If the animals are outside, you need to turn on gathering of refuse from outside.  Press 'o', 'r', 'o'.

If I create a tank made of 100% constructed material, pump the water from a murky pool to that tank and back, will the water be clean of contaminants in that murky pool?
If I remove a severed limb from an otherwise clean river, will it clean it?

Is it because I somehow embarked to a location that only the Mountainhomes can contact? Cause the civs screen shows only them...
Yes... yes, it is...
Ah, that's no fun. What kind of attacks can I look forward to, in that case?

Forgotten beasts and the denizens of the deeper depths. Nothing else.

Dig and build directions:  how can I know where my dwarf will stand and in which order he will dig / build?  I couldn't find it on the wiki, yet I swear I found it there at one point in the past.

They will try to dig/build from the left first. If they can't, they'll try to do it from the right, then the top, then the bottom.

When digging out an area, your dwarves will try to dig the leftmost, topmost, deepest tiles first (in that order - they look for the leftmost first, then if there's more than one area thatqualifies, they take the top one, and the same with the deepest one).

So i'm trying to engage a large number of animals in just two cages. Theyve all been assigned to one of the two cages. I only have one or two dwarves working on it, and 70+ idling, with alll of them having animal hauling on, and animal care. Why are none of them doing it? Why just only 2?

The jobs are queued like a regular workshop, so only one dwarf will work on the queued list at a time.

Still trying to fix my problems from earlier. 2 is fixed, but 1 and 3 are still a problem.

Nothing I do fixes the odd military behaviour, im following the wiki step by step. But they refuse to train, they also refuse to equip themselves with the spears and shields ordered.

More importantly, they refuse to dump stones. The garbage dump is active, I checked, I marked the stones I wanted to be dumped. I also tried toggling the forbid and dump option on and off but it hasn't fixed it.

Can anyone think of an answer?

This will all sound very redundant, but i'll list off everything i think of when i want someone to dump a stone:

-Make sure i have sufficient number of idle peasants with nothing preoccupying them
-Get a peasant with hauling enabled
-See for myself that he unquestionably has pathing to the stone i want dumped
-See that the stone is labeled for dumped, and not {forbidden}
-Look at the path from the stone going to the dump, and making sure it's connected
-Making sure the dump has "active" highlighted, as well as "garbage" highlighted.
-Make sure in my
  • rders that dwarves are NOT ignoring stones outside, if the stone is outside (generally i order them to gather all things of every nature)

-Make sure nothing keeps interrupting my dwarves from trying to pick up or dump things.

Ok Thank you, that helped me figure it out. I also figured out the military problem(mostly)

Its pretty weird though, because after dumping about half the stones, the dwarves with hauling enabled became idle again, I have no idea why, so it may be a bug. One even had a stone in his hands, and he just left it. There weren't hungry/thirsty/in danger/stupid...maybe stupid.

Anyone know why this might be?

Now I'm sure this has been dealt with already...but I dearly need to know.

Let's say I use my army to hunt down...oh, two-humped camels, say.

So I have eight poorly-trained, poorly-armed bearded psychos running down these camels.  After a merry chase, they finally reach their prey and begin hitting it with whatever they have handy.  The camels pass out.  The dwarves...stand there.  When the camels wake up again, the soldiers will attack them until they go unconscious, but they will never actually get around to finishing the job.  The just stand around the water cooler camel and trade shampoo and beard-conditioner tips.  This happens all the time.  How do I cure them of this undwarfy behavior?

I'm not sure if this will work, but try putting a direct kill order on the camels.

Make sure one of them has a real weapon, like an axe or a sword. Afterward, when its dead, make sure to cancel the order or theyll sit around the corpse indefinitely.

I once had an elephant retreat from an elven raid, and i had, at that point, drafted every standing citizen to the army, unequipped with any weapons or equipment of any kind -- they beat that elephant into subconscious, and continued beating it, for at least an in-game week. I counted 11 dwarves, on every square surrounding the elephant, all of them becoming wrestlers, as they just continued to beat the ever living shit out of this elephant, never killing it, until many of them were becoming "Tired". Finally i drafted another dwarf, but first told him to grab a sword. Sure enough as soon as he showed up with a sword, he cut it down and ended the misery of the elephant.
