The Goblin General's siege just arrived, and was quite promptly subdued at the sacrifice of the incoming dwarven caravan. Luckily the liaison made it in, as well as one of the wagons, so I won't be sending a report of total loss to the mountainhome....
My marksdwarves provided a lot of covering fire for the merchant guards, but they simply couldn't stop ALL the goblins. Most of the caravan was massacred.
The general and his squad of pikemen fled the map after two of their pikemen were incapacitated. Goddamn cowards. It actually seemed that the general would rally them for a short while, but ultimately he ran away before any of his goblin underlings could even catch up.
I would have opened up the fortress to allow my 20 dwarf strong melee militia force to sweep the goblins out but the civilians, bless their idling souls, hopped right at the opportunity to go and grab everything from the battlefield. So ended the siege of 254, with not a single death of a dwarf of Athelilid.
In other news, crundle training is grinding to a frustrating halt, so I'm simply butchering most of them. Even my idle dwarves just don't have the attention span to cater to them.
Efforts in the lower mines to search for additional caverns have thus far been unsuccessful. I believe the first cavern I breached was in fact on the third cavern layer, and so I will have to search upwards to find anything. I have yet to find any magma sea on this map.
The current dining hall, which seats 40, is being expanded to an upper level that can accommodate at least 60 additional dwarves, so hopefully they won't be so crammed in the tower any more.
Lokum Syruplord the Honorable decided it was necessary to wipe some crundle blood off the walls in the lower caves as she was manning the traps. Not only was she carrying her baby, but one of her kids was also following her around. I would HATE to lose her... just so hard to keep the nobles safe.
I recently discovered that my champion is in fact a rather frail, timid old lady. In spite of the fact that she's the greatest swordsdwarf in the fortress. It's good to know how humiliated the goblins must feel when a feeble little dwarf like Kogan (Kogan Oiledvale the Short Taker) slaughters their asses.
At least 8 of my dwarves, who are all in my military, are infected. I feel that they've been this way for ages... I certainly hope nothing comes of it. Is it true that dwarves who are going to die of infection will become pale or faint before they are killed?
...Upon typing that it occurs to me that I have a 160-dwarf fortress, but have yet to discover a single vampire. No deaths drained of blood or anything, but now that I realize what was probably causing the pallor in my infected dwarves I will keep extra vigil all around. I have absolutely no idea who the vampire might be.
