So it seems I accidentally put my canteen in my wheelbarrow and didn't notice... and then I got really thirsty... so right before going to sleep I go to take a swig from my canteen and... end up snorting a line of low-grade meth.

Need at least 3 survival skill, a bone, and some sort of cutting implement

Of course, I'm 1 level short in survival. Guess I'd better chop up some more bodies.

Booted this up after a long time of it just hanging around in my games folder. Pretty standard character gen, taking jittery, asthmatic, and trigger happy (since I rarely use guns anyway) as well as animal empathy and quick reader. just over 10 in most stats, as well as a point in survival and archery. I started off right next to a mansion in an evac shelter, and a quick dive revealed a pretty extensive library. I start reading, get hungry a few hours later and start to look around a bit more to see if I can find some food. Open up the door to my south and what do I find? A bear.

Said bear proceeds to maul me half to death while I frantically try to bash its skull in with my wrench. I manage to kill it but am still bleeding. Cut up my jeans into rags to see if I could use them to stop the bleeding, which I couldn't. Then try to locate the bathroom I had spotted on my way in to see about some painkillers. Found some iodine tablets so I popped one of them to see if they helped at all (they didn't) and some dayquil. Decided to try to head into town (still bleeding) to see if I could raid a pharmacy.

Nope nope nope, bad idea. Swarmed by three or four zombies as soon as I stepped onto the streets proper, I assume attracted by the blood. ate more of the iodine tablets in the event they actually did something while running away, before running into a skeleton and finally meeting my end.

Good god, I didn't even survive one day.

Windows are your best fiend friend. Find a single window inbetween two walls, smash it, get a hammer/nail bat or board/something with good bash and some cut. que. profit.

Yeahhhh, iodine tablets aren't for healing. As in real life, they are for protection from radiation.

IRL reasoning being that certain types of nuclear activities release large quantities of radioactive iodine. This iodine, when inhaled/ingested, will bind to stuff in cells, as normal iodine will, and stick around for a long, long time releasing a bunch of internal radiation, irradiating you from the inside out on a long term basis. Iodine tablets reduce this risk when taken shortly before or after exposure to radioactive iodine begins. It does this by basically megadosing you on iodine, making your body reject any excess iodine as unnecessary, flushing the radioactive stuff out relatively quickly.

Science.
Oh, wait, I mean !!SCIENCE!!.

I'm still having serious troubles with the whole static spawning deal. Even when I feel reasonably prepared, going into town results in floods of acid/shock zombies that just beam the crap out of me until I get cornered by everything else. Always ends in death.

I think these special zombies need a decreased spawn rate. Might start using classic zombie spawn mode.

I try to find houses that are on protrusions from the town proper. It seems that zombies spawn in a radius while houses can appear outside of said radius while still being part of the town so you can sometimes even find five or six houses you can loot without even seeing a zombie.

Alright, tried doing it this way on !!classic spawn mode!! and did OK... managed to kill 40 or so zombies (which i realise isn't the aim of the game, but still) then got ambushed from the side by a fresh zombie; forcing me to abandon my house; resulted in a merry chase around the river bank with a hoarde of maybe a dozen zombies, then having to retreat across a bridge into a forest and get hunted by wolves until nightfall (which all targetted the chest, bloody powergaming wolves)

OK, I thought, as it started to get dark and that night vision perk suddenly became useful, I can still survive my first day! Wrong. During the chase the zombies had managed to shred all my clothing, meaning I got frostbite, I was then ambushed in what I thought was a safe forest by a web spider as I was trying to sleep under a tree, which proceeded to tear me to shreds. RIP me.

Hmm, in the story I have up there, my evac shelter was right next to a megastore, do those give increased spawnrates in the area around them perchance? it would certainly explain why I saw so many zombies as compared to my first game (even if the end result was the same, heh).

Good idea with the looting of houses on the outskirts though, although your not really gonna get at the fabled gun stores, or pharmacies ((which I have seen on the map but yet to actually get to)) by doing it that way.

Overall, liking the game so far even if I haven't played very much nor got very far. From what I have read here, some of you have managed to build deathmachines out of cars, and make houses in the forests... ~envy~

Megastores I think are one of those places that even before static spawns would have zombies in them. I am mostly sure they are packed to the gills with the darn things because of that one zombie game where the protag was trapped in a mall and killed zombies with the random stuff he found in it. As for not finding nice stores, thats true but getting to said store isn't much good if you haven't found a backpack yet and even just one house is worth it if it contains clothes that increase you carry capacity.

Actually, it's a reference to Dawn of the Dead, which was in a mall, but since z-levels aren't in megastores have to do.

Night time, night vision, light step, inconspicuous are yer friends. Also, get a longbow. Best weapon for night raids, can carry tons of the ammo, is silent and is easy as hell to make (heavy stick, 2 3ft strings, 2 archery). Creep around the houses on the outskirts, try and find some containers. ONLY stores you should attempt to raid, in order of priority: military surplus, clothing store, gas station/grocery store, hardware store, library. Everything else can wait till yer stronger. Raid outskirt houses for food/drinks, but the most important things to acquire is bottles, pot/frying pan and water (fill em up at toilets). You'll need a crowbar as well, start with a point in mechanics and you can make one out of a pipe (smash a locker) and a rock (outside). (a)pply it to doors to pry them open quietly. Keep Adderal on you at all times so you can eat it for the speed boost. Avoid shrubs.

Bare minimum you need from the city is a source of water, for which toilets work well. Everything else can be found in the wild with a bit of work. Still easier to raid a library so you can get skills up though.
