I remember right after the update with the necromancers and vampires some folks talking about intentionally putting their suspect vampire dwarfs in a position where undead could attack them in order to weed out the witches vampires.

"If the undead eat her she wasn't a vampire!"

"But doesn't that mean she'll be dead?"

"Tough luck!"

That's what it looks like's going to happen here, too. Wow. The Mechanic turned into a werewolf and bit the Militia Commander before being cut down; I need to dig him a pen and lock him in. Maybe eventually channel the trap labyrinth into it. :D

EDIT: Forgot to mention the Mechanic werehyena killed my jeweler and one of my miners, too. :/

Artifact water buffalo bone figurine was just made.

Just as useless and fortress-morale-shattering as you could imagine, some elf tearing out some dwarf's eyelid.  Also, a rendition on it of the Minotaur Rislu Yearlingsweats the Subtle Persuader murderballing one of my dwarves with, of all things, a dog leather robe.  Most likely the one that the dwarf was wearing, if prior minotaurossi practices are any indication, although most of my records of that event were destroyed in the ensuing chaos of cleanup and tantrum spirals.  The minotaur cow only killed about a dozen dwarves but the tantrums following that left about 10 stranded when the bridge to them was torn down, they all starved or dehydrated, a miner went berserk (and martial tranced when i sent my untrained recruits to go deal with him, yowch), and three dorfs esploded when they hit the ground, due to their standing in the wrong place when the bridge was torn down (namely, on said bridge).

All in all, cleanup is almost complete and the fortress is doing fine.  Obviously I've mandated creation of actual weapons and armor for my militia, I'll be outfitting ALL citizens with crossbows so the militia doesnt need to handle berserkers, and the bridge has been reconstructed so I'm considering putting some emergency food and drink supplies in the holdout that starved so many dorfs earlier.

I'm left to wonder what the elven traders who were there to witness most of that were thinking.  Probably laughing their smug asses off about it all.  Also, I have this nagging feeling that giving weapons to all dwarves is a bad idea, but I'm not sure why.

Oh right, they're dwarves.  Cue epicly horrific tantrum spiral on the horizon.

EDIT:  I am... I find myself humbled.  Upon noticing a strange piece of clothing in my courtyard pond, I inspected it.  Dog leather robe.  Curious, I looked at its details.  Ahem.  It killed.... a few more dwarves than I had expected.  Rislu slew 17 dwarves, 6 sugar beetles, and a dog with those robes.  Rather than picture the mind-boggling intricacies of beating someone or thing to death with a robe, I prefer to imagine that the minotaur merely held them down and strangled them with it.

In an alternate universe of Amberfrost, the necromancer decided to reanimate the pile of kea corpses on the bridge. With no military to defend the fort, the keas killed some people before they were all re-killed. Then a tantrumming dwarf smashed a door, and the undead horde outside waltzed in with the necro.
I savescummed, because I didn't want to lose the fort just yet.

Things are going good in my new kobold cave.
My bolds have thousands of meat and fish, and several wood farms.
During a fight with a pegasus, a fire somehow started, burning down my trade depot, a bunch of plants and one of my hunting raptor things.

One of the migrants to Axehold got a strange mood. He's a weaponsmith...he withdrew from society....and he grabbed some bronze bars, camel bone, and limestone. Heck yeah, he's started his construction! Hopefully he makes some sort of axe weapon, otherwise I'll have to bend my rules a bit to use the artifact.

In other news, fort construction goes faster thanks to enlisting migrants in stone block duty, and a bunch of excess stray animals shall be slaughtered. One of the migrants is a skilled wound dresser and bone doctor, but may be a vampire as well, considering his high social skills.

...and the weaponsmith made a spiked bronze ball. Well, that's still useful, but rats. I would've at least preferred a hammer.

EDIT: Shortly afterwards we got our first elf ambush. Apparently by adding the [ITEM_THIEF] tag to the dwarf civ makes all other civs hostile, it's interesting for more !!FUN!! but so far I haven't had any ambushes besides goblins. The 4 axedorfs have been sent out to repel the attackers, but what's this? The axedorfs are all wielding wooden training axes, despite the uniform assigning them bronze battle axes! So far, they've slain one elf, but I'm not keeping my hopes up yet. The doors into the fort have been locked, the Spears of Heart are on their own now.

