I recommend simply dual wielding the corpses of his buds and beating him with them.

I stalked the bandit survivors from my previous post and killed them in the woods - took a hammer from the last one as he was crawling around on the ground and bashed his head in with it.

I later returned to the city and found a bandit in a random house shooting at a baron - I would have let him finish the job if he didn't stop firing at me as well. I retired later on, figuring this adventurer was lucky enough to have survived for this long.

After a few hours of me and an equally skilled swordsman unable to harm each other, I decided I'd give my fist a try... Upon sheathing the blade, I punched my opponent in the face... Teeth flew everywhere and he passed out soon after. Fists OP.

Bim encounters an average sized giant animal (jaguar?) recruit by the name of Faintflush who's marauding through a hamlet. Perfect sparring partner to take novice biter/striker/kicker to adequate after 3 sessions. Not as delicate as a bipedal bandit, so Faintflush and Bim are able to go their separate ways after training. Biting does cause some scars to Faintflush's belly.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The stat tier goals are being reached. Willpower and kinesthetic sense which started at above average rollover to high during the first session. Spatial, a dwarf's best stat (aside from focus) started at average, but turns over to high as well by the last session.

So the endurance/dodger/observer build is coming along. Intuition which started as above average remains there, but that's always been the hardest to advance with one-on-one's. At the beginning of the run, Bim swam toughness and endurance to superior, not unlike the way you'd follow an S&C program for whatever sport and exertion is mitigated by the combination of better endurance modified by the good effects of high willpower. The last run, Bim became tired sooner, given he had only begun with average willpower. There's also the good stat synergy for things like dodger which benefit from spatial and kinesthetic.

The region has virtually no animals in the wilds, so Bim runs out of food and kills a duck in town. Unfortunately, it's too small to butcher. But he trades the drake corpse and a spool of giant cave spider silk for 10 fisher berries.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He hasn't cooked anything yet either. Diet has been raw meat and fruit. It's just turning out this way.

ADVENTURE HAS OCCURRED.

Erith the unarmed combat specialist was scouting about for the source of local goblin raids. She infiltrated some dark pits that appeared abandoned ONLY THEY WERE NOT.

She found a central chamber and was separated from her companion, Bomrek, by trolls. From the sounds of combat he fared quite poorly. She fought off 3 trolls and 2 beak dogs by dodging and throwing bolts. She killed none, and ended up dodging down a hole. After 10 or so failed attempts, she grabbed onto the wall face and climbed down into the caverns.

HOWEVER two trolls had followed her. Unwilling to fight two trolls on a 1x1 platform she jumped to the far wall. She failed this and ended up in some water. This water had a hole in the bottom, apparently being an underwater waterfall. She's now climbing down this waterfall to escape her troll pursuants.

Speaking of gargoyles, had an unexpected occurrence while clearing out a lair with half a dozen of them. Doing the usual "attack and dodge at the same time" trick, when for once the bugger caught my obsidian spear in mid-strike. Since I dodged away too, it kept ahold of it. Now to see if my obsidian axe will do the trick.

EDIT: And in yet another gargoyle lair, I find something inside evidently wants to join in the fun.

My last few adventurers have had good runs - most have been surviving long enough.

My current one managed to get a slab of biomancy, learned its secrets and also brought it to a large tol'vir town across the desert. Composed a poem too - with no subject matter and mediocre prose. Also managed to kill a scylla who made her hideout in a shrine.

I'm thinking of making a standard bard adventurer next, just going around and telling stories.

I swear, this island is batshit. I'm dealing with a lair where around a fucking dozen ettins came blundering out of it, and suddenly a hydra wanders over to say hi.

EDIT: Five dead hydras later...

I'm torn between switching to a hydra tooth spear, or sticking with what's been a rather reliable weapon since day one. Set it so megabeast bones and teeth have better cutting value, but obsidian still has a higher max edge...

That's one hell of a time card.

Went ahead and made a hydra fang spear, while keeping my old obsidian spear just in case.

I hate bogeymen sooooooooooooooo much!
Companions had insomnia? (They always do.) Dead!
No roof? Dead.
Settlement under occupation? Dead.
Managed to run to run to a town? Dead.
Waited till dawn? Dead.

What are their fists made of..?! They exploded my shell, massacred an entire elven village, and even if I hide in a house or in the air it takes at least an hour of pressing '.' to reach dawn. If I run, they teleport with a chance to grow wings. If I wait two hours in my cabin, they keep cackling all night outside the door (or just open it). If I'm sleeping right next to an elf or a companion, that just means more will spawn! If they're not ambushed or stunned, I miss 70 times in a row (not exaggerating). Simple strikes, precise attacks, none of them hit. Even when they're wailing on my allies they don't get any easier to hit. And if two are attacking me at once, it doesn't matter how good my dodge and shield skills are.

ambushed by some sort of insanely powerful night creature... gets lucky and killes it with a flung spear. take one step in travel mode, game crashes

Based on a quick perusal of a few uncompressed saves, night trolls have a natural skill level of six, while bogeymen have a level of nine. Also, I stand slightly corrected. The lowest-level angels have a natural skill-level of four, something that no other random-creatures have. So, at least one tier of angel can be modded without changing anything else.

So bogey's have professional level dodge. While you don't need stat parity for your weapon skill, you do want it defensively***, just to be safe. As this shielding thread suggests, defense is only as good as its chance of failure. The gambler might say you can be two level down defensively, but the rate of failure will be much higher.

***To add to the above level suggestion, is if you want to reduce chance of failure when passively defending (you auto block/dodge) you don't want parity. You want a 1-2 level advantage.

Other bogeymen avoidance methods, when under-leveled defensively, are to avoid overland travel unless by mountain range or to travel by exclusively by coast.

If you must make overland travel without access to ranges, carry 2 logs with you at all times. In some cases you actually just need one to build a roof tile over an upward slope tile that's adjacent to a naturally occurring wall. This is 1 hour of building time. When no naturally occurring wall is available, then you'll need the two logs, one for the wall and one for the roof.
