Expansion I: New Grounds
Your people have been nomadic throughout the entirety of their existence, so when a portion of the tribe kept moving onward when the rest settled it was understandable. This second group followed a Minor Founder
(Nuke9.13 +1I) into 48-C with the migration of an antelope herd. These animals knew the land well and wound up leading the tribe to lush, fertile lands with plenty of tubers and fruits to forage for thanks to a wide flowing stream and expansive lake recently swollen by rains. While there wasn't much in the way of aquatic life, plenty of land animals frequented the area - most regularly were the antelope and elephant herds. There were portions of the lake's shore that they'd actively avoid thanks to the presence of a very wet material they'd get stuck in largely ignored by your tribe - clay.
Tribe Settled In 48-CResources Identified:Lakeside Red Clay Deposit (Clay)Antelope Herd (Food)Elephant Herd (Food+Ivory)This region proved significantly friendlier to life in general, and it wasn't very long before word got back to the original settlement. A regular migration of the tribe developed between these two locations, with small numbers of permanent settlers at each. This migration was dictated by the seasons, with the wet season's rains making 48-C quite desirable while the dry season often saw the stream reduced to a trickle and the lake's water level dropping precipitously in kind. The wildlife was
much less keen on coming around during these periods, but the reduced tribal population was able to subsist on what they could forage. Without any real landmarks, no fumic geysers, and no way of clearly marking the path between tribal settlements (a few sticks jammed into the ground often didn't stay standing for long), migrations could occasionally take a bit longer than expected, with some small groups losing their way entirely.
Technology Discovered: Subsistence ForagingWhile your people could easily thrive in this region, they are far from alone. Herds of animals gathering in one location will draw the eye of many a predator, and in this case said predator has turned out to be a particularly aggressive pride of lions. Your people do not know where they're coming from beyond somewhere eastish, but can clearly identify where they've been. Very little remains of the tribesfolk they pick off at the periphery of the settlement, and anyone who vanishes is just assumed to have been consumed by these large felines. The attacks are frequent enough that your people have had to arm themselves with spears almost entirely, and will have to do so until the lion's den is located and dealt with in some fashion or else be wiped out in the area.
Upkeep Required in 48-C (Lion Attacks - Stone)With the settlement of
48-C, your tribe has identified more of the surrounding area:
47-B: Savannah, Freshwater Spring, Freshwater Stream, Beach, Coast, Shallow Water
48-B: Savannah, Beach, Coast, Shallow Water
49-B: Shallow Water
49-C: Savannah, Plateaus, Beach, Coast, Shallow Water
49-D: Savannah, Beach, Coast, Shallow Water
With no name of your peoples decided yet, you may continue to debate and discuss your options (or propose new ones). I'll leave it open until the end of the turn (that is, you need your vote in for it during the Experimentation Phase).
It is now the Exploitation Phase. You may choose to begin exploitation of any identified resource within your controlled territory that you have the technology to utilize. To make them easier to identify, Resources marked in red are available to you but are not something you currently have any knowledge to utilize. Using the clay as an example, I'll quickly illustrate a couple ways you could change that. You might:
-Invent clayworking, which could be done in either the Exploitation or Experimentation Phases with varying degrees of impact. While a proposal in Exploitation might seem like a stretch, Primitive Firemaking
could be considered a related tech. This opens up clay for utilization in many ways in the future, but can take more actions overall to set up something specific such as pottery (exploit clay, experiment clayworking, exploit pottery or exploit clayworking, experiment pottery, exploit clay). Taking steps to build foundational technologies will vastly improve the impact subsequent technologies have.
-Invent Pottery or some other clay-related product. Without a general tech such as clayworking to base off of, primitive firemaking is a step too far removed from the process. This would require Pottery be proposed in the Experimentation Phase. It would
also "unlock" clayworking, and while it might be the most action efficient option (exploit clay, experiment pottery & unlock clayworking) the lack of an intermediary step could see the efficacy of the knowledge as a whole take a hit.
You have also encountered your first Enemy. Sometimes you'll come across problems that need a-fixing. These Lions represent a tutorial of sorts for engaging in combat. Currently the location of their "base" is unknown, which will require Exploration in the right region to identify. You may seek to use an Expansion action to more directly confront and kill the lions once you know where to go, however there may be other means of appeasing/circumventing/bypassing the issue via actions in other phases. While I don't necessarily recommend it, one such option would be to Experiment Animal Husbandry then try to Exploit Lion Domestication. At the risk of giving you all a terrible idea to jump on, this is a solid example of how to deal with a conflict by means other than military. In the future, when dealing with other humans, you could also attempt to engage them in diplomacy via actions such as proposing treaties in the appropriate phase depending on what the treaty regards.
Finally, you may note that you have access to a Resource that actually provides two resources - the Elephant Herd. Sometimes you'll get lucky enough to get your eyes on a "double" resource. That's all it is, luck. Same with the identification of a new technology. Sometimes your people just naturally grow. It is, however, much more efficient if you have a direct hand in it.
Remember, if you have any questions at all, feel free to ask. You can do so here or in the discord server linked in the OP, where there is a text channel specifically for questions about the game.
