So in planing the backup character, I wanted to sue a greathammer, but there don't exist any, can I take the -2 penalty and just use a large warhammer?

If the regular hammer isn't enough, for whatever reason, there's a Barbarian archetype called the Titan Mauler that uses gigantic weapons. Based on the power they get at level 3:

The attack roll penalty for using weapons too large for her size is reduced by 1

you can use one-handed weapons sized for Large creatures as a two-handed weapon at only a -1 penalty, and when you hit level six that drops to no penalty whatsoever.

Bonus: their second-level ability is named "Jotungrip".

Edit: and the reason the warhammer isn't enough is that i imagined this character going to town with a 2-handed hammer, which exists not in the rules

I'm assuming you mean the Mjölnir symbol, but perhaps I could interest you in [⚒], or [🔨], if you can see it? (The latter, if you can't, is a unicode character of a single hammer. It doesn't show up on the forum for me, but as far as I can tell, it shows up on Google Sheets.)

You could also go for ☭ but that seems more like a Vostoch kind of thing to me

on the topic of 2handed hammers, my brother just found one, it's not core (it's from the ultimate equipment guide) but it doesn't look any stronger than the extant 2 handed weapons, as a bonus its name is badass, can I use it?

I wouldn't put it quite like that, but from what I've seen, it's standard practice for everyone to post their actions, then change them if there's a conflict of some sort regarding initiative order.

That's how it goes in literally every single D&D game I've played. Otherwise you have chaos as intended targets die (or become invalid targets), spells shoot off in every direction changing the very face of the battlefield, and that nice bit of cover you were running for no longer exists.

Outside of encounters you can be a bit more free-form, but combat needs to be somewhat structured for the initiative system to work.

Every single D&D game you've ever played, or every single play-by-post D&D game you've ever played? Because in the former, of course you'd do that, it makes sense. But in the latter, when you aren't sitting five feet from the people you're playing with and so generally have to wait much longer for them, it doesn't make any sense. That holds up the game considerably more than it already is by nature of being play-by-post.

Going in whatever order you want is fine in a system where turn orders don't matter, but when people are following a specific order you need to stick with it for maximum smoothness. Otherwise you're just going to have dozens of cases where turns become invalid and you need to wait for people to post new turns anyway.
