A cat managed to knock out a full grown dwarf with a single scratch while being gelded.

Edit: Damn, these animals are fierce about their naughty bits. A guineapig was able to reduce another gelder to a helplessly retching on the ground with a kick.

got the whale traps prepared. I'm terrified to try them out, tbh. I worry I will flood my tank and not be able to drain it or something else will mess up. :/

Why are you worried that your whale traps might catastrophically fail? That is literally one of the coolest things that can happen.

A Forgotten Beast just showed up, made of some stone, with wings and a rhino shape. Never seen a rhino Forgotten Beast. Sent all my military dwarves at it. Dwarven gibbs all over the place. It's exploding chests in gore, with it's gore attack. Set up tons of tables while a gate and wall is constructed. The rhino just flew through after wrecking the tables. Guess what? A dwarven caravan guard with an axe decapitated it in one hit. Wasted all those dwarves for nothing...

Giant cave spider died of old age before I found a suitable partner for breeding. Now, wondering whether I should make a silk farm with normal cave spiders (I have 70 in a cage) or the forgotten beast I got or whether we work with sheep wool now. Wool socks >> silk socks, right?

This time I was careful to not read while eating and risk choking to death again, but yes, this is very true.

Well it depends on how it fails. If I do it wrong and end up catching nothing, it will suck.

I got it working and the sperm whale thread has a link to my uploaded save if anyone is curious. So far creatures don't seem too interested in hanging around the entrances tho :?.

I have restricted the number of dwarves in my fortress to keep the frame rate high.  The downside is that I neglected to reassign my broker to building crafts, and now the elves have come.  I wanted those crafts to trade for booze.  Perhaps theft is the way to go.

My mayor just banned the export of barrels. There goes the food trade.

Yes, except that I have zero so far. I can make plenty, of course, it's no disaster.... just annoying.
