"I like thunder... and red ain't natural, where I come from, less it's blood, and that's a bad omen if ever I heard'f one. Nah, thunder is a portent of doom but red is either you or a flailing beast bleeding out on the cold ground and I don't wanna tempt fate by assuming it's going to be the flailing beast. Still, I might sound it, but I ain't really superstitious, so you go with whatever you think sounds fancy..."

Jimmy was superstitious, insofar as he knew that having the mind just so made everything else a little easier. But this probably wasn't the time or place to make it known.

Still, the echoes of thunder rolling across the endless plain... that always meant something was coming. He liked that idea, however pretentious it might seem to claim some kind of heritage to legendary warriors. Nah, it wasn't pretentious - like the given names the elders blessed him and his brothers and sisters with, it wasn't something to lay claim to, but something to live up to. He wanted something to live up to.

"I just kind'f think thunder sounds pretty fancy."

Prospero gave Aslak a slight nod of gratitude.

'My vote goes for Thunder Kings also. I feel we should learn our callsigns as well - back at the Institute I was called 'Carcass', for, err, reasons I'll explain later.'

Jaxo calls for attention once again.

"I can see you've settled on Mr. Robinson as your Squad Leader...Thunder Kings. A bit melodramatic, but it works I suppose."

There's a bit of groaning from the older pilots of the other wings-how many young hotshots want to become the Thunderkings reborn, those holo-heroes the Empire uses for propaganda? Kids these days...

Jaxo taps her pad at high speed, dimming the lights in the room, and bringing up a holographic map array. It roughly shows the position of your ship-orbiting in slow patrol around Solartech Station-and the surrounding star system.

The system itself is not much to look at. Officially, it's designated System RG-195. Spacers call this place "Pasha's End" or just "The End". It's about backwater as they come, but it's also an important mineral supplier for the mid-rim...and a buffer against wild space, which stands black and foreboding just beyond sensor range. There are also many luckless Imperial Citizens which still live here-pushed out from the inner worlds by poverty or conflict. It's a reason why the Tripoli is here. These people need to be reminded the Empire will still protect them...there are six habitable planets here, only one as large as Earth-Kingsmount, the system capital. A den of scum of villainy if ever there was one.

Further out-near the border-lies the ominous brilliant orange gas and energy field only known as Praexe Lunarus. The reason Solartech, and by extension, you are here is to study it-or so they tell you.

Jaxo highlights the border area and widens it.

"Begin Briefing-Operation Cold Hearth. Sorry Nuggets, no shakedown flights for you if that's what you were expecting. Here on the border we don't have such indulgences.

Now.

48 hours ago, our friends at the Solartech Outpost were quite alarmed to inform us that they lost contact with 12 perimeter sensor posts-simultaneously. They were sorry they could not inform us sooner. They say no vessels, anomalous energy signatures or phenomena were reported or detected prior to the loss."
Jaxo says curtly.

She pauses to let the information digest, then brings up a small diagram of the sort of listening post you would expect in a place like this.

"This is the F8 Seer Substation. Small and difficult to detect-a 5 man crew, fairly unsophisticated, and no standard weapons or armoring. As per Imperial doctrine, they are designed to emit a broad range of warning signals in case of emergency. For whatever reason, none of them did."

She closes it and turns back to the map. A time lapse shows the system spinning peacefully, and then a massive portion of the map going dark very recently.

(Jimmy notices what perhaps others do not-tapping his own pad and studying the data himself, he notices some telltale signs.

His intuitive  knowledge of scanners tells him that something was 'hazing' the fields prior to their mass shut off, in other words, inundating them with garbage data to clog the lines of communication. It is usually a natural occurrence, especially in high volume ports with poor band receivers. It's also a low tech yet effective way to shut down a listening post for a very short amount of time. Of course, the technical expertise required to block all signals from an Imperial Post would be quite astounding.)

Jaxo undims the lights and turns off the projector.

"Aside from the obvious risk of having ones border blinded, we also know that Solartech was performing some sort of experiments there-they have not divulged to us exactly what. No matter that-such research is valuable to the Empire, and it's ultimate fate a great import to our own mission.

The system itself is no doubt going to be facing trouble as well-by now, everyone knows we are not watching them from this side."

Finally, she turns back to all of you.

"Your mission objective is simple-Two wings have been authorized to investigate the matter, render assistance, or engage hostiles as needed. All 12 listening posts need to be brought online as quickly as possible-assuming of course, that is possible. If not, all research material or personnel thereof must be retrieved or destroyed.

Hostile action should be probing, not definitive-if this action is localized spatial phenomena, the Tarrak or Leeuay or Emperor knows what may also be wandering in the area with blinded sensors or hostile intentions. You will defend yourselves, but the Empire cannot afford an incident...at this time.

Live fire and pursuit is fully authorized on all targets...but you are not, under any circumstances, to violate existing border agreements.

