Human caravan finally showed up after two years. Hopefully get some goblins soon, too. Only metals I have access to are silver, copper and candy. Well, and lead.
Also, small groups of necromancers keep showing up on my doorstep and then immediately running away when the dogs notice them.

It generally seems like guard dogs are far more effective at spotting intruders than before. They usually notice any stealthy intruders while they're still far away.

I'm pretty sure this has to do with the stealth rewrite in some ways.

FPS had sank to 9 since I dug out the eerie cavern.
Maybe I should build the throne room down there when the king arrive. :P

I've made some traps for the necromancer groups; single-tile corpse stockpiles with cage traps. If they won't bring any zombies to entertain me I guess I'll just have to make my own!

I just lost 10 elite dwarfs to a FB made of flame. What is up with these in DF 2014?
Its was the second FB made of flame I have had and both has been nigh ipossible to kill or even target. The only way to kill them have been to post marksdwarfs close by and hope they get a lucky shot. No military dwarfs will target them with an attack command. I managed to seal the last one in the caverns after i failed to kill it.
Situation is till urgent though since it vaporises my only water reserve as soon as it gets close to the underground lake where my wells get their water. And I no longer have a decent military.

A stray dog just went and chased down a wild boar and killed it. Wasn't even a war dog, just an untrained stray dog. Took days for the dog to scratch the boar to death. By the end of it both animals were overcome with terror and exhaustion and constantly passing out. Dog killed it though. I'm not complaining, it's free food for the dwarfs.

My fort in 40.16 is growing well. Our hunter brings in giant hamsters, giant grasshoppers and the occasional stork, unless the bird dies up a tree. Our mayor is an easygoing dwarf fond of leather armor and who prohibits the sale of crossbows. Fine with me, I want to keep the ones we have anyway and the discovery of kaolinite means our pottery trade is doing quite well.

Some cage traps have been installed at various points upon the surface, after I sighted a giant jaguar. No luck there, though we managed to catch an entire tribe of turtle people who waited patiently, one after the other, practically in formation, to step into the cage trap after it was reset by my mechanics. I really had no idea what to do with them all, eventually deciding to breach the first layer of caverns, dig a room there, install the cages. After levers were attached, the breach was walled up and the turtle people released into the caverns. They milled about until a GCS popped out of nowhere and began webbing them up. All but one little turtle man, who keeps thrashing his way out of the webbing, and who the spider can't seem to bite. She keeps going for his shell, or he's using it to shield himself. It's been a steady ongoing battle.

An Ettin appeared on the surface and proceeded to kill four of my fishermen before a mob led by the mayor and a war dog or two attacked the Ettin and killed him. Looks like it's time to start a military, though I don't think I'll draft the mayor despite his bravery. I do want to keep him. He's also good with the trading.

I think someone said it is because the ai doesn't let the soldiers engage in a place that is on fire, and since the FB is made of flame... Too bad they are trap avoid.

I don't like using stagnant ponds to make cisterns, tbh. The source is limited. Is that true with them underground?

A Miner was just killed in a food stockpile by a Yak.  I do not know how the fight started, of why, only that the Yak kicked the dwarf in the head.  There was no sign of a tantrum.  I guess it is just a random yak-related death that happens every now and then.

Currently carving out an entrance to the fort that I am carving into the plateau.  I will need an extremely large block stockpile to do this right.  Also, I suspect the dead miner was my broker.  Time to inter him.  I will create the halls of the dead later.

you get four blocks per stone now I think. I never realized how useful stone blocks were until someone mentioned them being easier to haul.

A herd of unicorns just showed up on my map and I have no cage traps set up. I was planning on blocking out all land wildlife anyway. I am really desperate fora goblin siege though, so I left my borders open.

I know I can't breed them with vanilla but I am not above editing the raws if I can set up cage traps fast enough. More likely, my hunters will kill them, but at least my legendary cook can create masterpiece unicorn steak roasts from them, and I'm sure unicorn bone crafts will be worth -something-.

Always have. It's one of three four reasons I use them, along with hauling time, making smooth walls, and grinding masonry skill on dwarves.

No, not always have.  When the hauling changes and mine carts went it was about when it was changed.

They might be back spring next year. They are a bit of a pain to keep save as grazers but their bones make nice trade goods. I never had more than 20. Might be because I hit their pop cap or just a general wild animal cap. I didn't edit the raws which was a mistake in retrospect. I'm sure they caused some FPS lag with their pathfinding.

PS: I gave my miner a simple job: Knock out the roof over a 4x4 field so we can grow above-ground crops on it. He managed to fall asleep after 4 tiles. Then he managed to cause cave in and get himself killed. You really need some talent to find a way to kill yourself on a 3x4 channel job with a 1z drop in sand...
