Deon was well on his way for a texture pack for the original game. No idea if it is compatible / ever released though.

I keep popping on the thread to see if anyone has made a graphical tileset for the game...

I keep being disappointed. :(

Desperate to play, but I don't do ASCII (I'm not even a graphics whore, I just can't do ASCII!).

You CAN do ASCII. Just try. You're never gonna be able to do it if you don't try, ffs.

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

Last I heard there was somebody kinda working on putting together a tileset.  But I would not get your hopes up dude.  I also have a very hard time playing some roguelikes in ascii (Nethack, Hengband...) even though I play DF and Cataclysm in ASCII.  But sometimes a tileset just is not available.
EDIT: Relevant: http://www.cataclysm.glyphgryph.com/smf/index.php?topic=202.0

In that case if you want to play the game you have to deal with the ascii.  When I first started playing DF there were no tilesets available (at least none I know of) and I managed to learn to play DF that way.  Nowadays I prefer it, and can't make out any of these tiny low detail tilesets instead.
And while I hate to put down Dwarf Fortress in any way, I would have to say that Cataclysm may be the easier game to learn ascii with.  There are fewer overlapping symbols to trip people up.

Make liberal use of the look key for the first few sessions.  'x' at everything, don't try to hard to memorize, because after awhile you will anyway. You'll find yourself using the 'x' key less and less.

Turns out carving up sticks uses up a combat knife. An annoying bug.

Hanging out in a fallout shelter, killing squirrels with my crossbow, drinking water from a swamp, killing spiders. I'm living the post-apocalyptic dream.

I usually use marijuana.

The swamp is a serious problem cos it keeps giving me food poisoning and I don't have any rivers nearby. There's a town nearby but it might not be worth the risk of a thousand zombies since I'm only a few days in. What do.

The ASCII is actually not that bad in this game. I too would love to see a tileset somewhere in the future but a lot of the things you see make sense. The game also tells you if there's baddies around (that you can see) and what kind, which works surprisingly well.

I tend to think the same thing every time I download a new version but forget about it a few minutes into the game. Give it a try, once you manage to memorize the controls you might've forgotten about the graphics already.

Well, you can go into town at night and look for a water purifier, they are damn handy, if you can find some scientist corpses and a lab pass, they have piles of water.  Mansions also often have pools.

Winners on the other hand, grab a shovel, fortify a house on the edge of town and take on all comers.  Large amounts of pits solve all problems.

Well, that's the closest a dev ever came to speaking to me. I have spoken to a coder, though. *ticks off bucket list*

... What? I have low aspirations.

Whatever happened to fursuits? It was interesting considering the idea that 70% of New England's population were furries. It was almost as odd as the idea that every computer in New England runs on Dosbox and only has the ability to store software or text files at most.

That was about 3 rewrites ago. I may re-add them when I get around to adding more shit in general to houses.

On that topic, making computers more intresting would be nice. Especially if you could carry them around and just edit .txt files with them. Easy in-game inventory keeping.

Definitely need that. But writing in books would also be good.
