Roll 9 - Taking Inventory



Drink enough wine to get me to my natural state, take a few more bottles and stash them somewhere private. ((Or as private as I can manage.))

New Trait: Decadence

After tasting the excellent flavor of wine that is quite literally hundreds of years old, you look for places to create a stash. Fortunately enough, the kitchen is located next to a series of cabins and bedrooms. The rooms are unlabeled except by number, but none of them seem to be occupied, and there is a locked container inside each one for the storage of options. The key is located inside the nightstand drawer, along with other small trinkets such as grooming supplies, a Bible, and a hand-powered flashlight. It resembles a hotel room.

Go to the garden.

You pass by Vex in the bridge and go around into the hydroponics section of the ring. Here, a compartmentalized greenhouse contains various plants saved from the various worlds humanity left. There are also bees happily going about doing bee things.

Does this crawlspace extend to the right or to the left? If so, attempt to find some sort of item that I could use to help me climb up and out of this hole. If not, set down my toolkit and use it as a stand for me to ascend and climb out. I can come back for it later.

[Crawlspace Dimensions: 1] The space ends at the wall, and does not go to the sides of the floor. However, you notice that the contour of the crawlspace is different from that of the floor. While the floor panels are each set at an angle from the previous and next, facilitating a slight curve to the floors, the bottom of the crawlspace is completely straght. It just so happens that as you go closer to the center of the compartment, the floor reaches closer and closer to the bottom of the crawlspace, stopping at the bottom level of pipes and doodads.

[Improvised Stool: 2+2/8 = ~3] With the toolkit standing up on edge, it gives you about half a meter to work with. Trying not to cut yourself again, you slowly lift yourself to ground level.

Don't touch the console for now. Explore elsewhere.

[Luck: 5] As you pass by the rooms, you come across the one thing you really need at this moment: a map! Stapled onto the wall is a plastic sheet with a map of the zero-gravity segment of the ship. According to the map, there are seven levels of cryo, with the shuttle bay located at the top of the stack and the cargo bay at the bottom. You are currently heading down, according to the map. This means closer to the engines.

Well, dang. Look around the ship for any other useful information, maybe?

You exit the bridge and look around for... well, anything. You recall noticing some sort of launch bay control somewhere as you previously made your way through the halls. As you reach the panel, you activate it and it displays a list of the craft your ship has available:

Currently Docked:
3x Tanker class fuel transport (500t each) (Heavy tug for carrying supplies through orbits)
2x Wanderer scanner probe (100t each) (Provides two sensor power each for close-range scanning near where it is deployed. Relays info back via laser)
5x Scavenger remote ice miner (10t each) (Can be left on icy moons or planets to mine water, for use as propellant or supplies.)
18x Hummingbird atmospheric skimmer (2t each) (Light scout plane. Can only fly in atmospheres. Must be deployed from another craft, and is recovered off the surface by ground teams.)
2x Kite gas harvester (800t each) (used to collect hydrogen gas from gas giant atmospheres)
3x Predator class transport shuttle (75t each) (Can carry ten people. Uses highly versatile chemical rockets, but only has 50% of its mass dedicated to fuel storage.) (Current DeltaV: 5000 m/s)

You hear something being dragged around on the floor grates, coming from a couple rooms away. Moving closer to investigate, you also hear massed water dripping from something.

As I finished my coffee, I noticed that our hero had yet again discovered something. A map, this time. However, until an executive decision is made, our hero has nothing to do with this section of the ship. Perhaps our hero can be the first to set sights on a particular goal, and take up a leadership position.

It's not easy, and would require a lot of fuel, but there is another way to go about it...

Ares I has an orbital period of about a month. If you were to enter a parking orbit with it, you could transfer back to your original orbit, this time with the right timing.

Base Cost: 7600 m/s
Travel Time: 10m

Alternatively, you could simply travel to Ares I, and return to Ares IV after you are finished.

Due to your crew's highest navigational skill, you get +0 to navigation rolls.

Orbital Period: The period it takes to complete an orbit.

Roll 10 - Is it really so hard?



Take flashlight and key. Go find others, locking up behind me.

To your delight, the key locks both the chest and the door.

As you return to the elevator to look for others, you stumble upon Philbert in the kitchen, slicing a watermelon with a large knife. He is about halfway done, and has left some slices on the open counter, ripe for the picking.

Finish up my miniquest by eating 2 fruits or vegetables. Not potatoes, or any other poisonous/dangerous food.

You decide to pick a couple of grapes from one of the four vines, seeing as they are already ripe for picking. You then search for other fruits and vegetables, tripping over a watermelon that had grown outside of its stand. Why not? You carry the watermelon into the kitchen, start preparing slices, and taste a bit just to make sure it's ready.

New Trait: Connoisseur (Gain +1 to all actions for three turns after tasting a new food.)

Someone walks down the hall, stopping behind you.

Explore the outer parts of the ship.

Turning back, Harry decides to take the elevator. Sadly, his stomach isn't ready for it.

[3] In the elevator, you notice that there is only one button, labelled 'GO DOWN' by a little LCD screen to the side of it. Pressing it, the elevator lurches downward, upsetting your stomach as the gravity slowly increases. You hang onto the handlebar for dear life as the ten minute trip turns to hours. At the end, you stumble out and embrace the floor, having missed gravity for so long.

Very carefully, move closer to check out what exactly is being dragged around... avoid any sudden water blasts.

Suspicious of any sudden leaks or explosions--you wouldn't want hot cooling water in your face--you place your ear to the hatch door first before opening it. You hear someone getting up on the other side, and assume it's safe to go out and help.

You open the door... and it's Katelyn! With a bloody arm no less! What could have possibly gone wrong this early on the ship?

Hop fully out of there and proceed with my previous action of seeking medical help.

You don't have to seek it, as Zaynab opens the door and rushes to help. She hasn't noticed any sort of clinic or infirmary just yet, although several of the restrooms may have emergency medical supplies. You probably want to ask for help on Zaynab's communicator.

The navigation computer doesn't seem to plot out a trip as you'd like. If you want to rendezvous with the moon, surely it can't be hard to just slightly increase the orbital speed and thrust toward the planet to compensate for the eccentricity of the orbit?

[1+3+1/10 = ~3] At least, however, you are able to make some sense of the computer. The navigation computer assumes constant thrust at the maximum throttle for the engine--about 1 G or 10 m/s². It seems that the engine cannot be throttled down at all, though. You vaguely recall that the ship had a nuclear thermal rocket of some sort, and then dig up the information on the dashboard settings: The engine uses a vortex of gaseous nuclear fuel, which heats the propellant as it enters the chamber. Without enough fuel flow into the chamber, the vortex cannot be maintained and too much fuel leaks into space, severely hampering the thrust and decreasing efficiency by a massive amount. So for now, you are limited to quick burns.
