I think I have two books of the clouds though, so I could certainly afford to get rid of one of them... I guess technically I should get rid of freezing cloud, and use bolt of cold more, for maximum resistance flexibility.
Well, isn't freezing cloud your best spell against undeads and other Poison-resistant monsters ?
Because if you want to go in anything other than Vault/Abyss/Slime, you'll need it more than Poison cloud ...
Unead have two(?) ranks of cold resistance, so they take really tiny damage from frozen clouds.
But yeah, IMHO freezing cloud in general is a better spell then poison cloud (unless you are in a area with cold resistant or poison susceptible enemies).

I think keeping  poison cloud is a good idea from when you'll get access to Ignite poison.

Allowing you to basically transform the poison clouds into fire clouds in case you have a poison resistant monster that has no fire resitance/immunity.

I think basically all the clouds are worth learning, as monsters that are immune/very resistant to fire, ice or poison all at once are rare fortunately.
And in crawl rare means that you'll probably encounter only those specific monsters once you will have learned all the clouds :D

Freezing cloud is basically useless against undead.
Poisonous cloud is basically useless against undead.
Conjure flame is basically awesome sauce against undead, and combines very nicely with force lance for monsters too smart to initially move onto flaming terrain.
Lightning bolt also kicks undead ass, but in a very hey, look at me, I am an attention whore sort of way.

Actually, beyond Lair and the Lair runes, the set of poison resistant monsters who are NOT also cold resistant is pretty tiny, and I will still have bolt of cold.
Plus, clouds may dissipate faster out of LoS, but already applied poison doesn´t - its the gift that keeps on giving.

Having said that, I am still reluctant to forget Freezing Cloud, because its basically my favourite level 6 attack spell.
Getting access to Ignite Poison would cost me 1500 gold and another 5 spell slots, hmm. Probably not worth it.

EDIT:

So I forgot FC, memorised CBlink, and went to Vaults 5, basically did what I said I would do: PShift, Haste, Crystal Ball, Down, CBlink, PCloud, PCloud, run, CBlink, run, rest. PCloud, PCloud, Crystal Ball, Bolt of Cold, Bolt of Cold, rest. Run to stairs via unused corridor, back up to V4 to chill. Stair danced a little bit (much less stuff in the danger zone), and currently the stair area is completely clear, so as an approach, this might work.

I had totally forgotten just how awesome CBlink is. I mean, I have semi controlled blink/ firestormed the Vaults welcoming part in the past, and it was good, but this is like, holy shit, if I die here I have only myself to blame.

I am going to bed now, to tackle V5 again another day.

Also: in combo with my nightstalker mut, Ash helped out massively - avoiding red } in favour of brown and white ones really made my crazy dashes past the corners a lot safer.

d - Enslavement           Hex            ######..     1%          4    ###....

I don't remember much about Red Sonja, so I decided to play it again. SpEn of Zin is probably the easiest combo for this map. I took the shortcut to the Orb. I spent about 20 minutes doing other stuff, so you can probably beat it within 30 minutes.

Edit: Gretell causes lua errors in loot-filled places. And Gozag, the gold god, kinda sucks.

Does anyone else feel like Lair is too long? I feel like its a big contributor to how boring that part of the game can get. I noticed they've been cutting some of the ridiculously long branches down a few levels, and I wouldn't mind Lair getting the same treatment down to 4 or 5.

Yes i agree that 8 levels of Lair feels a bit too long.
And alternative to cutting it would be to make the 4 first levels the actual lair, and make a new branch with different monsters for the next 4 to provide variety and lower the boredom of "8 levels looking the same"

Oh yea, if they make the lair shorter I would play this game again. It's sooo boring once you've done it 40 times.

Well, they're currently debating about shortening the Lair to 4 levels, and putting another branch somewhere (still not decided) to compensate the XP loss.
Developpers apparently agree about the "it's 8 levels of the same" feeling, especially since most of the monsters have basic AI there.

Another branch at the end of lair would be cool. Elephant animal graveyard etc? Somehow attracts dieing animals and then raises them as undead? Might be too easy for some characters though, like crypts light.

A branch filled only with holy creatures would be neat too but it would be hard to figure out why TSO or what-not wouldn't let you just waltz through if you worship good gods.

I'm a Gargoyle Berserker on D:4, and thanks to some good luck I have high piety. Trog just gifted me the 6/6 Dark Maul of Crushing. Is it as good as I think it is, or does the massive delay offset the ludicrous base damage?

EDIT: aaaaand immediately died. Son of a bitch.

Elephant graveyard

A branch filled entirely with packs of undead elephants sounds absolutely evil and unfair. In other words, it's perfect for Crawl.

Well, it's not THAT good anyway.
when you compare it to a Great Mace (the closest you can have on a Gargoyle), it is really slower, even if it has nearly double damage.
This means it is more efficient on very few targets, who have really high AC (because it decreases the damage by a number, not a percent), and with really high skill (to lower the weapon delay).

I think for the Trog folks, it can be an interesting weapon as Berserk gives you a haste to counterbalance that weapon being very slow.

But running out of Berserk , and so being affected by the Slow status may be a big problem if you do not have another weapon to switch and continue fighting, as you may become hit way too many times while you're trying to hit once with the dark maul.

Qazlal is really fun. Coats you in defenses, offensive invocations, randomly explodes everything around you, and gives you a nice summon ability. Probably one of the strongest sets of god powers. Unfortunately he also turns you into the Crawl equivalent of William Wallace, screaming at everything to come get you every turn. Probably should of assumed the god of storms would be a bad god for a stabber before worshipping him, but hey.

I just ended up accepting the yolo, picking up the Singing Sword and smashing everything until I entered a Bailey and the sound pulled too many orc knights for my poor halfling to handle.
