Technically, The Lord of the Rings is one book that's usually broken up.
Well, mine is also one book. But it is divided into six 'books' so I'm counting it as six :P

The Poetic Edda was pretty amazing, and I really respect the translator for my version (Hollander).  He does a really good job of not just getting across the tone and structure of the originals, but also the quality of the various poems.  Really fantastic, look forward to reading again sometime.

Next up: Auden's translations of Norse poetry and the last 150 pages of Hard Times.

EDIT: Yeah, I seem to be mainlining the Harry Potter fanfic at the moment.  I've got only 12 more chapters of the other long work I was reading left... go figure.  But after this, I'll read something more serious!  I'm finally getting enough sleep to really make good use of my long hours on the train.

Woe is me to have so many novels half-completed.

Since I'm away from home for the moment, I've had to set down the Wheel of Time series; instead I've picked up the Toaru Majutsu no Index light novel series for the moment. It's a little shorter then what I normally read, but I figure that since the Wheel of Time books are about double the average book length it makes up for it. :P

Book 27: Machine of Death - Various Authors (Edited by Ryan North, Matthew Bennardo, David Malki)

This book is excellent. A great collection of stories all centered on a unique and interesting premise. Highly recommended. I'm considering getting the sequel.

LOTR may not take me as long as I tought. If I'm lucky, I'll have finished book 2 by the end of the week. The rest will probably be slower.

Three more light novels go down today, widening my nice lead on the ticking wave of progress. Now that I've managed to get my hands on the next few books in the Wheel of Time series, though, it will probably take a little longer before I post again (though it is summer break, so who knows? :P).

Right.  I'm done with the Harry Potter fanfiction for a while, having finished some 9 books in the past week and satisfied my greasy romantic urges.

I solemnly swear that tomorrow I'll clock off on Hard Times and The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, alongside starting with the Auden and Doctorow, at least the first 20 pages each.

EDIT: FUCK MY LIFE, LET'S READ SOME MORE HARRY POTTER

At least my coteacher admitted that Hard Times is notoriously fuckish Dickens, and I have only about 100 pages left.  I want to strangle this guy and his anti-math tirades.  Shithead.  Gonna play a little Mass Effect and then I'll try it out again.

You guys read a lot, are we allowed to ask for recommendations here? I've never been good at finding authors.

I'm after something occult, bit of mystery, not full blown fantasy setting, just something dark and personal. Anything come to mind?

Neil Gaiman stuff might be good, if it's not too "fantasy" for you. American Gods or Neverwhere both take place in the real world, just with an extra sort of layer of reality over it.

Some Chuck Palahniuk books might be good. Diary or Lullaby maybe.

Desden Files.
This one right here. Jim Butcher does a wonderful job of catching a hint of noir, a hint of fantasy, and quite a bit of humor in his books.

If you want classical novels, critical theory, or disturbing amounts of fanfiction, I'm your person.  Otherwise I don't think I'll be that useful.  Genre fiction is not my specialty.

On the other hand, I think that you could enjoy The Story of the Stone.  It doesn't fit well into Western novel genres, but there is definitely occult with a bit of mystery, hugely personal and pretty frickin' dark.  It's a hard read but it's positively brilliant.

I also recommend Gaiman's Anansi Boys.  It's the most smoothly-plotted Gaiman I've seen so far (without the infuriating tendency to die 3/4 through the plot or be overblown with unforseeable coincidences of birth, like most of his novels with which I'm familiar) and though it is light, there's something of great value there.

Book 28: Lullaby - Chuck Palahniuk

This one was another re-read. I wanted a quick, light, easy one that I could bang through in a couple of days. I definitely consider it one of his better works, and with minimal scenes of gut-wrenching gore (just one, I think, which is far less than the other books have). There's a lot of good social commentary in this one, and some interesting ideas.

Book 28: Equal Rites - Terry Pratchett

Not much to say. It's a Discworld novel, which are always good. First time reading this one. I don't think it will be one of my favorites, but it was still enjoyable to read.
