Turns out someone I thought was a friend is an antivaccer. God fuckin' damn it. I knew she'd been slipping into a bit of anti-establishment woo, but the sort of arguments she's putting forth? The whole "fuck you, I've got mine" mentality that these rabid antivaccers are always pushing?
Yeah, I currently live with two Free Energy Libertarian Anti-Establishment Anti-Vaccine "The Fluoride In The Water Will Kill You" Guns Guns Guns Lets Go Back To The Barter System And Have An Armed Rebellion types. It's fun times.
Aw man, I lived with a couple guys like that at RIT a couple years back. Though for them, it was internet-libertarian mixed with UFO conspiracy theories. One night I get back at like 11PM, they're all standing at the window, staring out into the night in awe; they claim they saw a UFO. Thing is, we lived directly under the landing flightpath for the local airport; there were literally flights coming in several times an hour. Naturally, they swear up and down it wasn't an aircraft, and point out the direction it came from... which was the same direction the aircraft typically fly in from. And one of them starting freaking out about the aliens having seen him.
Then another day, they show me this crazy internet-libertarian conspiracy video about the fed, and ask 'so where is all that money they're printing going?!?' I just look at them with my best 'I am disappoint' face, and reply "You don't actually know what the fed does, do you?" And point them to a This American Life episode which explains it quite well.
And they were oh so certain that Ron Paul would win for sure.
That shit's hilarious.
