As the pilots filed out, Jimmy realised he probably should too, and went off to see what ship he’d been assigned, taking one last look at those sensor readings before he left, with his eyes not entirely leaving the pad as he walked.

Get my ship (a thunderchild preferably). Check it is seaworthy spaceworthy.

Walking slowly around his ship Auron runs his hand across the hull and edge of the wings feeling the scars of its past battles and smiles, "a thunderchild for a thunder king... how appropriate" he thinks, we are going to go far together, my old battered warrior.
Then he turns away to inspect the blackweave and typhoon vessels.

inspect the other two vessel types but dont mess with them. Still hold my thunderchild in higher regard than the other two types regardless of how much they may outclass my vessel in certain aspects.

You skirt a puddling of glowing liquid, inspecting the Typhoon, which is somewhat proudly mounted in the middle launch slot...

This one seems to have been much better taken care of, and undergone a recent refitting-the guns are standard, fairly weak plasma lances (they have been freshly mounted), but the missiles are non-standard, 'Incendio' corporation Hydras. You've had a few of these fired at you over the course of the years, mostly by pirates. They're pretty nasty...you've heard of some pilots using the black market to smooth over what the Empire can't provide.

Not surprisingly, the armor shows little damage, the shield generator no sign of overcharge-except for a recent, quite large blowout through the port, right into the cockpit-about stomach level. It's been hastily welded and molded back, but the bleak spot is still there. You frown-looks like an explosive rail round took the last pilot who rode this one.

In fact, you feel the somewhat morbid urge to climb up into the cockpit yourself. After a moment of discomfort-it's quite cramped, possibly since the last pilot was a slimmer, shorter female-you settle in. It's interesting, that most of the internals are non factory standard. There seems to have been a few upgrades and frills added to it-notably a homemade broadband signal tracking jammer and a shoebox sized 'stealth' detector. Along with a gyro-stabilized cup holder, seat warmers and a custom stereo system.

Also, noticing the empty spots where pictures and mission notes were probably once tacked on the dash and hud, you come to the realization that this is quite likely the last fighter you heard about...before.

By all accounts, White Wing was utterly destroyed to the man. Only the one woman returned, and she died of her injuries not long after-her bird, though, seems to have survived.

Given the short life span of these craft, she must have been an amazing pilot to have returned through that mess with her Typhoon intact. Short one vital mistake, anyway.

Afterwards, you make a cursory inspection of the Blackweave...

There's not much to say. These things are battered and beaten and dirty and probably still fly as good as they did 1000 years ago, or whenever. It's fallen grandeur makes them interesting to look at, anyway. They are great for those still learning the game, being extraordinarily hard to stop.

These ones are not exactly factory fresh. You suppose the local militia 'donated' them. At least the original guns are in place-good old Tricannons, often removed and sold to better craft. Your first kill (simulated) was with such a weapon, and it was with them you learned all your marksmanship tricks.

It also has a few ancient wave pulse missiles and bizarrely, a full load of Hullbuster bombs-if you had a proper engineering team, they would have kitted you out properly for this mission. Then again, who knows if you might need a big boom on the mission?

Prospero walked with the other pilots to the grav-beam, going over the briefing in his mind. This was it, then. Had he done the right choice, coming here? He supposed he'd find out soon.

Follow the others and check on my ship.

Solana tugs on Inara's sleeve. "Let's go look at our ships too. By the way, my callsign is Paprika." The second half is directed towards the rest of her wing.

Go check on the ships. Or my ship, more exactly.
Also, bullypester a mechanic into seeing that everything's nice and squeaky. Also, pester him into cleaning the windows for me D:

Though you all make exhaustive checks, you find no immediate problems-most of these vessels have been barely flown at all, or been stored in processing for many years.

Solana instead finds a sleepy mechanic, and bugs him into checking her own ship. He bangs on it a few times randomly, and announces its 'Clean as a keen whistle, yes ma'am, no problems at all.'

Upon indication the windshield needs a good wiping, he comments. "Washings not my job, Ma'am. I just keep the birds flyin'." He finishes with a frown, crossing his thick arms

"Is too! You said that it's clean as a keen whistle. Keen whistles are by nature clean. Therefore you need to clean it. Otherwise you won't get a clean keen whistle, just a regular whistle."

