Adding onto Tegga's note--you do not want to catch yourself being surrounded in at least 6 tiles of an azure/death jelly, or one of the worse creatures in the Abyss--for a 3rd rune anyway (unsure as to your context of your character though). Because it's the familiarity of confidence that gets you, until you're nearly dying or spending too much on maintenance (potions, heals, etc).

Although I'm just posting here right out of context due to busyness x_x

Note to self:

If you accidentally enter a zig on U2 (I thought it was a trove, don't ask), and the first two floors had panlords, maybe the third floor will also have panlords, and they might kick your ass - just get out for Trog's sake.

Agree that at this stage, not wearing hat of alch was reasonable, and I see you just picked up this ring, but you nonetheless died to a blast of cold, with no rC, whilst carrying an unidentified source of quick-swappable rC and a rem curse scroll. Not to mention your awesome stack of blinking scrolls :)

That vault sounds sucky though. TBH, pre lair branches, I often try to avoid obvious vaults in D12-D15, they can be pretty hardcore.

The reason I didn't put the ring on was that it was a randart, meaning it could have contam, draining, etc, and I figured I'd just wait until I found an ID scroll.  I had just changed into that FDA, (FDS now I guess...) I also had literally just picked up that hat of the alch, although I wasn't planning to wear it anytime soon.

But what killed this character wasn't really the ice dragon, or even that insane vault.  What killed him was the painful grind that was the entire game up to that point.  To be honest, I think I was at a turning point there, and had I not tilted against that ice dragon I think things were about to really improve for that character, as I was finally sort of caught up on the power curve.  But when every single fight is difficult and you have to use emergency resources to save yourself constantly it does wear on you.

Too bad though, it was a streak breaker.  I don't think I have the right mindset to be able to get long streaks, my brain just gets lazy sometimes...

Abyss isn't too bad with the right resistances (basically rN+/++), lots of sources of teleportation, and generally good stats. I've been banished and snagged the Abyss rune at XL 14-15 as my first rune. However, because of the risk associated with that I usually wait until after Vault:5, especially if I'm switch to TSO and need piety.

On the other hand, Slime is always one of my later runes (often post-tomb) because it requires lots of resistances (rCorr, rC++, possibly rF++ if you decide to use scrolls of immolation) and benefits from several buffs (speed, might, agility, whatever divine buffs you can get for melee). I usually don't have everything I need until later in the game.

How did you not have any ID scrolls? I'm usually swimming in the damn things. Enough to use them on bardings I pick up as non taur/naga characters, purely because I'm curious.

Did a trove ask for a shitload of them or something?

Nope.  Like I said, the RNG was extremely unkind to me in this game.  Did I mention the 3 75% success banishes I tried on that ice dragon that failed? (About a 1.5% chance to miss 3 75% chances in a row, it was just a continuation of my terrible luck.)

I'd say go to snake and just take it slow, don't hang around those poison aura guys, quaff curing when poison gets bad, etc.

You could go right to shoals but honestly I'd rather start with snake with no rpois myself.

Well the RNG felt bad about treating my poor little HoAk so poorly, so it's making up for it this time.

Halfling Skald, I expected a weak combo but... I don't know why, but I am cutting through everything like a hot knife through butter...

I came here to ask for advice regarding body armor.  Due to an early summoned Nexoquac (spelled wrong for sure) I got a couple bad muts.  I had 5 cure mut potions, so I figured I'd play mutation roulette!  Quaffed 4 mutation potions, had a few bad ones, quaffed cure mut and ended up with relec and wild magic.  Good enough!

But now I would like to get regen and spectral weapon usable.  I feel it's probably wise to swap out of the plate mail I'm wearing.  There's FDA available, and I have an rC buckler. Or, I could use an rF scale mail.

There's also some IDA available, but I really prefer rF to rC, even if it does come with 1 extra AC.

BUT this time I've got no heal potions or movement things. :-[

That said, I remember Hepl having a 'weapon choice' for the Knight--I don't see it other than having a broad axe of flame at XL 15, and further on it gets a speed ego with a reflection shield. Said knight however, is ded in this scenario. I:

To my great shame and embarrassment, it's overconfidence (and that I had, like, 50~hp and chose to smack it and it hit me down to that :V I forgot how life is with lower AC, despite having experience with it before).

Well my poor little HaSk didn't survive his entrance into Zot.  I mean... damn that entry vault was ridiculous.

Moths of wrath, tentacled monstrosities, golden dragons, death cobs, and lots of draconians.  Basically come down the stairs, get grabbed by tentacles, get slowed by death cobs, get beat up by berserk draconians, and get pushed off the stairs by berserk golden dragons.

It doesn't exactly seem fair.  But of course, you can teleport in that situation!

Only now teleports in zot take like 25 turns...

Seriously, this was ridiculous.  Really good character up to that point destroyed by a cheap ass entry vault.  Maybe it was reasonable when you could teleport and blink normally in zot.

Make a new formicid, and everything goes fine. Then I get shafted for 2 floors--ok that's normal, happens about every 2 games or so.
Then I meet Rupert, OK he's a bit faster than me, throwing nets away! Then I run around trying to find an upstairs, since digging takes too long (and I really want banners so no using scrolls or potions >_>).

Then I open a door...
All the walls! :'(

So, the old promising character died (of course.) Protip: if you've been building your character around monsters taking major damage from your spines, going into a branch where everything wields spears is bad.

So my new guy prays at an unknown altar (because that's just how I roll), and gets Ru (I'll get Jivya one of these days.) Fine. First pick comes up: -Mr, can't read scrolls, or lose a hand. I pick -Mr, because the other two sound horrible. So what do I run into? Sigmond, who immediately casts confuse on me; and a player ghost of a SpEn, who also immediately casts confuse on me. Arg!
