Max difficulty actually makes the game easier, until they fix the crap taming effectiveness system i suggest going with 2.0 as a good balance of hard wild dinos without letting people go nuts with tames and completely nullify everything else in the game.

I agree with Matt.  Taming effectiveness will let people have level 200+ dinos that just make 90% of the game moot if there to many high level wilds around.

Actually for awhile now raptors could hardly even touch players.  Before the last patch I could stand still with 3 raptors and they would do no damage to me for minutes.

So I've been playing for a while in singleplayer, and it seems that my graphics card doesn't properly handle the game or something. LoD is all over the place (for instance: Thatch walls gain and loose detail while I'm staring at them directly from like half a meter away), the glare is completely ridiculous and even though I set the "Camera Shake Scale" parameter all the way to the left I still get motion sickness. If there is a fix for one of these issues, I'd be a lot happier with the game :/

I'll say it again- I rent a dedicated server with priority CPU and 40 slots. I'll need to reactivate it, but I will gladly, and don't mind footing the expense myself. Just, you know, tell me you are interested before I go through those hoops. I've hosted servers before, only for five other B12ers to create their own, and divide the playerbase until it's empty within a week.
So... any information on this at all yet?

Yeah, I was wondering about that as well, the thread fell silent so abruptly.

...OK, given the lack of anything, I am once again putting up my offer to back a server if someone wants to set one up for this.

Eh, I've kinda given up on a B12 server and am now playing on EU Official 226. Most people there are pretty friendly even though PvP is enabled and (except for the beaches) there's still a lot of space to build. Most drop locations seem to not be fenced off, but I heard mention of turrets in the volcano.

So yeah, come join me if you want.

With the new decay even older servers can feel pretty fresh.

Alright, the server is in the works. Just need to clean-up .ini file when I make it home, and we should be up and running later today.

Based on what I've read here, a reasonable compromise of what we want could be...

- Double length days, normal length nights
- Map self-position revealed
- x2 Taming speed
- x2-3 Resource gathering
- Medium-high difficulty

Does this sound good to you?If so, would anyone like to suggest certain server rules? For instance, "Don't build in caves," "no offline raiding," etc. These would be the law of the land, and players who deliberately breach them would be banned. Or, perhaps you'd prefer no rules at all..?

Also, I have a little proposition. In addition to whatever is agreed upon for the above, would be willing to raise experience gain to something ludicrous like x5, if folks were willing to make this hardcore server. I personally can't stand softcore, as the lack of substantial risk on well-populated/targetted servers allows those who have established themselves and those who are just out to grief to do whatever they please with only trivial risk and recovery time. Nothing says "Stop screwing with me" quite like a shot to the head of that level 70 who spent two weeks getting where he is while he's mining. What's more, this usually creates interest in trading, whether because you want to stockpile extra tools and supplies in case the worst comes to pass, or because you'd rather not risk your life to do what you can pay someone else to do for you.

Again, this is just a proposal. Unless I see substantial interest on this thread, we'll just roll with softcore.

When the server goes up, I would be interested in establishing a classic Bay12 settlement like in the good old days Bottlenecked. When I'm not gathering like a fiend or building bridges and rest camps in scenic locales, I tend to fit the ranger role- hunting, scouting, taming, and taking lots of utility and aesthetic engrams (flares, traps goddamned real roofs), rather than armor and tools.

The main things I'd say:

1. Definitely no offline raiding. That's the most boring anti-fun shit there is.
2. Agreed on no building in the land caves, but the ocean ones I don't mind, partially because there are so many and partially because they're not essential to access.
3. Even at 5x exp I'd not want to play Hardcore. It takes too damn long to level up even with increased exp gain just to lose it all because you lagged off a cliff or accidentally ran out of stamina while crossing a river.

EDIT: Oh yes, and I think building in caves should be allowed, but have a rule of no blocking them (whether that's by sticking a dino in front, building a wall or coating the entrance in plant species X/turrets)

The main things I'd say:

1. Definitely no offline raiding. That's the most boring anti-fun shit there is.
2. Agreed on no building in the land caves, but the ocean ones I don't mind, partially because there are so many and partially because they're not essential to access.

The problem is, allegedly, that building inside caves cancels the drops inside (not artifact spawns), meaning that folks won't be able to get super-special nifty gear all because someone decided to build a flight of stairs.

As for cave-camping- rest assured, if someone tries to blockade an entrance, it's getting admin-nuked. We'll do a two-strike warning for offline base-raiding depending on the situation. As always, though, you're going to want to prepare your base for all contingencies. Matters of diplomacy and territory will be left up the players- people are welcomed to cooperate and share resources freely, or walk around with a chip on their shoulder and shout "Get off my lawn" so long as they accept the consequences. Either way, beyond the agreed upon basics, admin won't be telling you how to play.

EDIT2: Sorry if I come across as impatient, but how's the server coming along?

Renewal has been in the works as of about 8 hours ago.. Bluefang Solutions is usually very prompt about these things, so I'll reckon we can look forward to seeing everything and running late tonight/earlier tomorrow morning.

Yeah, it's like... I don't particularly like the shoot-on-sight mentality because of how it tends to propagate itself until the whole server does it because it's too risky not to, but I've played my share of DayZ &c. so I'm used to it. What gets my goat is stuff like people with Rexes smashing thatch huts and killing the sleeping newbies inside for lulz, or deliberately waiting until someone goes offline to kill their dinos and blast into their supply rooms because you're scared of fighting or sieging them.

That's actually a really, really big thing in ARK because of how long it takes to tame: intentionally and repeatedly killing dinos while they're parked in a base on passive, especially when the owner is offline, is one of the few things that'd make me dedicate my time and resources to driving someone off the server in frustration.

Alright, folks, the server is up. Just search "Butosus," and you'll know the one. I've subscribed for quarterly payments (meaning we're golden for the next three months without fail), and opted in for the priority CPU feature, meaning that ours should blow official server performance out of the water. The current player cap is set at 40, but if we somehow manage to average even half of that, I will raise the cap 10, and so on.

Tell me if you have any problems connecting- I certainly am, but for my part, that's just business as usual.

It's not showing up for me either on the ingame browser or the server list on Steam. Unless that's supposed to be a joke and the name is actually something else. :/

Sorry, the keyword should have worked for the Unofficial filter in Ark, but we all know how buggy that is. Try " [Butosus]- Bay12 " on the steam servers. I'm looking at it right now.

Is there any possibility of adding better farming speed? :P

Nothing that I am aware of, short of some technical modding. If there is some a layman like myself can do, bring it to my attention, and I'll look into it.
