You forgot my new character ebbor. I'll post it here so you can see it better.

Name: David Chapel
Role: Head of Security

We need money for repairs, badly. I say that we either sell all our scrap for money to help repair the generators and stuff, or use it for repairs or making railgun ammo. It's taking up too much space sitting in our hold and we could be using it better right now. Also, maybe we should check out what all the authority ships are going and if they get in a fight, sit it out and scavenge some stuff from wrecked ships.

Why is Cargo Bay C orange at 40/40 and full despite us having only 518/800 cargo? Also, can you please mark both per-unit and per-stack volumes of our cargo? Also can you please put reactor's parameters like this:
Quote
       3/8:Online;Integrity:40/40;
       5/8:Offline;Integrity:~8/40;
Code: [Select]
3/8:Online;Integrity:40/40;
       5/8:Offline;Integrity:~8/40;
Would be much more readable. Kthx.

So, time to prepare for the escort... (I think it's a good job, not for credits but for chance to salvage remains of pirates\improve our standings with merchants)

1) Reactors. If I remember correctly we could fix one by salvaging parts from 4 others... I don't like going in combat with 3 reactors online... Maybe we should, sell remaining reactors as scrap and hope to buy some new, more modern reactors later? At least we should learn how much damaged reactors cost

2) Also we should use our scrap to make some rail gun ammunition for our main guns. No ammo isn't fun.

3) Diana will try to get 25% (125 credits) in advance. Motivate it that this money will be spent to improve cruisers combat capabilities, thus increasing escort their own safety if we all agree to the escort job

4) We should try to upgrade our boat by adding those small thruster and fighter sized rail guns to it. Just remember that we are hiding this parts from authorities

5) No, no, no we aren't selling scrap metal. It's a bad idea to sell something stolen to the former owners. They may understand where we got it. Besides it's a useful resource for makeshift repairs\ammo production\whatever else that needs metal

GM, are we fast enough to keep pace with the merchant without main engines working?

The stats note the availble capacity. Ie, if they are damaged there's a lower capacity of goods you can store safely.

Also you can easily follow the merchant, although it can outpace you on the long run. Your engines can arcelerate faster, but his are more fuel efficient and have a higher specific impulse.

Uh. I get a feeling I've vastly underestimated the complexity of the moving system. Care to elaborate?

That was fluff. It has practically no ingame effect. The point is that on short distances you will catch on to the ship, but on very long distances it will outrun you.

Max looks at the trip data on the ship's computer, having memorised the route. 'So then. When are we leaving?'
Question: what is more powerful, the lasers of the railguns with scrap ammunition?

EDIT:
I agree with salvaging another reactor from the others. We could also add the fighter railguns and extra thrusters onto the Red Rocket as a makeshift, if we get money in advance. It's better than nothing.

Depends on what you judge them on. Power use, accuracy or damage per time unit. For now, the lasers will be better, as the railguns get a negative penalty from the fighter sized scrap based ammo.

Also, feel free to improvise and such. You got about half a day to mess with stuff.

Of course, we don't need to be as fast as the merchant, we're his protection.
Let's get ready to set off on our first adventure!

Firing a lot of small railgun ammo = Railshotgun.

Hurrah, we have something to hit fighter sized crafts.

we potentially need much, much more railgun ammo.

You guys think I should whip up some ammo for our big guns?

Shia starts hacking up scrap for ammunition.

Remember that railguns can shoot any metal, Even anything covered by metal, so we may be very creative with designs. In fact I'd prefer to load different railguns with different ammo.

My proposals

a) Shrapnel. We already have this. It's likely will damage gun more then other ammunition, but may be useful to shot down  fighters\enemy missiles

b) Containers from light metals, that can be filled with anything we want. It's fun to shoot barrels full of our crap.. literally if we want

c) Long, thin arrow-like ammo

d) Choose most dense materials, compress them in a cubes\balls up to max caliber of our guns

Advanched tools should allow us to make complex ammunition

Back in the firestar game we wanted to get a padded metal chamber, like an escape pod, and use it to launch marines directly into ships. When we decided that it would break their bones we decided to send an AI with robobody. All we need to do is line the inside with magnet negating stuff and keep the outside ferrous and vwalla.

The escort job is accepted unanimously. However, despite much effort Diana fails to get the merchants to pay in advance. After all, it's but a routine trip, with little chance for actual danger. Nevertheless, the crew thinks it wise to make the Salvation combat ready. Parts from the broken reactors are salvaged, and are used in bringing yet another reactor online.
One of your number goes to the engineers, and inquires what the broken reactors would be worth. The engineer answers that he'd be willing to offer 200 a piece.  You also ask what a new reactor would cost. The answer is simple: 2000 credits, installation costs not included.

Meanwhile on the Salvation, multiple designs for railgun are produced. A large quantity of fighter sized ammunition is fabricated, both for use in the main railguns as for use as the fighter sized ones. Some containers are made, though it is not clear how well these will hold up when launched. Several pipes and struts are sharpened and shaped in long spikes, creating  compact but dangerous ammunition. Finally, the densest materials are gathered and welded together, creating several High density slugs for use in the main guns.  About half the scrap metal avaible is used in the production. Now all that remains is chosing which shells to load in the guns, and testing them out.

Some minor attempts are made at upgrading the Red Rocket. While adding the thrusters won't be possible without cutting to the hull to connect the fuel lines, which would seriously weaken the construction, adding the railguns proves trivial. They are however unarmored, fixed forward facing and can't be reloaded midflight, but it'll have to do. Extensive manoevres, like athmospherical flight, will easily tear them off.

With all preparations finished, you take some rest, before setting of in the morning. The first part of the Journey proves uneventfull, and boring. The jump beacon is relatively close to the station and no pirates are seen.  As you wait for the Jumpdrives to charge, you're happy to know that these beacons are found over the entire traject. While the name might be misleading, because the Jumpdrive navigates solely on gravitic influences in the space time continuum, they are vital for fast interstellar travel. Calculating jump trajectories is  an extremely complicated and long endavour , and a small error might result in a unfortunate collision with the local sun. The jump beacons, which always remain in the same place around the main body of gravity in their system, prove a helpfull aid. Their powerfull computers can rapidly adapt the precalculated jumptrajectories to whichever ships passes  by, and their heavy armour and complete automation keeps costs low.

The first jump is a short one, and only takes you to the Outer system, about a light year away from Galven. The next jump should take you to about 1 lightyear away from Merope, with the jump after that getting you in the system proper. The system is earily quiet, and you're about halfway through before you get the first signs that someone else except you and the merchant might be here. A simple, unsecured, but also uninformative docking signal. Unfortunately, it's quite far away, and investigating it would mean making a rather large detour.

David scratched his chin in thought.

"Might be a trick or a trader. Regardless, we can't stop right now, we're on the job. We should jump now, before we get any unwanted attention."

Take down the location of the signal then jump.
