Pro: Finally got some undead!
Con: Wasn't quite prepared for just how many they were (and how many of them were archers). Lost 12 dwarfs. Also, it completely killed my fps while it was going on.
Pro: They had lots of iron and bronze! Using it to give my militia commander, who let a 'torn apart' neck keep him down for all of 5 seconds, some proper armor.
Another pro: Secretive weaponsmith mood produced a candy sword worth just over a million. Also going to the commander. Now I just need another one so he can dual wield them...

Sure, he's already got two swords. Dunno if it's in any way better, but who cares :P

I think i saw a thread about dual-wielding somewhere, but it's kinda old. Dual wielding gives you a extra turn at adventure mode, so you can have your iron spear stuck at a gobbo's chest and still attack him with you iron axe. It's not that useful in adventure mode and i don't think it will be at fortress mode. Just my humble opinion.

I suspect they can carry both but not wield both. A shield would be a better investment.

Adamantine shield would be super light weight but wood would be just as effective (as I recently learned.)

Since the vampire build of dwarf fortress (34.05-0.7 or similar) I haven't really seen vampires in my forts. But now two of my best soldiers were drained of blood, and thanks to massive migrant waves it would have been a tedious task to start cheating and read their profiles, so I built a test area.

I set up a lever-pulling duty for all latest arrivals, and closed the door behind them. I had luck to catch the culprit quite quickly, as only one in Test Group II didnt care at all as months passed and others were released thanks to their growling bellies. I wasn't gonna let that little f*cker get a pathetic beating from my useless guards, no...

I suck at building punishment rooms, as only thing I came up with was drowning chamber. And apparently vampires dont breathe either :'( my grand plan to establish a vampire drowning chamber was born dead. I can almost hear its nails scratching the locked door and floodgate in that flooded room... hurrrh.

You didn't fail you built a vampire fish tank.
Weren't you the "don't you see, the fun was inside you all along" guy as well?

You almost killed me just now, nacho chips + broseph stalin posts = oh god I inhaled part of a chip and am choking to death, too much Fun!

Incidentally, I've gotten dorfs to wield and use hammers and crossbows properly, but not consistently, as in they would plunk things until they got close then beat stuff about the face and ass with the crossbow AND hammer as I hoped.

But copper would be so much easier to smash heads with

Apparently aquifers don't absorb water as fast as I thought they did.

That's three aquifer tiles being overwhelmed by a single screwpump.

As far as I know aquifer absorption rate hasn't changed.  What else is going on there?  Is the water being splashed across the floor instead of into the pit where the aquifers can absorb it?

He's used both in battle (easy to tell, since they were different quality). They use shields or whatever else they might have in their other hand to attack, so wouldn't make sense to not do it with weapons.

I got a second adamantine sword made for him. Turned out to be a masterwork, so I splurged on a set of armor too, even though that's a bit of a waste since none of the armorsmiths were above skilled level. Then I had him put on an artifact mitten, because reasons.

There's a lot of horror in the fort at the moment. Hopefully I can get the mess cleared away before their moods drop too much.

So it seems that if you don't mess with your nobles screen after reaching 50 beards, the mayoral election can get postponed. Mine happened when the year changed and the autosave kicked in. Once i got the mayor's rooms built and all furniture installed, i set her to loaf about indefinitely - two dwarfs became stressed over not having an own bedroom and geting caught in the rain, and they'll probably remain so for the next twenty years. Two moods came up - weaponsmith and engraver. Unfortunately, both were possessions. I built a bunch of floors over the "surface" farm plots. Hopefully this will stop the yearly mystery cave-ins: i had two of the plots and the closing bridge destroyed by a cave-in of _nothing_. Twice. I think it's the phantom growth of a tree that spawned while ramping out the field, which at the time also caved in and crushed the miner. Seems like it's not properly cleared from the map and has tried to "continue" growing. Since floors overwrite trees, i hope this removes the problem.

In more notable news, the "engrave that mountain" quest is starting to show effect: the top two levels of the mountain are fully engraved, and architecture is now a bigger contributor to fort wealth (at 400k) than non-artefact goods. Only ~83 more levels of mountain to go.

Lots of things can cause mystery cave-ins. One of them is ducks flying through imaginary ramps left after aquifer plugging.

Had a visit from a giant rabbit forgotten beast with toxic blood. It only managed to kill a single marksdwarf who decided to start clubbing it with a wooden crossbow (bled to death after having her leg torn off), but all the fort's cats decided to wade through the blood and had to be put down when their limbs rotted off (except the only female, who is pastured in a safe location. Hope she's pregnant).

I tapped the aquifer from the layer above, source-tapped from the center, drained into another channel immediately in front of the eastern-most pump, and made an artificial-waterfall with the flow to the south. There were two drains to the north and west that never got pumps installed because of the water. I wasn't aware water could move over empty space without falling, but yeah that sounds exactly like what happened.
