How do i commit the mass genocide of the exceedingly large animal population in my fort? I was going to butcher them all, but its filling up my food stockpile and it seems to be a big trouble to slaughter them all. Is there a way i can just wipe them out, in a fairly simple manner? I lack magma, so scratch that.

also- is there a way to find out when exactly a dwarf died?

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Dwarven_atom_smasher

Unless you have pet elephants or building destroyer flagged critters, in which case, drop the ceiling on them.

I thought of this because i use a DAM for my dump, but how do you propose i get the animals to all get into one area, under a drawbridge already built? I cant build ropes or chains in the same area as a DAM. I guess if i got really creative i could figure it out..

X's are 1-wide bridges
V's are chains.
Since they can move around at range 1 from the chain, or on the chain itself, the animals have a 66% chance of being under a bridge every time you raise or lower the bridges.

You can set the bridges to oscillate by linking them to several pressure plates in a room that you can fill with water, and empty when you don't want the bridge to oscillate any longer.

To be a little clearer on the oscillation bit.

A room partly filled with water, if you watch it with water depth turned on, you will see that the depth of the water constantly changes unless the water is perfectly even.

a 3x3 room, put one pressure plate for each possible water depth in the room, link them all to each of the bridges.  Fill room partly with water.  You don't need to be precise with water amount, any amount that all tiles are higher than 1 all the time will be fine (water evaporates only at depth 1 if underground)

chop chop.

When the animals are gone, let the water out of the oscillator control room.

It might just be easier to chain animals in a drowning room (animals that can't survive under water), than dump the corpses in a trash smasher.

You can also set up a simpler oscillator (many fewer mechanisms) using a dwarven perpetual motion device.

Make a room whose entire floor is the DAM target area. Drop the animals in through a hole in the ceiling.

Genius, pure genius.  Lol

One small question:

I want to farm outside crops, in security. I read on a random forum thread, than we can make an area ''outside'' and ''light'' by channeling from outside, and cover the hole with floors.

Before trying, it could work or not? Work on (mudded) stone?
Thanks, and sorry for (crappiest?) english.

If you expose underground soil to light, then cover it with a floor from a higher level, you do not need to muddy the soil for aboveground crops.  However you will have to deal with annoying grass unless you make your farm as big as the exposed soil plot.

Same thing if you just start farming on the surface, then enclose the farm in a building.

I play at work on a really weak machine, so I create worlds with no cavern layer (drastically better performance on a weak machine) which unfortunately means no dwarven foods or drinks or ropes.  I've done the belowground surface crops farm thing a few times.

What should I do with all this platinum and native gold that I have?

Save a bit of it, turn the rest into crafts and sell it, or just stud everything with it.  You can make barrels and bins from it too, I think, though I usually use copper or nickel for bins and barrels myself.

If I set a goblin cage to be moved to on top of a floor hatch and then open it (via lever), would the goblin plumet to his death?

Or horde it in a huge stockpile for your future king's room.

If you drop a cage, the goblin would still be inside the cage. Cages don't break on falling impact (nothing does), so the goblin would still be safe inside the cages stasis field.

...and if I link the lever to deconstruct the cage to the same lever as the one that opens the floodgate?

Ok Thank you, that helped me figure it out. I also figured out the military problem(mostly)

Its pretty weird though, because after dumping about half the stones, the dwarves with hauling enabled became idle again, I have no idea why, so it may be a bug. One even had a stone in his hands, and he just left it. There weren't hungry/thirsty/in danger/stupid...maybe stupid.

Anyone know why this might be?

Ramps can be built in such a way that it appears that they are useable, but they are not.  I never build ramps for my dwarves.  If you have any ramps in the path from dwarves to rock and rock to dump, try replacing them with stairs.  See if that fixes the issue.

Additionally, are you using a garbage dump designated from the zones screen, or a stone stockpile designated from the stockpile menu?

If you are using a stockpile, d-b-d to dump rocks won't do anything.  If you have them forbidden, they won't touch them at all.

AND

If you have a big masonry construction project somewhere else in the fortress that is suspended the dwarves will NEVER touch the rock that has already been assigned to job.  Same thing with buildings that you have designated to build, if they aren't built yet.

Whenever you choose to build a building or construction from rock, the rock is irrevocably restricted to only that build action until it is used, or the job cancelled.

I would think that the hatch and the cage would be activated simultaneously, and the goblin fall to his death, but not sure.

I think you can do the same thing with no hatch though.

Urist McJanitor: Psssh. Splatt'rd 'alf a way up th' tower. Pain in th' arse.

Is there any better way to assign individual housing than to manually scroll down the list for every single individual?

If you don't want them sleeping in a certain place, define the room as a bedroom and leave it alone and they'll claim it themselves. Otherwise, it's just the list.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Why are my dwarves not chopping wood when I have ordered them? I have idle axemen but they don't do anything no matter how many times I put a tree chop designation.

Did you embark with axes?
