I'm still wondering if this fort has access to guns or not.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

From the Journals of 'Sir', 27th Granite, 103
So my wife threw a bit of a tantrum. No harm done really, nobody was hurt, and she calmed down swiftly. Regardless, it may be a sign of things to come... currently most of the guys are OK, only three of our total ninety show signs of depression, and even they can be saved still.
The zombie situation has changed a bit. Not better, just more entertaining. Most of the corpses outside came back to life, but now they found three ogres to harass instead of us. At least we have something funny to look at from the top of the walls.

From the Journals of 'Sir', 3rd Slate, 103
Migrants have been spotted. I've ordered the militia to be assembled on the surface. If we can gather our troops swiftly enough, there's a chance that our soldiers can cover the fuckers long enough to reach the safety of the fort. It's risky, but I can't just leave them there, at the mercy of the zombies.

10th Slate, 103
-Are you fucking serious?
-Sir, I assure you, as liaison from the mountainhomes, I am absolutely serious.
-My boys are fighting a bloody war up there!
-And you are down here, still stuck in a bed. So there's nothing else for you to do really.
-Have I told you to go fuck yourself already?
-You have. Now, would you look at these papers please?
-Fine. We need wood, steel and if possible, mithril. We can handle our food situation, thank you very much.
-What about constructs?
-What about them?
-Would you buy turrets or landmines?
-I don't really like the idea of placing mines around my fortress. It's a bit fishy in my books. But yeah, a few bullet turrets would be nice.
-And fire turrets?
-That may come in handy against all these undead, so yes. Sign me up for those, too. Will that be all?
-Not quite. I'll be back later.
-I hope you die horribly.

(Next up: Injuries! More zombie-slaying! Btw, guns are an option in the future, but as we still don't have steel...)

If only I could get a second dwarf, one not so death-ready as the original Empfan   :'(

From the Journals of 'Sir', 14th Felsite, 103
That was fuckin awesome. Our military is brutally effective, even though some our soldiers have... strange ideas about combat tactics. Like Wypie here:

I have to admit, it works and all, but still, what the fuck? Also, who brought in that mithril javelin thrower? I didn't know we had that. I think that's going to be melted down, if I ever get my hands on it. The escort was successful, all of the migrants made it in alive, and another batch of zombies were killed. Unfortunately, we've lost a novice wrestler in the process (and a few pet turtles, but I couldn't give less of a fuck), and quite a few of our capable soldiers are injured. This includes the captain of the guard, my wife, and somehow, Freya and Silus. Turns out even they are not completely invincible - the ogres had a few lucky shots before they hacked the creatures to a bloody mess. Even Meph has somehow managed to take a beating, I suppose that happened when she dragged an injured soldier back to the fort. Oh well, all in all, a pretty lucrative operation. At least now I have some decent company, here at the hospital.

Also, the outside looks pretty grim.

When we FINALLY get this undead problem sorted out, we're gonna have a nice supply of bones... Also, I'm a little worried about undead ogres. Maybe Mephs' stupid idea is not completely stupid?

6th Hematite, 103
-Sir!
-What is it, sport?
-Important news, Sir... it's dolomite. We've found a huge supply of dolomite while digging out the new bedrooms.
-So?
-Sir... dolomite is flux material.
-That's nice and all, but how much iron do we have again?
-Seven bars, Sir.
-See. Doesn't matter if we have a shit-ton of flux if we still don't have iron. Good news by the way, thank you. Dismissed.

From the Journals of 'Sir', 16th Hematite, 103
We're running out of barrels, and don't have any wood to make more. There are only a few dark strangler bodies and bodyparts out there, but most of our capable militia is in here with me, at the hospital. If only one of us was with them, I would be sure our boys could take on what's left of the bastards, but this way... it's risky.

From the Journals of 'Sir', 20th Hematite, 103

You know what? Fuck that guy.

(Noted, you'll get your new dwarf soonish. I have a few fairly important things to take care of before that.)

