Experimentation I: The Ligneous Age Roll: 9
Historians usually separate the past into ages based on various milestones. For those that would study your people, this period marked the first time they left any real permanent indication of their existence for others to come across much, much later.
Building upon the knowledge they'd been gaining about their surroundings, your tribesfolk went from existing at the whims of nature to manipulating it to fit their needs
(Powder Miner +2I). They'd begun to use their crude stone tools to tear down entire trees to repurpose for their own protection. Specific tribespeople would "shape" the wood using their own crude stone tools to fit specific requirements, whether that be for the frame of a home, a sturdier axe, or a seat beside the fire. Your people went from living in easily moved tents to permanent residences. Taking influence from the many types of plants the tribe had become extremely familiar with, they decided to dig "roots" into the earth, digging pits out and using rough wooden posts to bear a flat roof of sticks covered in dried grasses torn up from around them and mud sourced from the nearest watering hole. These homes provide a good level of protection from the environment and allow for safe storage of Resources as well. Some house are, in fact, used entirely for storage, and may prove sufficient for other utilities in the future as a means to allow work away from the elements. Notably, these small, relatively permanent and secure homes helped set the foundations for the nuclear family structure relatively early in the tribe's existence.
Technology Discovered: Pit House (Requires 1 Wood Upkeep/Settlement) - Note: Upgrades that replace existing tech are rolled out across the entirety of your civilization at once. I
can replace this with a settlement-by-settlement basis for replacement in the future without issue as I have already worked on how both methods would work, so if the people want it, it's easy enough to swap. If I am to do so however, I'll request that you name not only your people, but the settlements as well in order to ease tracking upgrades across individual settlements. It's harder to mix up a name than grid coordinates, and please don't take that as a challenge.
While each piece was expertly hand-carved to fit into one another, the people sought out a means of ensuring the new structures were secure after a couple unfortunate accidents. Utilizing a plant largely ignored until now, your tribe began gathering
Reeds around the lake of
48-C to make
Primitive Rope which they used to bind each Pit House's frame. Besides being good for securing their new homes, this primitive rope improved the tribe's ability to haul wood, allowing a team to secure multiple logs and use lengths of rope to let multiple people haul it from either end. This has increased both the range at which your people could harvest trees as they can more easily distribute the weight in a manner that eases hauling over longer distances.
Reeds are a resource representing
Textiles, and can be used for anything made utilizing fibrous materials such as the
Rope, powdered wigs, parachutes, kevlar, or asbestos underwear.
Technology Discovered: Primitive Rope (Requires access to Textiles)Resource Discovered: TextilesBetter woodworking techniques as well as the invention of rope also improved the construction of stone tools available, allowing more work to be done and effectively doubling the gathering capabilities of the tribe with regards to
Wood and
Stone.
Technology Discovered: Improved Stone Tools (Requires access to Stone, Wood, and Textiles)This period also marks the first time any real "cultural" evolution took place.
Seedkeepers were already something of a renowned position within the tribe, and they'd begun to tell tales as they aged, passing them down from one generation to the next. These first folk tales equated periods of history in the tribe with various trees that were planted during those times. Every tree had a story, and so the tribe began to grow something resembling a level of respect for the offering of wood given to them by the trees, these reminders of their short history. Of course the accuracy of these tales, or even whether or not the tree was actually the one attributed to any specific story, was questionable at best, but it expressed your people's ability to reflect on their past and, maybe, learn from it.
One particular tree
was accurately identified and maintained by the tribe. A singular baobab standing near the tribe's settlement in
48-C was marked with crude tally marks carved into its bark. Each cut in the tree represented a tribesperson lost to the scourge of the lions over the years that the tribe lived in the region. It stood as a stark reminder of the dangers of the world in which your people lived. Each tribal that your people believed was stricken down by the maneaters had their remains presented in front of the tree for a Seedkeeper to record. These bodies were left at the base of the tree for scavengers to steal away with during the night, although your tribe was not aware of this and believed the remains were being accepted by the tree as an offering. This small ritual set the stage for proper funerary rites and the formation of spiritualism to be developed in the future.
Technology(?) Discovered: The BaobabThe lions, if left to their own devices, would prove to have a significant impact on the progress of the tribe, and could even lead to the forced abandonment of the settlement at
48-C down the line.
With the tribe's advancement into the
Ligneous Age, the three current Major Founders (
Taricus,
m1895, and
a1s) have received
1 Prestige. While one of the Minor Founders rose to prominence and shifted the lineup of the Major Founders (
a1s is replaced by
Powder Miner), this tumultuous early stage of civilization also saw one more Major Founder fall out of power willingly to be replaced by another Minor Founder (
Taricus is replaced by
NUKE9.13). This very rare occurrence took place likely to benefit the health and sustainability of the tribe and should not be expected to occur again throughout the civilization's history without sufficient reason to upset the status quo.
It is now the
Exploration Phase. You may choose a new region to scout out in order to better identify the terrain as well as reveal the resources it has (or perhaps where certain dangers reside), or you may propose something that would increase your tribe's explorative potential. As always, you can ask me about whether or not a proposal is valid, clarification on things, and other questions related to the game either here or in the discord server linked in the OP.
And stop getting high rolls. It's skewing what you people should expect from results. So inconsiderate.
Improved Stone Tools: Provides durable tools for basic tasks, doubling Wood and Stone Exploitation, requires access to Stone, Wood, Textile.
-Stone Spear: Allows Exploitation of larger beasts for Food, requires access to Stone.
Primitive Rope: Dried, braided reeds that let the tribe secure and bundle objects. Allows for Wood Exploitation 1 square outside of the civilization's borders, requires access to Textiles.
Primitive Firemaking: A base tech vital for survival.
Persistence Hunting: Allows for Food Exploitation 1 square outside of the civilization's borders.
Subsistence Foraging: Allows for the bare minimum of passive Food collection for low populations in plentiful regions.
-Societal Herbalism: Your people as a whole have a basic familiarity with how to utilize the plant life around them. They are beginning to understand the life cycle of plants.
--Guarri Bark Paste: A bark and water mash that can be spread over open injuries to provide a level of pain relief and infection resistance.
-Primitive Dendrology: The tribe can identify the useful parts of trees better, providing Food or Chemicals in addition to Wood.
--Seedkeepers: Tribal collectors of seeds who spread them as they travel. They also keep track of tribal folklore using local trees as reference points for certain events.
Hide Tents: Provides basic shelter.
-Pit House: A semiburied wood and grass structure that provides good environmental protection, improves quality of life, and sets the stage for further enhancements to bolster a more sedentary lifestyle, requires 1 Wood per Settlement.
The Baobab: A tree used to mark tribal deaths due to lions. The deceased are left as offerings at its base. Is not a health hazard thanks to local scavengers stealing away with corpses in the night.
