Having tamed Giant Cave Spiders is like being able to call a ceasefire, they just soak the whole battlefield of goblins and dwarves in GCS webs.

Ooh, do GCSs breed? Domesticate the offspring, dispose of the parents, and you've got completely safe web-generators. :D

only if you edit the raws

IT SHALL BE SO!!! -said in the voice of the IG priest from Dawn of War.-

BunnyBunches the Rabbit-Hut

01) Embark
02) 6 Flavors of Hell

My immediate goal is to clear out space.
This hut is cramped... Can't do anything, and the Yaks are a ticking timebomb.
Clearing discovers what I already know.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Oh God, our first lucky break.
Those dozen undead peregrine men swoop by as the last wall is raised.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Goal is to deal with the Yaks first.
One has a single tile of grass, so I don't expect her to last very long.
Only DwarfPoints on embark were a skilled doctor and military.
So no masonry, no mining skill i.e. Every swing of the pick matters.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Wow, discovered I have foul vapors.
Not the dwarven bowels, these are outside the fort.
OMG What happened to my brook ??
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Mining finally picks up the pace.
Also, I use my single-workshop space to start charcoal production

Decided to have a second embark as well, and managed to find a flat plain with no aquifier and both shallow and deep metals. I wanted the flat plain because it'd be a pain in the rump to do my Dwarven Tower Defense project over multiple z-levels.

This is my embark list:

I have embarked with the above Group, and immediatly end up finding a 'lair' of some sort. After looking around, I find it, and there's a giant in it. Wiki says this about them:

Quote
Giants are Building destroyers and Semi-megabeasts of great size attracted by Wealth just like regular Megabeasts and Titans. They dwell in caves, and if you happen to embark near one, you may be in for a quick dose of fun. You will get a warning message when they appear.

Luckily, it hasn't seemed to notice us, but I'm ready to have Urst McSwordsdwarf try to fight it off.

Last siege left my CMD rather less than extatic because a long-time friend of his died in combat. While he was patching up a wounded dwarf in the hospital, another one suffocated on his own blood. My CMD, now having witnessed death, became miserable and started tantruming in his sleep in his bedroom. I've locked him up but I don't think he's going to become happier anytime soon.  :-\

In far more amusing news, my 14-z drop onto a spiketrap works damn fine. It's impaled goblins, war olms, rutherers and jabberers without any trouble. Generally leaving the mutilated corpse (the torso, really) impaled on the spikes while heads, arms, legs and (optionally,) tails land on top/fly everywhere.

My original plan was to leave the door locked untill I was done and it all started rotting so I could collect the clothes, armour, weaponry and skeletons to process into bones etcetera, but then I realised that not only would that be a waste of the thoroughly useless meat, but I'd also be denying myself a large quantity of leather! Can't have that!

My resident vampire is dead :).  I wanted to let dwarven justice happen on its own, so he survived the first two sentences of jail and hammer strikes, but the 3rd set of hammer strikes bashed his brain, and so ends his terror after 5 of my dwarfs were drained.
The rest of the fort is encrusting random trade goods with junk stones, and the military prepares to slay the forgotten beasts in the first cavern.

Designated a large area to be mined to fuel the "roof the map" project. Nearly forgot to unmark the walls of the aquifer fed well, which would have flooded my fort.... pfew, close call there.

HOLY@#$% moment here. Same fortress. My swordsdwarf had recently died when I sent him to kill a lone cave crawler, and we have made him lay to rest when BAM! Suddenly I'm getting reports that "Urist McWhoever has been struck down!"

I quickly pause the game and go to my main fort floor to see a jabberer tearing through my dwarves! I order everyone that's still alive to kill it. We lost an additional Dwarf in the process of killing it, but it's dead now.

Who's Dead:

Urist McMiner
Urist McMiner
Urist McBrewer
Urist McSwordsdawrf

Who's Alive:

Urist McWoodworker (Well, at least I can make coffins for the dead...)
Urist McLeader[Farmer] (We still have our food grower!)
Urist McStoneworker (Maybe he could engrave the walls around the caskets...)

The stoneworker is unhappy, and the expedition leader is miserable, but surprisingly the woodworker is still ecstatic.

I guess all the death and sh*t is starting to get through the woodworker's skull, because now he's simply content. Stoneworker is now very unhappy and Leader is still miserable.

Urist McFisherDorf has been killed by a Werelizard. Who proceeded to evade the entire military and escape off the map edge.
