What would be the equivalent metaphor for the prequel trilogy? Forcing one's children onto Dr. Phil for profit?

Maybe, putting a kid up in a home made ballon in an attempt to get a reality TV show?

Haven't you seen George Lucas's general contributions to past Star Wars stuff? He's a control freak of massive proportions and just insane about stuff he doesn't like. Revan and Bane were going to appear as force ghosts in Clone Wars; Lucas said "No, we can't have that". Yoda goes to Korriban in Clone Wars, but Lucas was like "I like the name Moriband better" and they had to basically figure out why the hell it'd change to Moriband over the few thousand years.

And don't even get me started on what he's done to the video games!

When it comes to character/planet names, Lucas is to writing what Todd McFarlane is to comic book art (and writing).

I feel a little sorry for him. Lucas clearly doesn't understand how symbolism, naming conventions or human communication works. It's a typical teen nerd problem. He's just not self-aware enough to compensate or understand why people are so baffled and upset by it, unlike most nerds who got past their early 20s.

So apparently Lucas is now giving his opinion on the new movie, and has said that selling the rights to Disney was like "selling his kids to white slavers".

So my takeaway from that is that George Lucas would sell his kids to white slavers for $4 billion. Because it's not like they held a gun to this head, and he sure didn't haven't any complaints when he was counting those greenbacks.

Weeeelll - I think he's genuinely hurt and upset and not realizing how other people are going to interpret what he says, because he clearly has no clue how typical people communicate.  So I can give him a pass on a horribly inappropriate metaphor. He's not the only one who's said really stupid, over-dramatic stuff in public.

He definitely gets epic nerd rage over his pet peeves and focuses on the parts he cares about, not the really important parts. In a lot of ways he's an anti-social geek who never really learned what he was doing wrong, so he's baffled and hurt when other people don't understand or agree with him.

It's a stupid, childish way to be.  But I feel more pity than anger over it. He's got problems and won't admit it.  Everything he dislikes about what happened with Star Wars comes back to decisions he made, and he can't let himself see that.

I can't dislike the guy though.  He's the only filthy rich billionare I've ever known to actually do charity right.  Gave a huge chunk of his net worth to education in one shot.

I think Lucas is probably thrown for a loop because he thought that when he gave Disney star wars he was giving them something special.  Disney did not treat it like something special.

Hm?  Donating to education is hardly new.  Look at the origins of most american universities that aren't state schools.

EDIT: Oh my god I love Snoke. Kylo Ren showing abilities introduced in Knights of the Old Republic and not seen much otherwise (stasis, mind domination) and Snoke being his teacher plus Snoke's appearance suggests that he's old as fuck. Maybe older than the Rule of Two; in legends, Bane based the rule of two on Revan. And Snoke is certainly no sith
Snoke's Plagueis. I bet you a beer.
I was thinking this throughout the entire movie.

I'm not going to read the thread just yet, but as someone who hasn't seen the movie yet, just from the casual mentions and visuals I keep seeing while trying to avoid spoilers...my impression is one of:

A) Luke is now a girl, Han Solo is a black guy, and Harrison Ford has been cast in some role because why not. And Darth Vader appears to have a clueless sidekick.

B) This movie is not a remake of episode IV as I'd thought, but takes place many years after the end of the empire. Luke is training some girl to be a jedi, and wookies don't age. And no indication of any familiar post-Imperial era EU material. No Thrawn, no Mara Jade, no C'Baoth, no Leia as a jedi, etc. Just some Sith I don't recognize who is constantly portrayed as being an idiot.

C) I suppose it's possible the girl I keep seeing is Mara Jade. But I don't think so.

I'm leaning towards interpretation A. I'll check back in after I've seen it.

Yeah, but most charity/philanthropy efforts are trickling relatively small amounts of personal wealth or setting up institutions or foundations.  Lucas is the only guy I've ever seen just dump a massive amount of his own money into a cause at once - $4 billion - and in my opinion, that's how it should be done.

He's hardly the only one.  Look at Bill Gates/Warren Buffet.

Yeah?  And they're still the two richest people on the planet and growing.  Relative to the amount of wealth they have, their trickling out to charities over the years doesn't seem nearly as substantial.  I've always thought the idea of charity as it's normally practiced is horribly flawed, because the nature of the super wealthy is they're in that position because they own and control the essentials that everyone else must pay them for, which means that the money they give away just cycles right back through them.  If someone like that isn't giving away nearly as much as they're making, then their net influence isn't giving at all.  And I know that they intend for their fortunes to be given away when they die, but that doesn't really do anything for the problems they're causing right now by amassing so much.  The problem with inequality isn't a lack of foundations addressing whatever issues.  It's that a majority of the population can't pay for shit because a minority controls all the money.  If the super wealthy want to address inequality, they need to do it by actually reducing inequality by reducing their own wealth.

But checking back into the story now, it looks like George Lucas is being wishy-washy about how he's going to go about doing this, so I have to rescind some of this praise.  When the story first broke, the media wrote like he was just getting rid of $4 billion out of his pocket (I thought it was first reported that he was giving it directly to the department of education), and I didn't bother to follow it through.
