Have none of you heard of cage traps and drowning rooms? I didn't even use a military in my first year of playing this game (mind you that was when wrestlers were ridiculously powerful)

A trap is only worthy of being called 'dwarfy' if it is needlessly complicated and almost guaranteed to fail and flood your entire fort with magma and/or loose forgotten beasts.

And even if you dislike cage traps, a weapon trap with 10 wood spikes can easily defeat less-armoured foes. I mostly use them as dodge-me traps, with some more spikes at the bottom of the pit.

Or use war animals. Especially now that you can actually use exotics.

Incidentally, it's the WAFERS tag that adamantine has that makes it take up to 3x as much candy as it does other metals to make anything. It takes 1 bar per 3 MATERIAL_SIZE or portion thereof an item has, but 1 wafer per 1 MATERIAL_SIZE. This is the way it worked back in 40d and before and, as has been mentioned, is how it's supposed to be. If you added another metal that had the WAFERS tag, it, too, would take 9 units to make a breastplate.

I didn't even have any idea it was changed back, up until this point. Not that I have to worry too much, considering my newest world is currently in the Golden Age, with all traces of goblins(along with nearly every megabeastie) wiped from existence.

There is always something that comes along and changes the way DF is played.

Adapt, Improvise & Overcome.

I view this more as "There goes that bug you all liked" kind of thing. Then again, my fortresses don't usually last long enough to get the cotton candy. Yes, yes I know terrible on me, but if I find good, usable metals up top, I don't feel like I have to dig straight down to magma.

Not to mention I don't even want to try and use pump stacks to bring magma to the surface still. They scare me.

Magma pumps are your friends. They just want to getin into your fortress to make sure that your dwarves are all toasty and warm. You cannot fault them for good intentions.

Indeed.  One day will come when building destroyers can destroy hatches from below, and I swear when that day comes, I will not complain.  Also, pshaw fortress defense.  If you have rock for mechanisms you should be able to come up with something to thwart any siege [and more dwarfy than masses of traps too].  If you have wood and water too?  hell, you're in good shape.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

If you have a skilled bowyer and bonecrafter/woodcrafter, and dozens of hunter/ranger migrants like I keep getting, you are golden.  They will take down FBs without blinking.

Also, when I started playing, candy was not guaranteed to be on the map.  Nor was magma at any level, or any kind of cavern/water...  *obligatory "git off mah lawn!" cane-waving*  ;]

Myself, this is going to technically be "learning something new", since I started with 0.31.11.  However, I like the change.

So, does this mean more folks are going to join me in the bone-and-wooden-bolts-for-combat-ammo group? :D

Very true. Although, I have little experience with traps myself... probably because of all the stories I hear of cage traps, trapping entire siege armies. That just didn't seem as !!fun!! as the siegers slaughtering my milita as they tried to buy time for the bridge to get drawn up. This, being DF, means everyone decides to pull the lever to seal us in after several goblins get inside, because there's always something more important to do!

Oh hell, Toady's here.  Someone offer him a Candy Cane or something before he smites us all!

Back to the Topic:  My brother introduced me to DF during 40d, when as melomel mentioned much of the things you're practically guaranteed now (access to lava, adamantine, ANY underground features and their native life-forms, the highly complex but overall better-functioning military system, I could go on and on and on...) were either nonexistant or a matter of luck.  My brother (who played 40d more than I did) had quite a few forts during that version and only got a couple with magma, and only ONE with both magma and HFS (he's strictly against modding, cheating, and editing anything in any game whatsoever).

TL,DR: Yes, now that Toady's fixed the material use bug back to where it was before 31.25 you're not going to easily make a squad of shiny blue-clad killing machines.  As posted earlier there are STILL ways to beat the system and get infinite candy as before.  You will do just fine if you just Dwarf the Fuck UP as Girlinhat so kindly suggested.

Now go kill a thousand goblins and drop their bodies down a shaft straight to the Magma Sea (or Clown Car) from the surface as a sacrifice to Armok's bloody glory.
