Don't feel that way! It's fantastic.

"Ohmmm...Volllllllt...Waaaaatt..."

I didn't get it until someone pointed it out. I feel dumb. But it's awesome.

Today was my first time I've hit another vehicle on the road today in my more than five years driving. Not a big crash, just at a stop light, the ground was slick with ice, and I do a slow 5mph sliding bump into the rear of another car. Braking and turning did nothing, the course for impact was set the moment I rolled onto the ice.

The car owner didn't get out, he just kept on driving as if nothing happened, and in reality nothing DID happen, there was no visible damage to either of us from my perspective. I just feel bad about it.

Hopefully the car insurance devils weren't spying on me from Geico hell, or else my premiums just went up in the afterlife.

Doc said I had a minor virus on Friday. Saturday I felt meh. Sunday I felt fine.
Sunday night I felt like crap, had to use a whole tissue box and couldn't sleep because either something kept me up right before I slipped into sleep or I woke up 5~10 minutes after sleeping. Today is Monday, first day of school since break and I feel like pure crap, unholy amounts of gunk in my nose and through and possibly minor fever but the thermometer was broken so who knows.

Been there before. Here's hoping you get better soon. Might you take a sick day to rest up a bit?

Nope, I won't be doing that with my current classes.

Aw well. Been there, too :(. Well, if you can, get something steamy, like soup or a hot drink, that should help with the gunk. Or find something really really spicy, and smell it (don't eat it!).

Apparently you're supposed to tap the brake in icy conditions rather than holding it all the way down. My dad explained that the brake pad doesn't always catch right or something like that. I found it a little hard to remember doing it the first few times, since your instinct when the car won't seem to stop is to brake as hard as you can, but once I got the hang of it, it seems to help.

It sounds like JoshuaFH's problem wasn't stopping the wheels turning but stopping the car from sliding on the ice after the wheels stopped.

Also, I think many modern cars have an automatic system to pulse the brake like you descibe.

Yup. ABS has been in cars since the seventies.

Indeed, manuals say that if your car does have ABS then you are specifically supposed to not pulse the brake, since it interferes with the ABS functioning correctly, a thing that its sensors will allow it to do much much better than you.

I live in perpetual winter, I can confirm that, sometimes, slamming your breaks and praying won't help. Nearly rear ended someone because they cut me off in an 80 km/h zone by passing my via a left turn lane, the slammed on their breaks at a light as it just turned yellow. Luckily, he did the one non-idiot thing and stopped breaking and sped through when he realized he wasn't going to stop in time. I was still travelling about 50 at that point and just about to smack him. Nearly died of a heart attack.

TL;DR bad drivers get worse in snowy/icy conditions, sometimes you just can't stop.
