Stalker Series
« on: February 12, 2010, 01:09:19 pm »

Just got released a few days ago. If you don't have it yet, go get it already! On steam and probably impulse, as well as amazon and the normal gamestop places i think.

Oh, and also-How do i use the sleep function, and the scope i just bought won't attach to my starter AK. Any ideas?

If you already own another STALKER game and have it registered with steam you can get a discount on Pripyat.

Same as in the first game, it's probably a NATO scope and won't fit that gun. You can find scopes that do, but that isn't one of them.

But then, life was also easier when I was running around here pretending to be a man, so I guess I should just "man up" and get back to work.

This is probably the most accessible and well done STALKER game out of box, so definitely get it if you can. We have to thank the Russians for beta-testing it for us all those months ;)

Hows the MP in this one?

Haven't picked it up yet but plan to, really enjoyed the other two (with and without mods).

Does the discount last forever or is it just for the release? I can't decide If I should buy it. After SoC Stalker just lost It's feel for me.

Ah, well in this one i found out that you have to buy the fitting for your gun to install the scope, with RU of course. So after spending 2,000 RU ingame altogether for the fitting and scope, it worked! I also found a grenade launcher for it, and i got a professionial pistol from the contractor upstairs.. Mm... oh! And i figured out you have to find a sleep area ingame to sleep somewhere. Definitely one on the Skadovsks, second level, first left, then first right.

Did they put blowouts in vanilla yet, or will that have to wait for mods?

Yeah, blowouts are in. They're fairly frequent.

It's fairly polished, really, although some of the animations and sounds still irk me. Kick-arse music, though. Especially the credits and the outro.

And if someone wanted a game of multiplayer, I'll party. Never done it before, since I modded SHOC to hell and back and missed out on CS.

How "free-form" is the game? I bought the first Stalker (Shadow of Chernobyl, iirc), but that just had a couple of zones linked to eachother. Not small, but certainly not "OMG-BLEW-MY-MIND".

I couldn't tell you how much larger the zones are, but true free-form would have been crazy, given the amount of stuff the engine is already trying to cope with.

There's also a lot more things to do, and all of the quests are unique.

You do get free-play at the end, though, if you choose not to take the evac.

Oooh Blowouts are awesome...  Are they improved at all from the ones in the mods of the original?  Not that those were bad, but I'm sure there're tons of ways they could be better.

From what I understand they're an instant kill to everything in the open at the time of emission, which is understandable considering the proximity to the NPP, but that can cause lag as the several hundred entities or whatever keel over. The way damage was given in mods was definitely better, I think, although it would defeat the point of the anabiotics if you could just down a dozen anti-psy and sit there grinning like a loon. And the achievement that gives crazy psy resistance would be broken then...

You do get help on where safe places to hide are via missions, so you don't have the problem of running into e.g. an underground area of Pripyat in the original with AMK and still having an aneurism. That was annoying.

And if the glowing, ominous sky wasn't enough, you do get a pair of radio warnings and an all-clear.

In the modded original I never slept alone...  Alway sleep near some buddies so you can follow them after a blowout starts.  The first time it happened was really freaky because I was already inside, but woke up and then saw a whole bunch of guys all run inside with their guns out and stand there looking worried, just about the same as I was.  The second time though I was out by a camp with two other guys and it woke me up again.  it was already nearly pitch black, but all three of us just ran like hell for a tunnel.  Somehow we made it.
