Personally, I like the fact that it uses multiple bars.  It's much more realistic.  And even then, with a sword needing the same amount of metal as a spear, it isn't as accurate as it could be.

Well, yes.  If you don't like something, you either change it or stop participating.  This is how it's meant to be and Toady won't be changing it back (I assume at least, I don't claim to know his plans).  You either get used to it, you change it yourself, or you stop.

If this were a new feature with questionable traits, I'd agree with you.  I personally don't like all the new animal-people that have been introduced, it detracts from regular creatures and makes the world seem far more "weird" since wolves are now rare.  This is a valid concern, since it's a new introduction that hasn't been tested.  Your concern is with a piece of core game mechanics that was meant to be in place since the game was created.  While you're certainly still entitled to your opinions, it's not placed in an area that will be altered in vanilla.

Again, this may sound asshole-ish but that's just how I sound sometimes.  It's like complaining that dwarves get hungry, or that skills take time to rank up.  What you're complaining about is something very basic to gameplay and vital to the challenge that DF seeks to embody.

The thing is: every aspect of DF can be modded with enough effort. And the effort to mod a RAW file is ridiculously simple (i.e.: add [WORDS] and/or remove []).

Just add [PERMITTEDREACTION:FREE_ADAMANTINE_STRANDS] with the proper reaction on "reaction_smelter.txt" denoting you want to smelt wafers out of oxigen and you're golden.

Or go like me and try to learn how to play the game without those quirks. I'm currently with no cheats playing 7 hermit-type village. It's awesome!

It's treated as completely normal because this is Dwarf Fortress.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with a wall of flames, only to later realize that you're surrounded by a wall of flames.
There's nothing that can't be solved by hurling fifteen roc birds at it.

quit talking to me like i'm a child, first of all. i'm pretty sure i understand how game development works. if you took the time to perhaps read the OP, you'd see I'm nostalgic for an overpowered adamantine clad army. am i demanding it be changed? am i beseeching toady to change it NOW? no, i'm not. i'm wistfully remembering a day gone by. am i even switching the raws? nope, because i'll play the game.

but you, seeing that you could score some cool points, came into the topic, trying to insinuate i couldn't handle the issue, and then continuing on that i couldn't handle the fact that dwarves get hungry. i get it, you wanted to be tough and awesome and immediately framed the debate as me, being a little elfy (hur hur hur) girl who couldn't handle basic game mechanics, nor understand the basic process of editing raws, and you, big tough guy who's awesome at df.

oh yeah, that may sound asshole-ish, but that's just how i sound.

"makes me rage" does not sound like "wistfully nostalgic" to me.

Pretty much this.  And anyone who opposes your view, you attack them.  Everything you say seems to dig you into a deeper hole where you try to defend a viewpoint that you can't even make up your mind on.

But I'm done with this thread.  Enjoy your rage, imma go have fun.

If it really needs to be pointed out to you what up until this point you have said that is childish then it's a futile effort because you've already proven that you can't wrap your head around it.

I'm not going to waste my breath.

I got a chuckle out of this.

I think everyone's getting wound a little too tight.  To compensate, here is a picture of George Bush eating a cat:

To move things back on topic, DF is a game of adaptability.  When circumstances change, your strategy changes.  It's a sandbox that tries to kill you.  That's what makes it so Fun!

Smaller embarks mean fewer pillars. I typically see 2-3 pillars in a 4x4 embark. Also note that fiddling with layer depths can change the amount of space for pillars (and increasing the lower layer depths can also make more z-levels of adamantite).

My pre VD 1x1 embark has more candy than i can use (well y'know what i mean - can always have more Candy..) I have two squads replete with Candy everything and silks clothes, i was concidering making a Candy Road - i think the fix is worhtwhile and increases the value of metals.
Also in my pre VD fort, i have hundreds of bars of copper and many dozens of iron , all form goblinite.
So fix is good IMO.
