I just got this for 65 small coins.

I dont suggest ever trying to find all the coins in the game, they all have set places in the cities, but they're a bitch to find. It took me maybe three hours to find 65, and the game suggests there is atleast 85 to find (the next item up was 85, the highest cost).

The coins are easy to find, if you search while you're nearby them it says "You sense something nearby" and when you get very close it says "You something shining".

The best source of coins by far though is treasure maps, since each map gets you 2 - 4 small medals.  If you get your negotiation skill high enough you can buy these treasure maps at a quarter million each in Larna.  This requires about 75 negotiation skill though (and negotiation is much much harder to increase than it used to be).

Where is Larna?

Larna is the town that can be accessed through the mountain pass in the southeast corner of the map.  The monsters in the pass are pretty tough so it will be a while before you can get there.  The souvernir shop there sells valuable items, but at outrageous prices.  As far as I know this is the only place you can buy material kits and treasure maps.  She sells potions of potential too but they are not worth the money you have to pay for them.

Not so.  There's an even better source:  You'll occasionally find them, totally randomly, in the prize-balls you get from vending machines.  (This also means that unlimited small medals are available.)

Prize balls are a good source, but once you reach high levels of fame and income, buying treasure maps is definately a faster way to accumulate the small medals.  In a two week span of game time, if I apply myself I can make 1.5 million gold or more - enough to easily purchase six maps and average 18 coins.  Any treasure container (safes, treasure balls, chests, etc.) could contain a small medal, but the rate appears to be about 1/4.  Of course buying treasure maps doesn't mean you can't also be getting treasure balls from arena fights and looting dungeons.

Now the downside to treasure maps is that you need a very high negotiation skill to buy them at a reasonable price, and not everyone will have that (or the will to train the skill through use, which isn't so easy in 1.07).

So how exactly are you guys managing to get so powerful in this game?  I've never been very good at combat-based games.  I've put 18 hours and 43 minutes into this character (thank you character screen!) and I'm only level 11, with 18 skill in my main weapon (firearm).  I've spent a lot of my time doing missions to earn money and platinum coins for training, a little bit of time fighting in the arena and pet arena, and a lot of time fighting in dungeons to try to get stronger, but I still get killed in one hit by a lion.  What am I doing wrong?

Don't feel bad, I have 400 hours (some of that is idle time where the app was sitting on). It takes some serious time to build up your levels and skills.  A few tips are:

-Keep your level up points to distribute to your main combat skills
-Remember that your damage multiplier is based mostly on your stats
-Resists are king for survival in the mid-late game
-Status effect resists are important, particularly sleep and paralysis (because you can't heal them once you've gotten hit)
-DV is very important, it reduces the damage from attacks
-Speed is an extremely important stat.  Avoid anything that reduces it and embrace items that increase it.  Riding skill may help you here for a while because riding a mount boosts your speed significantly.  This will be useful up to the point that your mount dies like a dog to everything.

I just can't find out what "manuscripts" are there for. Apparently by reading them I'm able to "decode" those things, but I haven't noticed that making any difference. Is there some way to use them that I just haven't figured out so far?

Those are used to join the mage's guild and increase your mage guild rank.

Even if you have no intention of joining the mage's guild at any point, it may beworth saving them so that you can bequeath them to a future character when you mate with one of your pets.

Thanks a bunch. I am, in fact, currently playing a wizard so I might as well give the mages' guild a try.

Where can I find them?

Now this is why the japanese creep me out.

Haha, you can get married to anything and have babies, male or female.  I had a lesbian marriage with a Tyrannosaurus.

The mages guild is in Lumiest in the wizard shop.  Talk to the guard and he'll give you the quest to join.  You put the books in the delivery box and when you've accumulated 30 points you become a member.

1.08 is out. Guilds are translated, as well as some of the books and lots of subquests. Definitely worth upgrading.

NEVER do the quest given to you by the Red Bomber in Derphy, it costs you 12000 gold to get a bomb which you set off for a 100 Karma drop, and the quest reward is terrible.

Plus I should note that the bomb is extremely heavy. (About 120 weight.)

On the topic of heaviness. Where can I find a trainer for weightlifting?