EDIT2: I've created a new dwarven sport---elf beating. The 4 axedworfs of the Spears of Heart have successfully repelled the elvish ambush, slaying 8 swordelves and currently beating up a ninth one that wasn't quick enough to run. A good thing too, there was an elvish bowman leading the ambush, but he was content to stay back and watch his pansy soldiers get beaten to death with training axes and wooden shields. It was funny to imagine, many of the elves were simply chilling by the locked doors without even helping their comrades' against our troops.

I'm thinking of turning the Spears of Heart squad into a dedicated "elf-whackers" team armed with training axes for future ambushes and sieges at Axehole. This was hilarious.

EDIT3:So as the rest of the elves continued to flee the elf bowman finally starts taking shots at the newly deemed "Treebeards" of the Spears of Heart. The 4  bronze-clad axedorfs are now ganging up on the bowman, who apparently has a war polar bear mount. They couldn't down the bear in time before the bowman escaped off the map, but they certainly gave the bear a bruising. No injuries were sustained by the dorfs, even against the bowman. Wow, elves are pansies.

Things are progressing slowly in SplashCanyon (fitting name that, considering it's housed at the top of a waterfall), mostly due to the extensive amount of mining needed to create the dam I want.

A year has passed, and I was hoping on having the dam operating by the end of the first winter (since the water freezes, it's much easier to do the operations needed near water at that time), but I fear that it will have to be postponed for another year, unfortunately.

Otherwise, things are going pretty well. I've had a couple of migrant waves, boosting our number to 20, as well as a dwarven caravan, which supplied us with some much needed wood, so that I can finally get some beds made.

Funny thing though, after having done quite a bit of cursing due to the fact that you cannot make beds out of rock or metal, my mason was taken by a mood... What did he make? "Gikutborush, a Dolomite bed". Didn't even know that was possible. Of course, he seems to have forgotten how he made it right away, so no more stone beds for me.

A werepanda attacked my fortress, and bit one of the wild giant moles that never leave the map. The mole survived, and now I have a month to trap her in a cage, I guess. I'm having my soldiers herd it towards some cage traps. Hopefully it works...

Nope. The stupid thing walked up to a soldier, who promptly beat it to death. Damnit!

Well, I started, then lost the settlement of Worthyrampart. Things were going fairly well until a zombie siege showed up very early. Things were still manageable when a giant skinless fox that shoots fire appeared in the caverns. Things quickly turned to flaming hell when said forgotten beast got through my underground walls through an unseen diagonal gap and burnt everyone. Not a fun loss, that diagonal shit is shit and I can't seem to survive long enough to even get stable if I embark anywhere remotely hostile.

I'm play testing my modded civ in the least threatening evil biome I have ever seen.

No zombies, no syndrome, only a cloud that stun. That cloud is actually helpful because the stunned are brought to the hospital until they wake up, generating a good thought. Oh, and in case you get hungry, there is elephants.

I'm getting tired of all the damned ambushes on the map, that aren't being hit by dust clouds and sticking around near the animal traps, or waiting to ambush my caravans. My militia can't handle then at the moment, so I'm in the process of making a better defense system for caravans and collecting goblinite.

I already have a large area sealed off with walls, and am in the process of cutting it into a winding pathway for caravans to follow into the sheltered depot. That way the caravans will have a slightly longer route to take than goblins, and the goblins should follow the designated grinder path.

The grinder will be simple, just mine carts spinning around on tracks, and bashing everything to death, with a few cage traps before the grinders for live prisoners.

Should work nicely.

Well, after losing my last fort to a crash last night, I've started a new one. Sinister tundra with necrosis-inducing "vile ash" clouds, and, as I discovered too late, no ore of any kind whatsoever. I was going to go with a glacier (at the urging of someone on IRC), but there were none in my world, so the tundra had to do.

There is, perhaps, one redeeming quality: I have sand, so once I find magma I'll be all set for some glass weapon traps.
