Weretortoise... that sounds adorable.
If by "adorable" you mean that 20 armydwarves can bash on its shell for days without killing it, then yes, very adorable  :D

downloaded the phoebus version of 40.16 and started a pocket region with a 2x2 embark, everything is running smoothly, strange, i keep an average of 100 FPS even when having like 50 dorfs in the fort. the fort has been designed to be compact, and i have just started to build a militia, its already fortified with walls and drawbridges but no signs of goblins yet. not enough metals to create weapons or armor however (only tin and platinum right now). looks like i will have to rely on trading for now. plenty of food for mantaining the population and beds are covered, dinning hall in the finished stage, and graveyards are being built.

nothing new for now. except loosing a dorf due to an uncompleted mood and my two embark dogs which died helping to hunt some horses.

Summer of year two in Questmountain. After back-to-back visits of a cyclops and an ettin I must say that the budding militia is doing very well indeed.

Bringing a soldier/teacher in embark and recruiting a squad from the first migrant wave seems to be paying off.

A forgotten beast has shown up in Silentthunders. It is all too reminiscent of a bronze colossus, in that it is humanoid and constructed entirely out of black bronze. It is however considerably more deadly in that it also exudes a deadly mist whose symptoms are untested.
Luckily the drawbridges in the Quarry lip were closed to allow scheduled maintenance beforehand and it has no direct access to the surface world so far. A zombie cave spider was caught in one of the Dwarves's bedrooms and if I can drop it on the Black Colossus I hope to capture such a potent weapon for my own uses. Zombie spiders still retain webbing capabilities, right? The alternative is to strike it with my military, considering its unique properties I am not going to gladly engage what seems to be a bronze god of war. Casualties would be plentiful.

So I long ago modded [LIKES_FIGHTING] into a custom fortress race.  They are a race with natural claws and sharp teeth after all, I figured they should probably be a little less wary of a fight than the average human or dwarf.

Never seemed to make much of a diffrence in behavior before, but this most recent fort I set up a caverns outpost before having enough soldiers to keep a proper guard down there.  Instead I threw a couple ducks down there and decided to just keep an ear open for the sounds of fighting in soundsense.

The civilians venturing down there seem to be perfectly capable of handling themselves.  Most of the monsters flee, only to get chased down and ripped to shreds by the civilian they spooked.  My Chief Medic jumped on a giant toad and clawed it to death, a cave crocodile chased the ducks into the half built cavern fortifications where the masons dogpiled the thing and ripped it to shreds.  I thought Likes fighting was more or less disabled, but now my residents seem more bloodthirsty than ever.

The Black Bronze Colossus unleashed its awful dust and launched itself from the side of the Quarry pit into the open air, where I was certain it would plummet to its doom in the magma sea. Unfortunately it simply landed on the bee hives and surpassed most of the Quarry's defences entirely, effectively using its dust attack as rocket fuel to propel its metallic bulk across several zlvls of open air. It is currently breaking through the last hatch before it is fully within the subterranean Fortress complex defences; the corpse spider trap will have to win or the colossus shall surely carve its way to the surface.

a goblin siege came at last, due to an error trying to give the orders to the militia i lost more than half of the fort, and im just recently recovering, strangely, my militia was able to exterminate all the goblins, but i dont know how will they'll handle against a larger siege, as its only a matter of time before the goblins officers and trolls appear. for now the fort recovers. and have the masons churning out coffins in order to bury the poor souls.

Nearing the end of my first year; also playing for the first time in eons. Lost my first half-year when I was working on a quantum compressor.

So far, I've managed to get myself a nice little living arrangement in the core of my fortress, for the time being; temporary housing. I have a water hole/cistern/tavern (rather basic, though stylish dining) in the north-east cluster of my fort (especially since I have to deal with snowy outdoors and frozen water), my barracks nearby at north, and the farms and food processing north-west. I'm beginning housing developments southward, and just got started doing serious mining work (stone mining; no more dirt/clay cutting). Got 17 dwarves, just made a decent trade, and no hostiles yet (though the liaison informed me of events nearby hostilities; despite the fact I colonized an island). I'll probably get my military setup by the next migrant wave. If I'm not going to be dealing with local hostiles, then I need to at least ready-up for when I hit the caverns.

When I finish my year, I'll post a map of my fort's progress. It looks similar to the flowchart I made for it. I must say, I love the tree update. An over-abudance of wood supply, and not as much risk harvesting lumber. I selectively harvest non-fruit-bearing trees. One part food supply, one part pacing to preserve the environment for rendering. I'm aiming for the skies with my fort when I start building aboveground. And who knows, if local threat is low enough, I might craft our dwarves a small (fleet of) airship(s) for transit to/from the island. After all, wood is no longer an issue, and I want to craft a few of my other lesser Blood-class airships.

i struck tetrahedrite at deeper lvls this should kickstart my metal industry, i may not have enough for armor but this should allow me to make top grade bludgeon weapons from the silver, and maybe some copper/bronze armors....

On one stone layer of the fortress, I've managed to get a 2994427 urists worth fortress with only 26 dwarves. 9/10ths of that is two artifacts made of platinum and expensive gems, though.

in the middle of a massive bolt recovering work, and building an atom smasher in order to destroy corpses, hopefully this will help to gain some FPS, im around 40-30 right now. smelting is in process at the same time of fuel production, and there's plenty of wood yet, some dorfs have taken weapons from the stockpiles so now im having mix of different experts. no marksdwarves yet

the dumping zone is ready but they're not putting stuff in there, i dont know why, the zone is active, i have idle dorfs and corpses are marked for dumping (big purple D), also a kangaroo doe jumped in one of my traps and is in process of taming, the buck was nearby but never passed around the other traps. so looks like i have a single animal for now. will have to wait and see what happens. im producing all kinds of weapons with the silver (maces, warhammers and cages) and the bronze(swords, axes and spears). no armor yet.
