Can confirm. Old laptop died due to a buildup of dust (and tea).

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

Close it ;3
Because dust is not your laptop's friend. :I
Yoink was complaining about a problem. The problem was how the laptop disconnected from the internet when the lid is closed.

I was offering an easy (snarky) solution of not closing the lid. Not saying he should never close the laptop ever, but just when he needs the laptop connected to the internet.

Oh o_O I assumed it was something due to a process occurring when he does it. Oops me!
Though I'm still assuming that because it'd be really weird for a laptop to disconnect from the internet (considering that there are processes running that are required to keep running in order for WiFi/Internet connection to be stable), so I assumed something cut in the way (ie Hibernate/ShutDown/Sleep process, which pauses or halts any other process currently running).

I assumed it was something to do with its sleep/hibernate settings, but I already checked all that and closing the lid shouldn't do anything, and it shouldn't go to sleep for an hour whilst connected to power. Oh well, I ended up just almost closing the lid and letting the display eventually turn off.

If you need to download something overnight (I assume that's why you get upset about losing connection when the lid closes), what I used to do was drape something over the laptop's screen, like a jacket. Not covering the vents mind, but blocking the glow enough that I could sleep.

It's actually possible to setup a desktop shortcut to turn off the screen.

You could just install dimscreen and set it to 90% opacity. I use it since my room is usually pretty dark and a light page otherwise makes the monitor obnoxiously bright.

Actually I was listening to a song whilst relaxing. If I was downloading I could just leave the lid open and have the screen turn off without the risk of accidentally bumping it closed. Still, just leaving it slightly ajar worked well enough, even if I'd rather have it closed.

It's amazing what frightful headway I can make when I just don't do my job. Since waking up, I've paid my university bill and a traffic violation fine, done my Program of Study paperwork, done laundry, gotten groceries, and finished half of a homework assignment, all in the name of not having to do this goddamn soul-crushing drudgery for as long as possible. I've run out of other stuff to do, though.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

f.lux last I checked just tints the screen colors. That actually gave me rather serious headaches.

my dad, evidently jealous of mom (?) followed her to wal mart for some reason. She got mad at him, yelled at him there. I was just told of this by phone dad hasn't come back just yet and mom has been home a good 15 minutes before him....

He called & told me to not say he called when he informed me of this.... I asked him was everything alright and what happens now. His response, "Nothing susposedly, I'll talk to you soon."

Mom's back and drinking. Yay....

Damn it.