The other two wings will stay on call to defend the Tripoli and RG 195 if needed, or provide emergency mission support-not only from aggressors without, but from forces within that will take advantage of the chaos. Though we don't know how, the information has filtered down and the Farnet is on fire with wild rumors, panic and speculation. We are witnessing large riots in Kingsmount and all other stellar bodies here, though Moff AKlypsis assures us she has it under control. There may also be...disaffected individuals attempting to flee the system and the Empire. Though the local security will hopefully turn them back or detain them, that's another priority of ours today, though a low one.

Speed is paramount-the quicker this is done, the better. People are angry and afraid-and this occurrence is just the excuse needed to rile them up. We need to show everyone the Empire is not slacking."

She pauses one last time, perhaps phrasing her words in her mind.

"...In the absolute worst case-this being a precursor to a full scale invasion, all wings are to pull back to the carrier, abandon the operation and...well, then we'll decide what to do. We can expect no major reinforcements in any case for at least an Earth standard month, though the destroyer I.S.S Battleaxe could assist, at the cost of abandoning her own system, RG-197. Which is currently undergoing mass evacuations due to Voidhound Raids, but I digress.

Any questions? Ramps up in 10 minutes."
She finishes with a sigh.

which wings are being dispatched to investigate?
If hostile forces are detected is the priority capture or kill?
How do you suggest we go about bringing the posts back online?

Scott looked at the five under his command. Can't say I'm particularly enthused to be firing on civilians... After a moment, he raised his hand to indicate he had a question. "Yeah, I got one too ma'am. Are we gonna get any sort of non-lethal armaments? If we're going to be shooting at civilians to stop them from running, I'd prefer to be doing it with EMP bombs or ion cannons rather than the usual weapons."

Jaxo answers rapid fire.

"I suppose no one told you, but Captain Frost believes operational control is best left in the hands of the wings themselves. He has given the orders, and you will accomplish them how you see fit-I suggest your new Wing Leader talk it over with the other Leaders.

Hostiles should generally be eliminated-we do not want an incident, nor witnesses. That said, if a prisoner can be deemed useful for intelligence gathering, he could be captured. Otherwise, we leave that up to your determination.

As for the posts themselves, we have four repair drones to be divided among your wings as you see fit and stored in your personal cargo bays. Together, they can do enough repairs to bring any of the stations back on line from anything short of complete annihilation, given time. Even two or one could do spot repairs and hopefully reestablish communication lines."

She turns to Scott, then. Her look was grim and cold.

"Thunder 1, if a vessel-civilian or otherwise-has gone so far past the red line and ignored calls to dock during an emergency such as this, we must assume they are enemies, or traitors to our Empire. Live fire is permitted, as I said. They must be stopped or destroyed if they cannot be turned back, there is no other choice. At best, you can issue them warnings with all the authority I.S.S has-but the implied threat cannot be left wanting. Non-lethal weaponry is not authorized for this mission.

This is a direct order from Earthhome Command itself...and we obey the Emperor's will."

You sense in the way she phrased it you could choose to merely disable the engines, instead of destroying those potential threats...though what the Empire does to captured dissidents and traitors these days is not really something to ponder on long.

Jimmy waits until the other questions are done with and walks up to Scott.

”Boss… Don’t know whether you care or not to look at the data, but those sensors – they were all blinded before being taken out. It looks like it was all co-ordinated… we should expect it to be pretty hot out there, whether or not ma’am there can tell us anything else or not. I imagine some higher up has noticed.”

Scott nodded to Jimmy. "Good to know. Let the others know to keep an eye out; I'm gonna talk to these other guys." He patted Jimmy's shoulder as he passed him and approached the other squadron leaders. "Might as well get this right out there; my team's going to be one of the two investigating. Now y'all go ahead and discuss which one of your teams is coming with us." He cross his arms and placed his weight on his left foot, almost daring the other squadron leaders to disagree with him.

”Hey… comrades…” said Jimmy, walking over to those of his wingmates left. ”I’ve let the boss know and you should know too – I was looking at the scanner readings and there’s definitely something bad going on to take out all the sensors and block them from radioing out, so keep your eyes open.  Also, shouldn’t we pair up to have a wingman each? Or, you know, wingwoman. Or doesn’t it work like that now?”

Jimmy’s mind was sometimes a little full of the old films about fighter pilot heroes his granddaddy had liked to watch when he was a grubby faced little kid. His pulsed raced a little in anticipation. He’d had a few scrapes before in a ship but this, after all the training, was going to be for real. Us or them, he thought coldly for a second, someone ain’t coming home tonight…

”Let’s make sure it’s them…” he said aloud, without really noticing.

He didn’t want to raise it and make it sound like he doubted anyone, but he thought it strange that the sensor hazing hadn’t been picked up or mentioned by anyone. He wondered what Solartech was doing, and if that was the reason it wasn’t mentioned. The idea that it just wasn’t picked up on seemed worse. Still, he didn’t want to spread anything like dissent when he was still so comparatively raw… He’d just have to look out for himself and for the pilot next to him.