Solana says the above with a perfectly serious expression, trying to con the man into cleaning. She doesn't like cleaning. Wet stuff is the worst. Ever.
On another hand, her heart rate started to go up. Space, outside, just a pair of three-meter thick blast airlocks and a thin wrapper of a shield away.

Walking back over to his thunderchild Auron climbs into the cockpit then adjusts everything to conform to his body, completes the pre flight checks and boots up a game of galaga on his pad while he waits for the launch order.

play galaga in cockpit, beat high score

"Exactlyy. Now get cleaning. I'll be the musician, you be the clean-plane-er." Solana nods gravely. She puts an arm around the engineer's waist and firmly guides him towardsthr cleaning tools.

Spying the box of tricks snuggled away in the Typhoon’s cockpit, Jimmy looked about to check no one was watching, jumped in, and started checking out his new ship and its shiny buttons. He’d never been in anything so nifty looking before.

”So… uh… everyone set?” he asked, slightly guiltily.

Oh gods I’m going to die, he thought to himself. My skin’s thicker than this bloody hull… Hope no one breathes on me...

Prospero sighed, moving away from the Blackweave. It was a beautiful old thing, but he was painfully aware of the thing's age. The Thunderchilds, on the other hand...

Claim a Thunderchild! Check if everything's working and see if I can make sense of the targeting computers.

I was going for Aether Wraiths but...

Inara was shocked back to reality by Solana- now known as Paprika's voice. "I guess that's a good idea. Fare all well, my callsign's Ruin by the way."

Check the ships, try to scout out a ship which holds two people. If not, aim for an unoccupied Thunderchild.

"Also, stay calm. That's the least I can offer - we'll be in contact with each other anyway. A squad is together until the end..."

She eyed the Typhoon and its lucky pilot - goodness how she wanted to fly in one of them - him getting a salute as her eyes swept across the hangar to check on everyone else, giving Paprika a subtle wink as she adjusted herself into the cockpit of the fighter.

Through death or derision...we will be staying together. she failed to add.

"Fair enough, Prophet. You wanna talk to me directly during the mission, you contact Cowboy. Now I'm gonna see about getting me a ship and making sure my team is divided into pairs." He tipped his hat to Ali, and gave a nod to Clem and Tash. "Good luck out there, y'all. Hopefully it's nothing too serious." He headed to the hangar and took inventory on what ships were available for the mission. Also, he got everyone's attention. Once he had it, he spoke. "Now, way I see it, we got enough for three pairs to watch each other's backs. I'm gonna suggest a set, but if you have problems let me know and we'll hash it out before we're out there. Now, you two ladies seem to be getting along well, so you'll make one pair. Jimmy, I think you and Prospero would make a good team. Auron, you got any problems being my wingman?"

"I don't have a problem with that, boss," said Jimmy, getting out his cockpit, walking over to Prospero and offering a firm hand. "Good luck, wingmate. Watch my back," he said, forcing back a happy grin now that things were set and they were about to see action. "Let's go. Any last minute orders boss?"

He wanted to make a joke about Prospero's well-regarded sharpshooting back at the academy, but thought it wasn't the time or place. For some reason his mind was distracted by thoughts of ancient philosopher kings.

"Yeah, I'll get you up on the plan. We're with the Blue Wings for this mission. Their leader's an old gal, so she knows what she's doing. Now, the plan is that two of the Blue Wings are going to accompany us, it being our first mission and all so we gotta have a babysitter I guess. The other four of them will scout ahead of us and check out each post in order. We're to follow along and do what we can for each station - repair it or whatever - and to keep our eyes peeled in case her four hustle back to us. That means there's trouble and we gotta go weapons hot."

Scott looked at his team. "That's about it, really. Should be a cakewalk but let's not get lazy out there. Oh, and if we see any civvies trying to escape, we talk 'em down first if we can. Only start firing if Blue Wing does." He didn't particularly like that last bit - both it being necessary and having to say it to his team - but they had to follow Command's orders. He took off his hat and pushed his hair back. "Anything else y'all wanna say or ask? Might as well get it out now, before we're out there."
