I believe what he meant was basically, to even have an argument acknowledged requires you to be shocking, in order to shake people from their comfortable reveries and give you attention.

It's a common tactic.

That's true.  I do feel that way sometimes (a lot of the time >_>) when I'm arguing.

Well I don't acknowledge 'em and everybody should feel bad for doing so.

On the other hand, it always feels that when I'm talking about... say... feminism, I have to rage everywhere and divulge personal stories or no one will listen.  And then people tell me they're grateful for my raging, including you.

Our opinions do match to a significant extent, this is not surprising, since we socialise in IRC to a significant degree, but we're not posting in any sort of coordinated effort.

Bah, sorry.  That was on the not-so-clear side, and I'd completely forgotten about the dogpiling charge.  My language was insensitive.  What I meant was that the main point you all seem to share--that there's an issue here--is one that I share, rather than the "everything is fine here forever" point of view, or "meh, it ain't broke" point of view that might be seen as an antithesis.

I really just had to ensure we weren't lumped in together as some sort of united force again. No mistake, we have actually dogpiled in the past, but we don't do that anymore. We have since been warned again, despite not actually doing it, and this is really something that does annoy us, since it means we can't generally participate in a forum topic together anymore, lest we be charged with it again.

No, of course.  Thank you for the correction, and I'll try to keep that in mind next time we're all in a thread together.

Hmm... may be an avatar confusion.  My mistake, then.

It's a common tactic.

Eh maybe. I had a remark here, but then I thought of something. Can you point put a time where being polite about the fourms issues did not work?

I meant in a more general sense. Don't you notice these tactics being used in every aspect of the media in order to advertise or get ratings?

Ah yes. I have. The point I was going to say ws just because it is common does not make it good.

I'm sad that 3dsmax isn't working right on my home comp.

As for all this drama, eh.

that's all I have to say about it.

I can't, but that's because I've never seen anybody being polite about that kind of stuff.

Retro's thread the last time this shit happened? It actually turned into a fairly reasonable, polite discussion of the problem. At which point it promptly died and was buried.  :-\

Not that I agreed with his main argument, but it was nice that it was at least being discussed.

No, no it isn't. But it's also fairly telling of society that this needs to be done to get their attention.

Things that made you sad today thread.

The fact that I woke up to the kind of thing that killed another forum I once frequented. And then proceeded to spend two hours trying to piece together what happened when I should have been studying for the quiz I have today.

I only have myself to blame.

Truth is right here. I also like it when people say "It could be worse." Yeah, but it's also worse having two legs on fire rather than one, still not any good.

It is, though. People have become desensitised to other methods of getting attention.
To get attention you either need to be shocking or clever. And the former is much easier than the latter.
