We're not in the trenches now, I'm afraid.

As for leaving the radio out, It would be because as-is, it needs an operator, and making a fast plane really wants it to be single-seater.

The one issue with our tanks is the inaccurate cannon on them. If we're able to revise the cannon to be more accurate, we'd have less of an issue, doubly so if it has AP shells.

Radio is not a trench-only technology. It's not like everyone stopped using it after the first world war.

If we're going to go for an aluminium design we might as well go all out and make it entirely from aluminium to avoid the weakness to enemy incendiary rounds. It's only two ore for an all aluminium and we have two ore, so it should be totally possible to design one that isn't even Expensive so we can mass produce it.
Everything has a base cost of at least 1 ore, and unless the enemy is marching down the streets of your capitol you'll always have that 1 ore, since this isn't a game where bows and arrows are really relevant. Anyway, in practice this means a vehicle built wholly of aluminum has at least an ore cost of 3.

Model 1B Wasp: A biplane constructed of a slim, primarily aluminium frame, with pretty conventional ailerons, elevators and rudder.  The radio has been removed, but there is a space for a sufficiently small one to be 'slotted in' if needed.  It sports the ten-cylinder kerosene engine from the Hornet, with its lighter weight and materials allowing that engine to give it a faster top speed and acceleration.  There are dual Brumbies beneath the wings for forward fire, with a third rotating Brumby in the gunner's seat (to aim everywhere else).  Aiming for a cost of 2 ore, 2 oil.

Revision.  Aim was Partial aluminium, so still vulnerable to incendiaries but has the weight benefits to speed and manoeuvrability.

Eh, I'd say go with the monoplane. We'll be able to plain outrun them and thus be the ones choosing the aerial engagements.

I s'pose it's something we're going to have to get Sensei's input on. (Can we design something with a theoretical part, then just not include the part in manufacturing?)

I still think a revised radio is a good idea though. Once it is actually useable, we'll seize back the initiative (on the ground at least). Our forces will know about enemy movements the moment someone spots it, and will be able to instantly react. We'll also be able to proact much more efficiently too.

Yeah, we need to start either developing better armour, or AP rounds for the 60 cal. And I'm leaning on the armour at this point.

I will say that we do need the M3, even if it's just for aeronautical experience.

Competing design!

Model 11 Dragonfly: A Biplane constructed of a mostly plywood body, with the more important struts and active surfaces reinforced by Aluminium. There will be no radio, but provision for a small one to be slotted-in in the future if the technology is perfected. It uses a 10-cylinder engine from the Hornet. Its main weapon is a pair of Brumbies fitted just under the wing, for a firing time of 20 seconds, and a modified stallion which goes directly through the engine transaxle (alternatively, controlled by an interrupter gear if this can be made less complicated). Ditch the second operator and make it a pilot-only craft (though just like every other plane there can be a night fighter/trainer version for two men). Being non-complex and costing at most 2 ore 2 oil is a definite must, and if possible (i.e. RNG gods are kind enough) we should introduce leading-edge slats to make it maneuverable.

All the techs, I believe, are there before 1920. Not to mention the wasp name is more proper for monoplanes.
