Sigmund never kills me because I respect the danger that he poses too much.  Its (almost) never the expected threats that kill you.

You misspelled seance.  Are possessing Draignean?  Are you actually a ghost in the shell? You have to tell us if you are, that's the rule

Sigmund is strong but he's squishier than you'd think. You can usually kill him if you can get close.

I think I have the most deaths against gnolls and their early high-damage polearms, but it's been a long while since I last died to them. I think either they have been nerfed or I've just got that much more experienced in this game.

Gnolls spawn too early for how hard they can be; you probably learned to avoid them on the early floors.

I once found a pack of gnolls in the first hallway out of the entrance vault, with only one entrance, and enough gnolls to block the hallway...

It was not a long-lived character :P

Things that I'm tired of getting killed by:
Poison on D:1-3
My own ghost on D:3
Purple-robed orcs smiting me
Green-robed orcs smiting me
My own ghost in random minibranches
Falling through three floors after starting with a promising character and getting killed
Underestimating the difficulty of a bailey or ice cave
My own ghost in the Lair or mid-dungeon
Sigmund/other named enemies at their shallowest possible depths
Hydras on D:6 when I have no flame-branded swords or skill with maces
My own ghost after getting teleported next to him with nowhere to run and no useful potions

Here's a little something about DCSS. Running is often a sound strategic choice. Of that list, 7 can be avoided by running (possibly as early as 'as soon as you see them'), then all but 1 of the rest can be partially alleviated by running at some point.

Yeah, I was gonna say, this:

I've learned to treat ghosts as out-of-depth monsters. Basically, I drink all my enhancement potions and hope I don't die. If I'm low on potions, I try to run.

should look more like this:

I've learned to treat ghosts as out-of-depth monsters. I try to run and hope I don't die.

My two Crawl mantras are thus: Cowards Win Crawl, and 100% Fights- that is, if your odds of winning a fight aren't 100%, don't get into the fight if at all possible. 99% might sound really good, but remember that you'll probably have your 100th engagement in, like, Lair, and you only need to lose once to lose forever. Enhancement potions are for bumping your 80% fights up to 100, not (just) for trying to turn a 40% into a 60%

Early deaths really depend a lot on what emergency items you have. Sigmund is harmless if you apply nets or a decent enhancement potion. Grinder is even less dangerous if you have a potion of lignification. Even the "useless" wands like confusion or flame can be good for taking down early threats. And if you do kill Sigmund on D:2 or something, then you'll have a huge level advantage and be less likely to die later. Ghosts usually aren't too bad, unless they're Draconian ghosts. Draconian ghosts have the draining attack, which deals absurd damage at range.

That said, hydras are often heavy bullshit. They've caused me quite a few deaths, more then any other individual enemy type does. They're the reason I don't play Trolls anymore[Claws 3 adding more heads is just rude].

Shafts are another matter. They're one of the few ways that the RNG can put you in a position where you're utterly helpless without you making any mistakes. Shadow traps used to be the same, but were removed.

Ghostbusting is a useful and important art in Crawl. Remember a ghost's weaknesses:

- Hexes/Banishment. Ghosts have low MR. An Enchanter or even a wand of confusion make short work of pre-Lair ghosts and Lugonu makes any ghost a breeze.
- Holy Wrath/Dispel Undead. Neither of those are really guaranteed early on, but can be quite helpful later in the game or if you follow Kiku.
- Stairs. Ghosts can't climb stairs. If a fight between you and a ghost is pretty even, just retreat up/down, heal up and then try again. Xom favours the determined.
- Ghosts lack some of the skills they had in life. In particular, several Necromancy and all Transmutation spells are forbidden to ghosts and they don't use other spells in a particularly intelligent manner[Although unlimited castings can make up for this in long engagements].
- Whatever race they were in life. A Deep Elf or Felid, for example, goes down very quickly indeed if pressed. More robust ghosts like Minotaurs or Draconians can be difficult without exploiting other weaknesses.
- Extreme violence. Very little is immune to extreme violence and ghosts are no exception. Most ghosts can't stand up to spamming your strongest spell or Might+Haste and bopping away in melee.

A dedicated ghostbuster character should ideally be either an Enchanter, Necromancer of Kiku or Abyssal Knight. Being undead yourself to avoid leaving yet more ghosts[Or being a Transmuter to neuter your ghosts' power] is optional, but can help. Not playing Draconians reduces the threat of ghosts by an order of magnitude, so consider doing that too.

Usually you can walk away from Sigmund under your own power.  Especially if you have stealth/a stairway is near.

Have you tried vampire, spriggan, or vine stalker assasins?

Vampire Assassins make me feel like I'm real bad at the game because I can just never get them to survive the lair.

I could probably do decently with a vamp assassin, but to be honest, I don't want to deal with juggling hunger states

hunger states on Vps is actually pretty simple. Pre-lair, sit at full and bottle the rest. Past the lair, sit at bloodless, bottle everything and quaff when you need to regen.

Ah, dammit! And this was my furthest run, too...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Got too caught up grinding back my stats after getting the golden rune. And thus, I witnessed a first hand account as to why doing this in Pandemonium is a very, very bad idea (read: got tagged by a nasty pan lord and an entourage of anti-undead/smiters/hellfire happy demons while I was warping around trying to find a safe spot). I shoulda just cleared the game without bothering with the golden rune (woulda been my first time beating the game, actually!), but, again, greed got the best of me.

From this run, I realized how much different the extended game is compared to early, mid, and even part of the late game. Extended feels very much like late game NetHack, where you're basically all but invincible so long as you don't get too arrogant. Oh well, it was fun.
