Yeah, but most charity/philanthropy efforts are trickling relatively small amounts of personal wealth or setting up institutions or foundations.  Lucas is the only guy I've ever seen just dump a massive amount of his own money into a cause at once - $4 billion - and in my opinion, that's how it should be done.

He's hardly the only one.  Look at Bill Gates/Warren Buffet.

Yeah?  And they're still the two richest people on the planet and growing.  Relative to the amount of wealth they have, their trickling out to charities over the years doesn't seem nearly as substantial.

Percentage-wise Gates still gives a lot; nearly 50% of what he makes last I heard. Granted most of his money is disposible income, but do any of you give half of your disposible income to charity?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I think it started with a discussion of George Lucas' donations to charities

It did. George Lucas isn't Star Wars no more, for better or worse.

Well, he is kind of history of the Star Wars. You know, he kinda had a big impact on the original trilogy and... basically whole Star Wars up to now?

Well obviously. But I'm not sure his charitable donations had much of an influence on the development of the series.

I'm not going to read the thread just yet, but as someone who hasn't seen the movie yet, just from the casual mentions and visuals I keep seeing while trying to avoid spoilers...my impression is one of:

A) Luke is now a girl, Han Solo is a black guy, and Harrison Ford has been cast in some role because why not. And Darth Vader appears to have a clueless sidekick.

B) This movie is not a remake of episode IV as I'd thought, but takes place many years after the end of the empire. Luke is training some girl to be a jedi, and wookies don't age. And no indication of any familiar post-Imperial era EU material. No Thrawn, no Mara Jade, no C'Baoth, no Leia as a jedi, etc. Just some Sith I don't recognize who is constantly portrayed as being an idiot.

C) I suppose it's possible the girl I keep seeing is Mara Jade. But I don't think so.

I'm leaning towards interpretation A. I'll check back in after I've seen it.

The only things you got really right are that it's not a remake, and there's not much EU material (there are a bunch of homages, but I won't spoil them for you).  The movie is pretty good, just go see it!

I think Lucas is probably thrown for a loop because he thought that when he gave Disney star wars he was giving them something special.  Disney did not treat it like something special.

Yeah.

It's also worth mentioning that in addition to getting rid of the Expanded Universe, Disney apparently de-canonized some of Lucas' word-of-god on the setting, and they completely ignored all his notes on sequel ideas that he handed over to them as part of their agreement.

Nobody knows what Lucas' ideas actually wee, so it could have been for better or for worse.

Reading your speculations made me remember a hilarious Scenes From A Multiverse strip where the author speculated about possible plot points of the movie:

Y'know what they need to do in the next movie? Bring back the 'TRAITOR' guy. You know who I'm talking about, the Stormtrooper with the spinny thing. I know he was killed, but in retrospect he was the best thing about that movie.

Yeah, he should totally make a return. Maybe as a Knight Of Ren because, I dunno, they found him half-dead on that planet and decided he was too badass to die and fixed him up with electronics so now he could be basically Black (hue, not in THAT sense) Stormtrooper fighting with a shock club or whatever because apparently all Knights Of Ren have unique weapons. I don't know, just bring him back. He needs to live. He's the new Bobba Fett.
Also, he would proably be better than Phasma, considering as she literally fails at being noticeable for now.

When it comes to character/planet names, Lucas is to writing what Todd McFarlane is to comic book art (and writing).

I feel a little sorry for him. Lucas clearly doesn't understand how symbolism, naming conventions or human communication works. It's a typical teen nerd problem. He's just not self-aware enough to compensate or understand why people are so baffled and upset by it, unlike most nerds who got past their early 20s.
I think he's more of a "slightly out of touch artist" archetype than a nerd.
