On a related note, I found out my miner in my fledgeling fort is far, far too weak to mine well, so I've temporarily assigned my HULKING PILE OF MUSCLE woodcutter as a miner to get the first few rooms done in a reasonable time. Even unskilled she can match pace with the competent and very weak miner.
holy shit. The strength of the miner actually effects the speed of their mining? Wow. I never knew that. I had a tendency to occasionally make the weakest dwarves of the starting seven be miners because of sadistic schadenfruede because I found it funny.
Mining makes dwarves stronger over time I think, but until they start making them gains they mine about as quickly as an accident lawyer gives up.

I got bored and tropped down all above ground trees.
Dorf don't like trees. Let's grow a mushroom forest in the basement.

My magma crabs are breeding!

Released some magma crabs for fun.
Some soldiers got hit by magma and had some badly bleeding wounds, oops!
There's also a !!xwar dog corpsex!! and a wild fire.

The pet owner was outraged!

OH NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
The expedition leader bled to death.

There's a fire so my dorfs can't bury him yet. Maybe I can make a slab first.

I managed to cage trap 1/4 of the map edge, which paid off because I just caught a breeding pair of buzzards! I'd better finish that Eyrie quickly so their kids have someplace to live.

That was quick.

I also caught a second pair of buzzards as well as some blind cave ogres and hungry heads, both of which are untrainable and useless.

EDIT: So waaaay back when I caught all those crundles, I also caught a male voracious cave crawler. Just now, I caught a female. Woo!

EDIT2: One of my several legendary weavers just got a strange mood to become a legendary weaver. Still cool, though.

Praise Armok, all those cagetraps really paid off:

This little one looks so adorable :-*

Sadly i just lost one of my expert animal trainers to a cave spider. Quite a heavy loss...
But so far my fort is doing pretty good. I got breeding pairs of mandrills, crundles ( :-X), rutherers, giant olms, cave crocodiles, rhinoceroses, elephants, giant cave spiders and jabberers.
Next aim: getting gremlins. Any tips?

Corpses = bones = crafts = improved goods = money

The problem is i'm swimming in valuable goods, it even lowers my fps. Gotta atomsmash all the crap and corpses and butcher more of my lovely animals. :(

What happened?

I keep cleaning the caverns for more dangerous animals to come in.
And "besorgter" means caring/worried.

I caught a few more buzzards, plus a male giant sparrow! Yay, I can finally have stray war giant sparrows (Tame)!

EDIT: AAAAAARGH! Why won't any of my nine animal trainers do their jobs until the last fucking minute! Do I have to put semi-wilds in a separate enclosure?! The female giant sparrow just went wild right as she was being trained and attacked her trainer! This isn't even the first time this has happened! I lost three buzzards to this stupid shit!

EDIT2: I got a serious goblin siege this time... right outside my cage traps. GG, dumbasses. Luckily, they landed right at the edge, so maybe some of them will get through.

Hehe, hope your fort survived. May i ask in which biome you are?
I'm getting sick of these giant lorikeets sitting in the trees for several years now, preventing other animals to spawn.

OH BOY
OH BOY DID I SURE LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES TODAY

So I got a total of to goblin squads and a troll squad. I captured about half of them, causing the troll squad to flee. A bunch of goblins chased after a dog, making their way around the traps. I sent my five-man, legendary +5, superdwarven military after them.

I didn't know just how badly cave adaption affects combat until now. I lost two macelords to the stupid goblins. I also lost around 5 civilians, but whatever. The captives will be made to suffer.

Then the dwarven and impish caravans came at the same time, so I got the depot ready for them. My legendary broker/mayor (he's the only one in the fort with above dabbling social skills) was on break, so I made some peasant the broker.

THEN A FUCKING FB ARRIVED, so I tried to close the cavern gates but my dwarves were too busy hauling goods to the depot to pull the lever and save their sorry asses. The FB, a bug of some kind with solid secretions, killed my only metalsmith and her baby, then was one-shotted by a passing engraver. Pitiful. I designated a new metalsmith and traded with the merchants. I don't think the secretions got anywhere, but I'll hold off on using DFhack's clean command for a few months.

After the merchants departed, I moved the depot to an underground area. I also made it out of solid platinum this time because I'm richer than Bill Gates. I also moved the barracks to the second-to-the-top level of the Eyrie so they would be out in the sunlight a lot. The Eyrie is completely finished except the final roof and the nest boxes. Hopefully I will have buzzards and giant sparrows soon.

Hehe, hope your fort survived. May i ask in which biome you are?

Yeah, my fort survived. I can just shut the gates at any time and nobody can get in.

I built my fort in a savage sand desert, although after the saplings grew it's more of a sand forest. I still have four giant sparrows sitting around from way back near when my fort was founded. I should probably tell my marksdwarves to go kill them.

EDIT:

HA YOU PIECE OF SHIT BIRD I PUT YOU IN A CAGE LAST MONTH CAN'T ESCAPE NOW

So a giant scorpion with wings and a poison sting came in through the well, the was promptly owned by the spearmaster that I told to guard the well. Later, buzzards flew into the top of the Eyrie, which is now complete. I guess they forgot about the military in the room below. They were all killed. Also, some brewer is going to be a legendary bone carver.
