Sometimes you can catch them way off in the distance with binoculars, and then they disappear.

Or you notice when they start whacking you, ala this:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The eyes don't glow so much in CoP as the older games.

Their movement does give them away, aslong as you yourself aren't moving. Then, those two little dots are near invisible.

AND THEN THEY RIP YOUR FACE OFF. AND TAKE A MAGAZINE OF AMMO.

This game looks interesting. I saw that there's 2 others on steam but none of them have demos so i'm wary of buying them.

What exactly am I looking at, there?  The two slanted white dots on the right side through the open doorway?

These are the eyes. If you look close, you'll notice some predator-esque cloaking.

Or look up from the blood splatter on the ground and you can see a faint outline and claws... but yes, that's from the earlier games so the eyes give it away.

I got SoC on Steam for $5, a while back. It's the only game I've bought recently that I didn't regret buying. However, every mod I've seen for it, despite the lavish praise I've seen here, is unimaginably horrible and will ruin the game forever for you. I haven't played since trying LURK because it was just that bad. I also got Clear Sky from a friend a few weeks ago, but it's still in a rar on my external, haven't gotten around to installing it yet, so I can't comment on that.

Get Stalker: Complete 2009 then, it doesn't do anything but graphical enhancements and bug fixing, otherwise it's the same game.

Just a quick note, I fired up Stalker for a brief moment and I saw movement in the bottom corner of my eye - my jacket fell off the back of my chair.

I almost leapt right out of my freaking chair before I realized what happened.

Yeaaaaaaaaah, no Stalker playing tonight.

God dammit.  I should know better than to read about Stalker just before going to sleep.  When I read Roadside Picnic, I had nightmares for two nights straight.

One of the worst thing about LURK was that it replaced all the meshes in the game with ridiculously inefficient yet significantly uglier ones, as far as I could tell. It made it so that even on the lowest graphical settings it barely reached a playable framerate. And it was running very well with fairly high settings before that, so...

Edit: this has inspired me to get around to installing Clear Sky.

It might depend on your computer. On mine - almost everything maxed out - it looked absolutely fantastic except for some ATI driver clipping issues that I fixed. LURK comes with a few different options when you install it to override weather, graphics, whatnot.

It's more grimdark than Stalker Complete but Complete still looks better overall.

I just dislike Oblivion Lost on principle of the modder stealing everything from other mods and acting like a jackass as if he's God's gift to modding. Game also doesn't feel like Stalker anymore.

I loved LURK's weapon variety, but hated the weapon stats, and the fact that all armour in the world was leather jackets. Even when it made sense to be not leather jackets.

I hate Kanyhalos and everything he stands for.

I played AMK with Armoury and PLR's Realistic Weapons. It was really bloody hard.

That is the only way to play - crotch-punchingly frustrating.

Well, the beginning of Clear Sky is every bit as horrible as SoC's, due to laughable armor and weapons that can't hit the broad side of a barn at point blank, so... that's a good sign? :3

My skills must be rusty, too much ME2 and Borderlands recently. :/

Remember in SoC, when you finally got a gun that could shoot straight-ish? That was pretty sweet, wasn't it? 8)

If you mean that modified assault rifle, then yes, it's freaking awesome.

"Hey, I killed him. With ONE bullet!"
I gave it a scope and a grenade launcher, and kept it until much, much later.