The three, who were amicably conversing, turn in your general direction.

There's two men and one women.

The first one to speak is a man who echoes your own cockiness, though he seems only a bit older than you. He has the look of someone who grew up in a place similar to yours-all bushy brown hair, with rough, sun toughened skin.

"Eager to get that first blood, huh? Good for you, Son. The Empire needs 'em spry and lively." He says dismissively, settling back into his chair.

The other man waves at him impatiently-he's the oldest of the three, passably handsome in his 50's, with a patch of steadily greying hair.

"Don't mind Clem." He says in an educated seeming voice. "He's apt to go head to head with you or anyone at a moments notice, like it or not. My name is Tash, Callsign Lord-I run Green Wing. Clem over here runs Black Wing, and he goes by Scoop..."

The woman speaks last-she is almost as old as Tash and her hair is a greying rich brown, but her own beauty seems tempered by grief. Her blue eyes radiate an immense calm, and a ritual religious symbol of some sort can be seen hanging around her neck.

"...And I am Adi Fulgrave, Callsign Prophet. Blue Wing is my own.

Since you have made your point abundantly clear, I will make mine as well. Blue Wing will accompany you and yours on this mission. Clem is a bit of a hot head, and Tash is far more capable of keeping him in line than I."

Clem meets this with a snort.

Adi doesn't seem to notice it.

"Time is short, so I suggest the following. Your full wing will be accompanied by two of my own, my best pilots. They will keep an eye on you.

I will take my remaining four ships and scout each contact point in turn-you will follow behind, repairing or assisting each station in turn-though depending on the exact circumstance, we may need to improvise. I will avoid engagement if possible, preferring a tactical retreat to your own position-where you will be ready, in case they pursue. This way, we will not all be caught unaware if it turns out to be a trap-better we set one of our own.

If something happens after I have cleared a point, you will have more than enough ships to deal with the threat. In theory.

Also, since I believe our communications are no doubt vulnerable, I suggest we work on a timer system just in case. We will need exact coordination.

I volunteer to be the bait, and you the steel teeth of the trap. Does this sound to your liking? The plan is as much yours as mine."
She finishes, folding her hands and arching her head slightly sideways.

"understood ma'am" Said Auron before turning from Jaxo and speaking to scott "im going to go check up on my fighter and make sure my old buddies havent knocked the weaponry out of alignment, call me on my comms when youve organised our assignment." then with a curt nod to scott and the other wing members Auron heads for the launch bay.

head to launch bay, inspect vessel in great detail, determine ships offensive capabilities as well as cargo capacity, top speed and maneuvering ability

That you do, heading to launch bay four via the grav-tram.

There are in fact, 12 vessels lined up in each of the catapult docks that are used to launch them-less than half of full capacity-there are eight Blackweave Fighter/Bombers, three Thunderchilds and only one Typhoon-which looks pretty banged up at that. The hanger itself seems disused, messy and unorganized-littered with scrap and spare parts. Pools of congealed fluid stain the floor, completing the scene.

You are not quite impressed.

The Blackweave craft is nearly ancient, if dependable and heavily armored. Thunderchilds are the stock fighter of the Empire, and what you grew up hearing Imperial Heroes rode back in the Klendathwui wars. Only the Typhoon is a relatively new design, a quick and dangerous interceptor craft that looks a bit fragile.

One of the Thunderchilds is yours and-surprise, surprise-someone has knocked your guns out of alignment trying to fix them to Imperial Marksmanship Standards.

It takes you a few minutes to fix them right again. You think upon the specs of the vessel as you work..

You nod. The guns are at least clean-Imperial Repeaters, standard issue. They tend to hit whats aimed it, though at extremely close range all bets are off. You don't like to get in knife fighting range with those dogs.

The dull looking missile with the gunmetal grey finish underneath the nose occupies your attention next. While it's tracking is mostly good, the Shredder doesn't do much damage-and is nearly useless against a well shielded craft.

The Engines are also in passing condition, though you make sure to empty out the coolant jugs just to be safe. Thunderchilds have excellent speed, but lose out when forced into tight turns and acrobatics. Something to think about.

And, just when you think you might find the engineer sleeping in the cargo bay, it's empty and clean-enough room for at least a towed escape pod or a single repair drone. Most Imperial designs use the same pick up and storage specifications on all their ships.

Running your hand over the armor-pitted and scarred and repair and blasted all over again for how every many years shes been in service-you are at least thankful this is a tough bird to kill.

Solana tugs on Inara's sleeve. "Let's go look at our ships too. By the way, my callsign is Paprika." The second half is directed towards the rest of her wing.

Go check on the ships. Or my ship, more exactly.
Also, bullypester a mechanic into seeing that everything's nice and squeaky. Also, pester him into cleaning the windows for me D:
