1866 looks fun

Goddammit.  Five hours of my life, gone!  Just that fast.  But hey, call me Aaron Burr, 'cause I got my own New Confederate Army going here.

Also, all those old Westerns where they show guys banging away with pistols from across a street and hitting air?  Yeah, they're pretty accurate.  The depiction that is, not the pistols.  Not in the slightest.

Could you link me to this mod, i couldn't find it :P

Horsemen are unstoppable unless you can neutralize their mobility.
Stand on top of a hill or by a bunch of tree and press 1 then F1. Then you can press 4 and F3. Profit.

I'm talking about from the perspective of the horrifically incompetent Rhodoks, though.
I deal with horsemen by running them down with better horsemen.

The Advanced Soldier Tree/Command Mod really balances the game out, most factions have new specialist units that kick ass; The Rhodoks in particular because they have a new "Phalanx" unit which surprisingly doesn't use a F'n spear but they throw really powerful pilla that will knock your ass from the saddle, Swadians have BIGGER CAVALRY in the shape of the new Juggernaut, Nords have new berserkers, Vaegir have new "Specialists" which are powerful archer/swordsmen, and now the Khergit have COMPETENT GROUND INFANTRY, new bandit and mercenary  trees with assassins and super sea raiders. It's pretty cool, you also no longer have to take the keep of a castle/city with crap units because it allows you to choose what units to take with you. It goes on further but he hasn't listed the ENTIRE troop lines as far as i know.

Yeah. It is a lot harder to hit something with a pistol under stress than people think. THat even includes when using modern firearms.
I am a little disappointed with 1866's reload times, though. THey intentionally chose a period of time that pretty much every pistol was of ball and cap style. Reloading was slow and annoying. The fact I can put 6  rounds and caps in a pistol while riding full speed in 2 seconds is really kinda lame.

I do '1' 'F1' 'F8' (if f8 is stand closer, otherwise f10... i forget which is which)
The first charge may kill some of my men, but more often than not, the horses are skewered by pikes and/or spears and if not, the enemy are trapped in the midst of my army and cannot maneuver.
This tactic fails miserably against the Khergit though. I hate fighting the Khergit.

Unless you have Nords, that strategy would fail pretty hard against my army.

Swadian Knights are expensive for a reason. That reason is that they have a... substantial (to say the least) quantity of health, armor, and power. Get them on foot and Nords will kill almost a fourth as many knights as the number of casualties they take, but barring that, the knights will just crash into you and start hitting crap while my Khergits would poke you while strafing around your army.

There's a reason you don't encounter armies that draw substantial numbers of troops from multiple factions, I think. <_<;

I'm not sure I entirely understand your post.
But, it seems you are saying my strategy of bunching up against knights does not work against Swadian Knights? I disagree. The AI of charge cavalry fails against bunched troops. Your army may work great against the AI, but thats because the AI doesn't bunch up their soldiers against your charge. They counter charge.
Try my strategy, take a bunch of troops (preferably spear or pikemen, dismount them for best results), and have them stand ground and move close when against an enemy cavalry charge. The Cav will strike your line hard but since your troops are stationary they will have readied attacks. More often than not your readied foot troops will kill the horses of the charging cav before taking a hit. Sure, some of your men will die but I find the numbers to be minimal. But you then have the advantage of facing a completely stopped enemy cavalry force. Hitting your line of close together troops will stop the charge. From there, your forces will easily pick off a majority of the cavalry within seconds while the cavalry attempts to maneuver. The trick is to hold the line. Do not have your men chase the cav that manage to maneuver out and retreat.
And, you mentioned Khergits... I ignored that part, because as I pretty clearly admitted, my strategy fails against Khergits.

Well, the whole point of my army is to have a shitton of cavalry, with about a 2:1 ratio of hardcore melee and mounted archers, all top level. I'm not sure how many horsemen the game would let me bring in for that particular confrontation, but what tends to happen is so many of them are moving around that they just keep bumping into the enemy soldiers and preventing them from striking.

I have seen the Rhodok AI bunch up and go stationary. When I went for my usual couched-lance attack they promptly unhorsed me, so I cut their line open from behind... S'what they deserve for laming my first Spirited Courser. >:[

And like I was saying, I'm pretty sure that armies that can draw from multiple factions (i.e. Suede Knights with Khergit Vet Horse Archers, or Nord Huscarls with Vaegir Pro Bowmen) are much stronger because they can pick the best parts of each faction. So... yeah. Straight-up Rhodoks kinda suck. :I

hehe, well, you also have the advantage of you with your army against a close together line:-)
I guess I need to account for that when I try to claim my strategy is good. I should amend my statement that I think my strategy is good against the AI:-)
I am hoping warband will make things more interesting. I've only ever played all player battles and never dealt with the AI (not sure if you can in the beta, I've only played a bit).

On a side note, do any of you play with perma death mods? I am trying to find a good mod that involves a chance of perma death. The only ones I've found had 100% perma-death, meaning, if you lost, you died. period. I want one with a chance of death, perhaps based on damage taken... Or, the ability to surrender and not die.

Well, almost anything you use works against the A.I. (except Khergits because they just ride around all day) if you have a solid army.
Anything you use except Rhodoks.
<_<

I think once I finish my run of Swadian Supremacy, I'm going to make a silly all-Vaegir-Archer army. We will move slowly and be helpless at close range but BY GOD YOU WILL HAVE A HARD TIME APPROACHING US.

Oh, and back to the subject of Rhodoks: I think it says a lot that I spent ages sieging one of their castles when I made the mistake of seeing if you can really starve them out, and defeated 2 oversized Rhodok lord armies on average every day for 20 days, boosting my renown up to over 1000 with a total loss of like 2 Suede Knights, 2 Suede Men at Arms, and like 1 of my Horse Archers in training. <_<;

...can you?
I've never tried. I can't imagine waiting that long, much less surviving against the likely constant enemy attacks (Except I guess against the rhodoks)
