Y'know, all this complaining about money and costs and stuff reminds me of one of the reasons why it's good to be Canadian. Socialized healthcare (Or whatever the hell it's called. I'm too lazy to look it up ATM).

Brofist from the Socialist Utopia of Scandinavia. It's good to know that there's more good things up here besides the weather. Reading the near constant cries of things that are wrong in the US today make me a bit sad for the people there. Appropriate for the thread I suppose.

And the person who wrote it is a proud member of our forum. :P I was so proud. And I (and many others) contributed towards his writing it. Ah the wonders/horrors that were the now dead pony threads.

Argembarger was the best barger there ever was. Though I haven't seen him around for a while. His avatar was the Mayor from Homestuck.

My cobra insurance was going to be over $1000 a month after I got laid off in Sept '08. At the time, that was more than my rent, food and electricity combined.
Iwas looking at over $1200/mo. "Do you have any hobbies that may result in personal injury?" Indeed. :P

I read that as "Dwarven Injury." Not trying to be insensitive either....

Working "reduced hours," still have full workload expected of me. Not getting it done in less than half the time O'boss. Yes people are calling yelling at you about stuff and it isn't my damn problem at all, because what did you think would happen...? I just look right at him.... It takes time and at some point I'd like paid for that.

To buy a private plan? It's so expensive no one can really afford it. Thus, employers traditionally provided it. Except of course now they don't want to/don't feel like paying for it/sometimes actually can't pay for it. Self employed people have a hell of a time with this. I, for example, have no health insurance due to this.

A quick wiki search led me to this... linked as its .svg and large, and not everyone loves a graph as much as me.

Wow. Just wow. So here in the UK our universal healthcare costs far less in relative terms than your system? Im gonna stop complaining about my national insurance contributions from now on.
There's a hidden factor there that skews the cost (doesn't invalidate the underlying problem, of course, and in fact worsens it). The levels of unneccesary treatments (many parents drag their children to the ER at the first sign of the sniffles, and the high profitability of medical torts leads to huge numbers of legal screenings) and elective surgeries (bariatrics, cosmetic surgery, and "c-for-comfort-sections") are extremely high over here. Along with that, the high cost of drugs here is used as a form of subsidy to keep them cheaper elsewhere (the drug companies are forced into a low profit margin in other markets, so they make up for it at home.)

Hey, Truean. Have you looked into what you'd need to do to become a Lawyer in Ontario? I mean... You talk a lot about wanting to move to Canada, I have to assume you've looked into it and written it off as a no-for-now/ever?

I'd love to have a kick-ass LawyerNinja in the vicinity. :D

Apparently there's some big initiative to increase the Bay Area's population by 25%.

Fucking excellent.

... *facepalm*

Seriously, we've got enough people here.  In related news, the local Goodwill is trying to sell people's recycling for 80 cents a pop (peanut butter jars and stuff).  What the hell?  This is a super-rich place, and that's the best they've got?

pish posh....I've been to the Bay Area. There's plenty of room to cram more people in. Shanghai fits 80 million people in an area about a quarter the size of the whole Bay Area. Granted, you'll have to give up things like clean water, clean air, any kind of sustainability....