I'd like a dwarf, Axedwarf male, and weapon/armorsmith. Making weapons and armor in his off time when he's not training or hacking undead apart

Hmm, name this one Weiss, the ones with that name tend to live longer for some reason, and enjoy snapping thieves necks with their bare hands.  If possible, make him a pikedwarf

Edit: I just realized something, fountains of blood...corpses everywhere...this fortress SCREAMS shadow temple.

20th Hematite, 103, five seconds later:

-God, I forgot there's two of you.
-Good evening, Mirroredskunks.
-Fuck you. And it's 'Sir' to you, if you don't want your jaw to hurt very-very badly very-very soon.
-Fine then, I'll play along, Sir. Forgive my partner for leaving, he is a little bit impatient...
-What the shit? He was here for three years, haven't said a word until the very end, and you call that impatient?
-Sir, I'm talking about the undead situation.
-Oh.
-You have to admit, it's taking you quite a while to solve it.
-Well, the previous expeditions were very quick to solve it. By dying. I think I'm doing a mighty fine job compared to that.
-True and true. So, what was it you requested again?
-Oh gods. Steel, wood, bullet and fire turrets. Mithril, if you have some. That stuff is amazing.
-Will that be all?
-Yes, but I suppose you won't be giving it away for free.
-But of course.

Suddenly, a dwarf bursts into the room, without knocking, without salutation, anything.
-What the fuck, Wypie? This is a serious meeting, you are not following military disciple, you are improperly dressed, you are soaking in blood and HOLY SHIT YOU ARE SOAKING IN BLOOD!
-It's not mine, Sir!
-Then whose is it? It smells really bad.
-It's dark strangler blood, Sir.
-Could it be...?
-Yes, Sir. We've destoryed the last one of them.
-That's... that's awesome, Wypie. I mean holy fuck that's good. Take the rest of the day off, all of you. Dismissed.

-Now, what do you have to say about that?
-Nothing, really. Job well done.
-Again, fuck you. You liaisons think it's so easy, running a fort like this. If it was my decision, I'd have you oversee an expedition like this, before landing you in a cushy job like yours.
-Fortunately, that's not for you to decide. Now, about our trading agreement. I have this for you:

-Hm... spears and fish, those I think we can manage. Maybe spear throwers, tools and gems, too, but not in big quantities. The rest are no-go. Is that enough to get you out of my sight finally?
-More than enough, Sir. Thank you for your time.

From the Journals of 'Sir', 26th Hematite, 103
The secret project that Empfan and Meph started has finally been completed!

1 - Captured prisoners of war, wild animals and undead. The latter produce a rather rather unhealthy miasma. Nothing to do about that for now.
2 - Animal training here.
3 - These quarters were intended for Empfan. We need someone to fill in for him soon...
4 - The Great Arena! Here, soldiers could test their might against any captured foe, without endangering civilian lives. The northern lever opens the cage where the prisoners are loaded, the southern one seals the grate to the arena itself.

Not for the project, but also new:
5 - Hammerers' office and quarters.
6 - Cell blocks for dwarven justice.

We had a grand opening battle, set between the fortress guard and a captured zombie dwarf. It didn't go quite as planned. Oh sure, the zombie went down alright, it's just that we've lost another recruit. Plenty of others to choose from, though.

(Next time: Surprise guest, and dwarfings!)

There are no such dwarves here. Basically, everyone I've checked has a number of kids, or at least a lover/wife. I'll post a partial list tomorrow.
Also tomorrow: the world is literally ON FIRE.

The current captain of the guard fits your description (male axedwarf with 16 kills), BUT he's currently in the hospital with most of the militia. Nothing serious, just needs a crutch. Oh and he's the husband of Silus apparently.
I can't promise you anything on the gun department though. The only thing I found was a really small cluster of iron, and that went immediately into weapon and armor production, so steel (and therefore gun production) is still uncertain.

Edit: You're half-lucky, I've got a meteoric pistol from a trader. No ammo, and no plans for the mint for now, but still: gun.

Well, when Weiss does get in, just set him up for animal training as well I guess, that room is going to be mine...

Also if my shadow temple idea settles with you (or whatever meph named it), I will GLADLY be the head of the dark order military squad...
