To survive the spiral, or abandon?
« on: March 20, 2009, 06:01:55 am »

Now, I have a 5 or six year fortress, which had a population of about 130 at its strongest, which is about to enter a tantrum spiral.
Here are the facts:
-93 dwarves
-elf bone artifact shield
-flaming corpse in dining room
-most of human caravan killed by a flaming diamond (had tons of booze and other flamable materials.
-Formerly berserk elf is now burning in trench
-1300 units of booze (fire in stockpile)
-203 animals
-100 dragon bone bolts (☼15000)
-Created wealth is ☼950000, used to be ☼1000000. (fire at depot)
-Cave river cleared out (mostly)
-wildlife extinct

Ride it out.

Ride.  It.  Out.

And for Armok's sake, make a video.  This is gonna be good.

^This!

Plus, you have an elf bone artiffact shield!  What could go wrong?  Ok, a lot.   Get someone that doesn't have any friends or family and go isolate them with that sheild.  That sheild is to live no matter what!

Then record for profit!

By popular demand, I bring you the video in four parts. I had an FPS of fifty, so slow it down to fifty for best results. Unfortunately, the shield was not featured.

The other links are under related movies:

The last part was not recorded properly, It sucks to say the least.
The battle between the berserk jewler and the masons is missing.
A quick summary of it would be mason 1 attacks Jewler and dies, while mason 2 charges in revenge.
They both fight for a while, then the jewler tackles the mason, and both fall into the artificial underground pool.
Mason 2 eventually wins, but couldn't move due to a spinal injury, and drowns.

This is followed by the announcement that says:
No one even considered making a journey to such a cursed death trap this season.

In my opinion, much depends upon the framerate. I had a spiral once at 302 dwarves, and I was faced with doing nothing but hitting the space bar for 12 hours at least while it played out at 3 fps. I don't have the time for that.

Diamonds are combustable, because they are made of Carbon.
I just happened to decide that I had enough food to buy out the human caravan, so I did, and since I had no gem stockpiles for some reason, it just sat there.

Then Spring came, bringing elves and a Dragon, who proceeded to torch the elves while My champions and Marksdwarves ordered another round of drinks, (possibly in celebration). The dragon knocked down the bridges to the depot, so he just stood there on a platform, menacingish, untill he was repetedly shot to death.

I made the mistake or rebuilding the trade depot right where the old one used to be, so come Summer, the humans, who brought tons of booze, drove their caravans over the diamond, letting death steam out of their wagons. I wasn't clued in untill dwarves started dying of the heat.
