So. I am absolutely certain I am freezing to death. How do I prevent that? Wear heavier clothing?

I'm wearing some decently heavy clothing and I'm still getting cold complaints, especially around my mouth, which is frostbitten.

Bare minimum you need from the city is a source of water, for which toilets work well. Everything else can be found in the wild with a bit of work. Still easier to raid a library so you can get skills up though.
Don't even need that. Just find a river.

Yeah, the cold damage got cranked up to 11 in this release. I've got frostbite in 45F weather. Basically you should look for tons of clothing with high warmth, preferably winter gear, and do so ASAP. On another note, I think the cold related stuff needs to be tweaked again. Apparently while wearing a ton of warmth gear (including winter boots and gloves, a hoodie, ect) 'The cold wakes you up;' on a night which was 76F.

Build a fire and sleep next to it. Other than that yeah, cold is weird.

Rivers tend to have swamps, which I hear are really nasty.

So I've been wandering the sewers and mutating randomly. I can't seem to find the ant queen in this anthill though.

I have been putting 2 into tailoring because with 4 skill you can make a few good items. One nice item is Long Underwear which gives 30 warmth and has -1 encumbrance, that and you can make backpacks. Also glove liners, fingerless gloves, and wool socks off the top of my head can all be warn with no encumbrance but provide warmth. Basically just check the various clothing items you find and put on the ones that won't encumber you.
Also it may be a bug so I figured I would mention it but you know how backpacks are limited to 2 worn at a time? Well you can along with those 2 backpacks wear military rucksacks which I assumed where also backpack type things.

So it seems I accidentally put my canteen in my wheelbarrow and didn't notice... and then I got really thirsty... so right before going to sleep I go to take a swig from my canteen and... end up snorting a line of low-grade meth.

Swamps are nasty, but are only along a small portion of most rivers. Around 80% of any given river should be safe.

And yeah, tailoring early on is really nice. Hoodies provide a decent amount of storage and warmth without encumbrance. Sheets everywhere from house curtains provide ample scraps, with thread being the only real limiting factor.

You can wear 2 of any container. Ive had points where I'd be wearing 2 backpacks, 2 military rucksacks, 2 purses, 2 utility vests, 2 belt rigs, 2 fanny packs and 2 messenger bags after raiding a ton of mil supply and clothing stores.

Granted, a few containers over a trenchcoat and maybe a kevlar vest is huge huge penalty so eh.

Assuming that military rucksacks are the 200-pound capacity frame-mounted backpacks that are used for major gear transportation, I sincerely doubt anyone could physically wear two of those.

Wear them? Yes. Carry a full load in both? No.

Also, sewers/subways are dangerous. They spawn enemies even with static spawns enabled; I was running down a cleared tunnel and found CHUDs where there had been nothing before. And when I popped up in a subway station surrounded by zombies, coming back down into the subway spawned many zombies just offscreen.

Little note for people having problems with static spawns, with it on, sound is a much smaller issue, you can happily be blasting away with a shotgun with no worries about 50 more zombies turning up from nowhere.  Poke around outside towns till you find a gun or 2 and some ammo, then go into town making a bline for gun stores.  If you have a vehicle then just drive right to the store, get out and start shooting till everything is dead.
(I play static with ranged chars, high PER.  Melee just takes too long)

I'm a lucky dog. Spawned outside of a town, close enough for a short walk. What do I find? This town is half empty! I was free to pillage all the way in to about 1/3 towards the center before even seeing a proper zombie. By that time I had fifty arrows, so I pincushioned him and a few buddies, and began my crusade. It's going great. I don't know if  I went through this town with a previous character or what, but there seems to be a lack of bodies everywhere for that.

I think small towns have less zombies, towns consisting mostly of houses seem to have less zombies, and generally areas with houses instead of shops have less zombies. At least that's the impression I've been getting.

So I go into this cave at the outskirts of a town during a nighttime raid, flashlight on, discover a screenfull of sewer rats, in fact more than I've ever seen. I freak out and run back into town with a river of bloodthirsty rats behind me. Said chase lasts a good while, I think I'm faster than said rats. Finally I manage to get away by running straight up into the forest back towards my starting shelter near said town. Finally I can have some peace and quiet, I thought. Getting ready to spend the night and lick my wounds in the shelter basement. Upon entering said basement the horde of rats I, quite certainly, left way back in town starts spawning on the staircase until the basement is full. I am quickly pushed into a corner. Death takes a surprisingly long time as I manage to carve up about a hundred rats with my knife, the battle lasts hours, the wounds are many. After a while the character is like, 'ok guys I'm done, take me!', I imagine him snorting every last bit of cocaine he had, rats attached to every part of his body, and then promptly assuming the fetal position and going to his happy place. Hopefully giving up the ghost amidst a cocaine fueled sexrock hallucination.

Bug or does a horde of bloodthirsty rats track me from the town, through the forest and into the shelter basement ? I'm not even sure there were enough turns for them to find me the fair way.

Do not enter the sewers without molotov cocktails. Now you know why.

Only this was a cave, or do caves near town go straight into the sewers ? (I've played the most before caves went in)

It's a cave special, The Rat King was chilling in there too.
Warping to the Evac Shelter was probably a bug tho.
