9 wafers for one candy breastplate? basically means the days of having at least one squad of candy equipped dwarves is over.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but thats the way it was supposed to be. The material re-write that took place between 40d and .31 broke the quantites required for forging. .34 has returned them to how they always have been. .31 was simply far too easy as a result -steel and bluemetal gear was far too abundant. Now, with the quantites of high material quality gear restricted, you simply cant just spam weapons and armour quite as easily. IMHO, a good thing.

It's much more challenging now.  2 squads worth of steel-clad swordsdwarves is a major undertaking.  Bluemetal you can forget about except for a hero or two.

Better, IMO.

In a fat-fingered moment while setting up another military squad I accidentally created a captain of the guard rather than a militia captain.  His squad of near-legendary hammerdwarves equipped with high quality silver hammers then took it upon themselves to dispense justice to all the mandate breakers in the fortress.  It was quite messy.

MUCH better.  Scarcity breeds ingenuity.  But for me, there's no scarcity of GIGANTIC WAR ELEPHANTS.

How do you keep them fed? Modified the [GRAZER] tag so they eat like sheep?

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

Yes.  Which, admittedly, gets out of hand quickly.  I have more war elephants now than I do war dogs.  Maybe I should tweak their birth rates or something.

I like it.  Having scarcer materials means you're forced to use it more wisely.  It adds a nice element of forethought in the game strategy.

If you don't like it, forge ady bolts and then melt them down.

OK, I have to reload the save.
There was a bit of a problem regarding flashfreezing, a ballistae, and a barrel of dwarven ale. Gonna fix it up.

Real world elephants have a 24 month pregnancy. (Yes. 2 whole years.) The childhood of an elephant calf is over a decade as well. This makes their reproductive rate rather slow.

Perhaps you could implement those realities into the raws?

Maybe the number of bars is controlled by MATERIAL_SIZE in the raws?  That is 9 for breastplates, perhaps by co-incidence.  If not, then setting that to 1 should make breastplates cheap again.

Of course, if you're going to do that, you might as well just change the adamantite smelt reaction to produce 10x the normal number of wafers or something. Or just make a free-adamantite reaction.

Like half of my forts don't even have access to candy. It's just not even there to be found. The times that I have seen it it's usually just a single super tiny spot. I'd be lucky to even have a single dwarf fully equipped in it, or even half equipped. Any idea what the cause of this lack of candy is? I usually use 3x3 embarks with advanced worldgen, so it's probably something I changed without even knowing. Having it using a bunch of the material to make something is fine - as long as you have even have some access to it.

No access kind of defeats the point of making it use more per.

Edit: I'll try regenning the world with a couple more layers at the bottom and see how it goes. Thanks. :)
Turns out I had forgot the save the layer changes I had made before so there was only 2 layers at the bottom on that world. No wonder I couldn't find any. <.<

Smaller embarks mean fewer pillars. I typically see 2-3 pillars in a 4x4 embark. Also note that fiddling with layer depths can change the amount of space for pillars (and increasing the lower layer depths can also make more z-levels of adamantite).
