already, just hard to find in the US, afaik. I wouldn't bother much with it unless you are a real fan of jagged alliance, it's not as good as JA, not even close, but you can waste a few hours on it.

Run down on previous game:
-Best inventory system ever.
-Worst RTwP combat ever.
-One of the most realistic character systems ever.
-One of the most unoptimized engines ever.
-3 factions you could work for.
-Really bad balance.
-Large variety of weapons and addons.
-Tragically hard missions mixed with easy ones. Felt completely random what sort you'd get next.
[EDIT]-Bad open space AI. They were normally good at avoiding corners of death, but out in the open they charged you Red Army style and died in a hail of shotgun fire.

Released in Russia in 2005, though (and I'm betting those magazines are Russian). I can see Russians liking this sort of game - it's hard and it's non-linear. Just like Hammer & Sickle. They must love this stuff.

The game tries to be pretty realistic and it's quite fun if you like this style of game play, but I don't think it's for everyone.

I've had some awesome moments with it, like trying to shot from behind some stairs, hitting the rail, bullet ricocheting and hitting my character on the face, insta-kill-fail-moment.

What are you talking about? Did you play the game drunk? It's the most intuitive game in the RTS realm I've played since about ever.

Yep, while switching a magazine from a quick pocket takes like 2.3 seconds for my character, reloading the magazine, or the weapon by taking the magazine out and reloading taking a long long time. It's pretty realistic, even changing a mag in the open can be potentially dangerous to your health. Shotguns are also freaking deadly, but the reload times? Ugh.
