Mac gamer?

Funny how quickly things become outdated in gaming.  I wonder if any of the Rooster Teeth guys even game on PCs anymore.

I've been playing warband recently. it is actually quite fun. I happen to suck, but I have fun dying.
I feel like the attack swing timing is off a bit from original. For example, doing a drive by clubbing I need to start my swing much earlier (farther from the enemy) in order to make proper contact with their skull.
Is that just me, or does anyone else feel the same?
Otherwise I enjoy the equipment cost regulations, it makes for some neat decisions. Go for the better weapon or armor?.

For fun, I also tried out a bit of 1866. Thats a blast. I had been looking forward to it for a long time (There are no good western games these days). I didn't know the beta was released until reading you folks mentioning it.
I feel like the constant roaming groups of outlaws are a little annoying though- it wasn't often you would run into an army of 75 outlaws in the 19th century American West.
I'd also like if there were more opportunities for close range combat. The average non-millitary gunfight occurs at 21 feet. Thats actually a today value, but I am pretty sure historical Wild West fights were similarly close range. I know the O.K. Corral shootout had the Earp band and the Clayton band within a couple of feet of each other.
All-in-all I'd be interested in seeing the 'civilian' armies smaller (like 20 men max) and the 'military' groups stay the same size. I have no clue how to facilitate that other than making troops cost a heck of a lot more to hire and maintain, but having nations subsidize your costs if you are riding for an army... or something.
With more work and more quests, I think 1866 will be one of my favorite games... -err, mods.

I felt the same way about Warband, and I know it's not lag because I tried a quick battle first.

I need to try this 1866 mod.

I think warband lacks one slot for commander, who could see the map as RTS and command the units around. Depending on the team you get to play with, battles can be really stupid.

I've found that Nords and Rhodoks kick ass.

Sadly that has never worked... I think BF2 did a very good job with commander roles and capabilities, but just as the players were self-serving idiots, the commanders came from the same stock. And even when you got a good commander, no one obeyed his/her anyways.

It works in Natural Selection, and in Empires Mod, and in Savage... :P  Course in NS the Marines could only win by working together with their commander unless the Aliens just totally sucked, and in the toher two games the side that worked better together with the commander would usually beat a group of completely disorganized but individually superior players.

I'm not sure what Empires Mod or Savage are, but I've played NS and while I agree it has a nice command system, I've never seen it used well. Admittedly I have not played much, though. I always had trouble finding active servers when I tried. Perhaps if I took the time to find a good server with a proper player base my experience would be different with these games... but as it stands I find 'random' players do not utilize the command tools or otherwise ignore them and play a 'solo' game.
Sure, every now and then you randomly stumble across a few folks that play as a unit or team, but usually you few are a small subset of your side, and cannot truly experience the ... ermm, experience desired.

If you know of some nice dedicated servers with loyal player-bases that utilize the command systems properly let me know. I'd love to experience it. Unfortunately the only games I've ever been a part of a server community are CoD (series) and IL2 (oh god, IL2 is amazing if you can orchestrate organized tactics and flights)... oh, those and WWIIonline. But with the exception of wwiionline those games don't have dedicated command tools implemented.

Well I haven't played NS is a long time.  It used to be that you could find decent games that used the commander role effectively fairly regularly.  There were some times where people would just hop in to plop something down and then hop out again, those usually ended up with the marines getting owned by a decent alien team.

Savage is a mix of RTS and FPS, where one player assumes the role of commander and builds things, also issue orders. Funny thing is that the units that speed up building constructions are also players. So yeah, takes a bit of intelligence and skill to do well in that game.

Commander gameplay example
Builder gameplay example

It works pretty well. But I feel Savage lacks variety and bigger matches, so it bored me pretty fast. It probably would work best for Warband.

Don't forget ARMA 1 and 2. That worked, because the sort of people that played both those games in multiplayer a lot weren't idiots, because idiots died very fast.

Well those vids are from Savage 2, but actually I think that one is better than the first anyway.

Yeah Savage one had AI builders.  I can't actually remember if Savage 2 had any AI units at all.
