I embarked on a necromancer tower using dfhack with a miner, woodcuter, craftsdwarf, farmer, 3 proficient dodgers, novice spearman, novice armor user, and the rest into fighter. I modded it so cats are trainable, and bring 1 female, 1 male, 4 war. All dwarfs have copper armor and weapons. I was killed in 2 minutes. All of my dwarves/cats dead. Took down 34 zombies. There were 82 zombies in the tower. We were slaughtered.

Killjoy:  A single miner, and a single mechanic are able to destroy the entire necromancer tower.

Here's how:

q over the doors to the tower. Lock them, and forbid them. This traps the necromancers and zombies inside, at least for the time being.
Channel all around the tower except 1 small supporting tile. Mine all underneath. Use the mechanic to create mechanisms. place a support underneath the tower, and a lever outside the tower. Link them. Remove the remaining supporting bit of land.

The tower is now supported ONLY by the support.

Pull the lever. Watch the carnage.

Humans and their contraptions.

Q and lock the exit. Bring silver war hammers and bronze mail shirts, copper shields, and bronze helms, and then leather armor, leggings, gloves, high boots, cloaks, and hoods, one set for each dwarf, plus some. Each dwarf should be proficient with hammerdwarf, and then two points in shield user, three in armor. Minus one, who should be a novice judge of intent and appraiser, plus a proficient weapon smith and three points in whatever else you want. Once the first migrants arrive, suit them up, and charge the tower.

The thing is, once i'm in the map, they immediately come rushing out to my dwarves. so i thought for my next game, i'll have 2 miners, 1 woodcuter, a craftsdwarf, a farmer, a animal trainer, and a broker/bookeeper/leader, 10 war cats, 5 female, 5 male, and i modded it so i can have trainable foxes, so i can have 2 war females and 2 war male. Once in-game, ill wall myself of at the bottom right, the towers at the top left.

Apparently, one of the engravers in my new fort was the heir to a barony – somewhere else – and now he's a baron. Of somewhere else.

On top of that, before he was an engraver, he was a hunter, until on his first hunt at my fort he managed to get his arm bitten off by a wounded yak. He's done nothing but complain to whichever dwarf happens to be in charge since the incident. So.. will he just... go and be the baron of somewhere else, somewhere else? 'Cause now he's asking for baron housing.
...
I share your pain - I have not two, but three barons in my fort. Plus a mayor. They are mandating like crazy, faster than I can respond.

I plan to become a capital as soon as the dwarven caravan finds its way to my fortress. I just hope that I will not get multiple kings.

In other news: two Fire Imps somehow managed to enter the central staircase of The Zulbanasiz (a.k.a. The Bannerflashes). The FPS dropped to 1 and the game is hardly playable. The military is on the case to contain the threat.

Edit: the FPS is zero now.

Built the garbage chute for dumping stuff in the magma sea a bit too close to it, so the garbage room fills with magma mist when the lever is pulled.

In other news, my mayor is missing and his smoking clothes were found just outside the chute room...

It seems so, which is hilarious.

Congratulations, you just invented the dwarven sweat lodge. Soon every noble will want one to their apartments.

It could also be automated; for instance a trap door in ceiling could drop a boulder into a magma pool whenever the noble needs relaxation from all the mandating and demanding.

This reminds me of how I've lost three mayors to werebuffalo attacks already.

You should keep in mind that mayors have a legitimate purpose in a fort's life (apart from annoying the overseer with mandate-making and ordering punishments): they're responsible for calming down unhappy dwarfs and if we ever get anything resembling a dwarven economy again, they'll probably play an important role in administrating that. The dwarfs also automatically choose the dwarf best suited to the job, so it's actually in your own interest to keep your mayors alive and happy. Murdering your mayors for shits and giggles is incompetent overseeing. Landed nobility - barons and the like - are another matter entirely.

(note: due to implementation bugs in the emotion re-write, calming down unhappy dwarfs currently doesn't work, but a competent mayor can defuse nascent tantrum spirals under the old emotion system.)

I had a crazy woodcutter become Queen of my settlement, only to have her stop working so that she would stop being so proud of herself. She kept talking to the outpost leader, for some reason, following him around. And she dreamed of making wonderful crafts...

At a later stage, at another fort, I built a glorious wooden fortress out of DEFORESTATION! and the woodcutter messed up again. This time it was probably a bite from a snake or something, because he just lied down on the ground sleeping all the time. The liasion was standing next to him and 6 buckets, because I had reclaimed the fort after goblins kobolds had killed every dwarf in it.

The weretortoise came to the front entrance just at the same time as the dwarven caravan was leaving. I hesitated to activate the Great Goblin Banisher on the caravan, so the beast entered the fort unharmed. The weretortoise killed a few dorfs before the military rally to response. The marksdwarves had trouble penetrating the armor, so I panicked and ordered a frontal assault. The battle continued for days and only after the beast turned back to human form I have been able to finish it. I hoped that I may have lucked out with only ten dead dwarves. But soon after, four of my most trusted dorfs turned to weretortoises themselves. I eventually managed to kill them too, but at that point I knew we are all doomed. With great sorrow I have to report that the fortress of Bannerflashes had to be condemned and abandoned.
